645Z sensor: DxOMark strikes again ...

It is strange. I remember earlier in the comments section of that DXO review there are at least three complaints regarding the unpublished 645Z review. Now it is gone?! Could someone else confirm this? I hope I'm not imagining things.

No Image Stabilisation, is it critical?

I'm looking at large sensor compacts to replace both my old dslr and phone camera when I want to travel light. The Fuji X70 looks good (my wife wants touch to focus, and i want the largest sensor ,) until I found out that it doesnt have image Stabilisation. I've never disabled sr on my old k-x except when on tripod, so i dont really know how much more difficult it is to get stable image without SR, and I am planning to use the "zoom" feature (in camera auto crop, making the x70 effectively a 50mm 1inch camera,) which could lead to more blurry images.

Does no SR on the GR makes it more difficult to get stable image at long shutter compared to other compacts with IS?

Perhaps it's a battery saving measures. The main LCD uses a lot of energy. The 3rd e dial solves that. Just a thought.

360 Videos popularity rising. The Theta is spot on

I thought I'd congratulate RICOH for making the correct move in releasing the theta series. Just now I stumbled across this story on facebook: Mark Zuckerberg Launched 360-Degree Videos On Facebook. And They Are Awesome! . Though the equipments used are gopros I feel somewhat proud that RICOH, among other traditional Camera makers, is (CMIIW) the first to release practical and economical 360 still and video camera. It is just nice to know that the company that you "support" is actually innovative and ahead off the curve. Keep up the good job, Guys!

Pentax K-S1!

From the front, the k-s1 is slightly slimmer than the K-x.

From the top, the mirror box is the same but the hand grip is smaller.

This will be the smallest DSLR Pentax has ever produced, but unless it is substantially lighter, it may also be their least ergonomics DSLR (judging from the handgrip.)

It is necessary to be petal. I had used a rubber screw-on hood on my DA L 18-55; even when the rubber is collapsed I can see heavy vignette at 18mm.

Intrigued by this camera. Even more so by the lens. Going only by the specs the 16-50 2.0-2.8 (and weather sealing, and 'just' 650g) is much more impressive than the sigma 18-35 1.8. Well done samsung.

Kalimar 28-85 f/3.5 - Aperture Setting Discrepancy

Interesting. Have you tried taking photos with the lens in A mode set to f/1.7 and then using the aperture ring set to f/3.5, and also using another lens set to f/3.5? That should clear up whether the lens truly has f/1.7 or just a buggy A mode. My money's on the later.

K-3 and the red cloth

Glad you've finally worked it out. In my own comparisons of IR raws (some posted here sometime ago) at 6400 the red cloth does look better on the K-52 compared to the K-3, the D7100 and the 70D. It is even almost as good as the 5D3! The K-3 is slightly less detailed than the D7100 and the 70D. However, since both the D7100 and 70D images are also slightly underexposed compared to the Pentaxes-indicating slightly different actual ISO sensitivity-I would say that against 20MP+ APS-Cs the K-3 is on par regarding the red color rendering performance.

How much do you trust DxO Marks' tests?

Resolution, noise and DR are related, if again we're going with the DXO data. If we're viewing prints, then it doesn't matter. If we're cropping it matters in that although you get more pixel in the same crop area between a 24MP image and 16MP image, if there are more noise on that 24MP crop, it would not be more usable. However, in decent light where there wouldn't be more pixel noise on the 24MP images then you are right you will get that extra resolution.

For the record, I still would buy the K-3 had I the means. It is one hell of a camera and overall arguably better than any other APS-C out there.

Going by the "screen" data sets provided by DXO, even without the ISO80 K-5 would still win. I gave you the link in my earlier post.

You were talking about data, I just followed suit. I did say the DXO final rating maybe subjective so ignore it and just see the DR data they gave us in "screen", which shows there are differences between The K-3 and the others and how it is lost compared to the D7100 and K-5. I'm just trying to convey that we should not discount their data.

Agree. A bit of dramatization on my part. I should just say the K-3 consistently records less DR than the D7100 and K-5 in ISO100-ISO800.

Their rating system could be subjective, but I think they display enough data for our comparisons, at least for me. What more could you expect than a straight forward 14eV vs 13.4eV or 60dB vs 61dB at ISO 122?

What's more, they detailed how they measure the sensors. And here's an interesting point I just found after reading through their explanation:
At Noise & dynamic range - DxOMark it is stated that "We use filters having different light absorption levels ranging from 0% to 99.99% in order to test across a dynamic range of 4 density steps (= 13.3 f-stops)." Now why do some sensor reach 14eVs when the target scene has only 13.3 eV? Turns out if you look at the "screen" dynamic range data, no camera could go over 13.5 eVs at ISO100, not the K-5, the D610 or the D800. From this evidence "prints" exaggerate DR values.

