FA 100-300 only autofocuses in closest focal length

Check the mount. You've cleaned it, but I'm curious if the mount is loose, disengaging data pins and asking for focal length. Attach it to your camera and wiggle the lens. How much movement occurs between the lens and the camera?

HSS and Thinking of Updating My Flashes

Thanks for your comments. Although I'm familiar with a lot of different lighting equipment I've never used the Cactus triggers and flashes. I've heard good things about them, and I think a lot of people here on the Forums use Cactus. I used to use Einstein strobes, but switched to Alienbees B800s a few years ago.

Steve, that answers my question about the Flashpoint transceiver as it only has a single pin.

I quite like the Yongnuo flashes. I have some cheap Godox flashes (TT520ii) and the Yongnuos are much better. I also like the Godox AD600, as well as the Profoto strobes. I took this a couple months ago in bright sunlight with an AD600, K-1 ii and FA* 80-200:

I was planning on buying the Godox XPro-P, but it was missing a couple things the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II trigger had. It looks like the mark I is identical to the earlier Godox trigger, but from what I understand Godox removed a couple things (TCM being one of them) in their current XPro and Flashpoint didn't want to go without them so they made their own Mark II trigger.

I ended up purchasing a Flashpoint XPLOR 400 Pro R2 and a Flashpoint Zoom-Mini PTTL R2 flash (Godox TT350P) (somewhat comparable to the AF 360). If I like it, I'll add the Flashpoint Zoom R2 (Godox TT600) (I guess I'd compare this one to the AF 540) and the Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 PTTL (Godox V1) round flash later. Maybe I'll add a Flashpoint 600 Pro later too.

HSS and Thinking of Updating My Flashes

I've used the AF 540 and 360 for nearly 15 years with great results. Although I maintain and take care of my equipment, my battery door on the 540 isn't going to last much longer (already missing one of the two plastic latch slots). I'm leaning toward the AF 540 II due to the smaller size and WR, but I believe Pentax removed the F5P sync ports from the mark ii. I often use the two F5P cords with the Hot Shoe F, FG, and Off-Camera F adapters for HSS.

To get around the lack of the sync port I purchased the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II trigger and some Flashpoint R2 Single Pin receivers from Adorama. Does anybody know if the 540 II would work in HSS with this transmitter and receiver? Or would I be smarter to buy Flashpoint/Godox flashes so I can use HSS in manual flash mode so I'm not stuck with PTTL and HSS? WR is nice, but not necessary.

I'd love it if those of you who own the F* and FA* 300 (as well as other F*/FA* lenses would contribute to the F* & FA* club! - PentaxForums.com club thread. The FA and DA Limited threads get lots of attention, and I think the F*/FA* thread needs more.

Wanting to update... KP or K-1 II?

Both are good choices. If you want full frame, go for the K-1. The nice thing is you can use all your lenses on either the KP or the K-1.

Earlier I recommended the KP, and I still stand behind the recommendation.
Pentax KP vs Pentax K-70 Detailed Comparison

But I thought I'd offer an alternate choice looking at your lenses. What about buying an older K-5 and an FA 77 (or DA 70)? That way you'd have a 35, 50, and 77/70.

I'd suggest the KP. I have two of them, a silver and a black. The biggest difference between the K-3 and KP for me is the lack of a top LCD screen on the KP. Batteries are cheap, so the battery power never bothers me.

The KP is a stunningly beautiful camera. The build quality is way better than the K-70.

The AF160s are easy enough to find used. What I'd love to see from Pentax is a new set of macro tubes with data pins supporting automatic aperture control.

I wrote this nearly six years ago in another thread about what was wanted in a K-3 replacement. I love a nice optical viewfinder.

I'm excited to see what the D FA 21 can do. I too have the 77, 43, and 24. I added the 31 about a year ago. The 24, 31, and 43 are different enough they really don't overlap.

The 43 was my most-used lens on the K10D. The 77 is my most-used lens on the K-1.

I can't wait to see some photos you've taken with it.

Honestly I have no interest in the new D FA 70-200 f/2.8 when I have the FA* 80-200.

Thank you. I don't know them personally, but I've been to several of their fantastic shows. Every time they come to Salt Lake City, which is quite often, I try to go see them.

I used Clinton's A* 1200 several years ago, but this was before the K-1 so it was mounted to my K10D. I might have used his K-01 on the 1200mm monster too. I was surprised at how sharp the image was, but then again it was Clinton's lens mounted to his tripod too.

I'm not sure what he's doing now. It's been a long time since he's stopped by.

Yeah, I'm doing a lot more senior portraits than usual this year. When this senior hired me I asked him to bring a mask, can of disinfectant spray, and roll of TP. I took normal photos during the shoot too, but these were really fun. I'm hoping he'll enjoy these in the distant future, reminding him of unprecedented times.