Going back to K-3 v D7100, it seems the Nikon does beat the K-3 fair n square. DXO screen DR data ( Side by side - DxOMark) shows that K-3 just couldn't keep up with the D7100. Both, however pales in comparison to the K-5 series which actually reached 13.5eV at ISo80 and 13.3eV at ISO100, which means it is the best APS-C sensor ever tested. I hope Ricoh didn't drive the engineer who worked the pixie dust on the K-5 away, they need him.

ephotozine K-3 review out

Most interesting thing from ePhotozine, as has been pointed out buy the other forum users, is that at 0.2 seconds focus time at wide angle and another 0.2 seconds focus time at full zoom, it is on par or slightly faster than the any DSLRs up to the D610. Only the 5DIII (0.15) or more expensive cameras (most at 0.1) beat the K-3. I don't know how they tested focus time, but if they are at least consistent, this is good news.

Looking at the series, it seems that using the sigma 70-200 you get higher keeper rate than with the other lenses. Can you confirm?

Sigma 18-35 1.8 art vs HD DA 20-40mm F2.8 - 4 Limited DC WR

I wanted the Sigma 18-35, but at 800g and the big size, despite the excellent f1.8, I lose interest. I mean I cursed the weight of the SIgma 17-70 (470g) and when going on walks in the countryside. At times, I actually left the sigma home at brought the 18-55! And that's on the k-x the lighter and smaller of Pentax DSLRs. The 20-40 don't have 18mm but it's got 40, which is what I need more than 18; and 20 is not much of a penalty. f2.8-4 is more difficult to digest at first, but after seeing the size, the weight, the WR and the look of it, 200 dollars more is not something I will be missing. Love it!

I think it's just not the product anyone expect from this particular brand. This is like what the K-01 would receive had its price was over $1000. This is that Hasselblad-cum-Sony NEX-7 thingy. This is that Panasonic compacts disguised as Leicas. This is an insult to the photography community.

Indeed it is puzzling at first how it can be lighter than the K-3 given its bigger VF and extra control dials. But then when I look at this picture again:

Isn't it strange the angle which this picture is taken? Now, notice that the middle part of the frame is black colored. The top, bottom plate and the mount has silvery metal look, but the middle portion actually look plastic. Or is it black colored metal?

LOL, it's being grilled up by commenters at DPR. Even the reviewer said it is silly. The best one is this comment:

"By Zvonimir Tosic (2 hours ago)

So I presume that in the DPR final score it will have negative points for not having a dedicated video button, as is usual DPR's punishment to DSLR designs?"

Really made my day.

OVF still counts for a lot, and the A7 is plastic bodied unlike the A7r and D610 (CMIIW.) and if you're already infested in Nikons it is more difficult to jump.

The real question is still why DF over other Nikons.

Wow, I don't know why I get hung up over a brand I don't use, even a "rival" brand, coming up with a camera that I feel disappointing. Guess I just want everybody to come up with good products. :D

1. --> No Nikon logo.
2. Such a waste of good leather, unless we can pinch them to pick em up.
3. ...Not sure what that means.
4. Is that suppose to be an advantage? D610's is arguably better.
5. Manual dials... nope. D4 sensor... I dont think so. Looks...Oly's EM-5 or Sony's A7s look better. Smaller...OK but still not that light at 750g.

Not sold.

Some whys:

1. Why's the Nikon logo not printed directly on the chassis like pentaxes? It looks like printed on a different plate, even plastic.
2. Why's there leathery insert on the pentaprism plate?
3. Why No video? (not confirmed yet)
4. Why 2700 bucks?
5. Why buy this over the D610, D800?

I hope they have good answers for those questions.

This is how RAW HDR could work.

I looked at the site and the forum referred to by the OP and couldn't find any explanations regarding 14 stops of DR. If it is the same as DXO then shouldn't the K-5, K-50, K-500 and other Pentax dslrs that use the 16MP sensor able to do the same at ISO100 or lower? I mean DXO DR values for that sensor is at least 13 stops, topping out at 14 something stops for the K-5 series. I thought we can just use average metering on a scene so that no area is over exposed, capture it using raw, pull up the dark areas at PP, and there you have it. I think I've seen K-5 shots here that are originally pitch black still able to show decent image after PP.

Or am I missing something?
