K3ii vs Fuji XT-1

Honestly not sure where you have been if this is the first time you have heard anyone complimenting Fuji's colors. Having used both systems multiple times, for me there is no comparison between the Fuji and Pentax colors - especially SOOC - Fuji is far superior (again, to me and I don't think I'm alone in this thought). I do think the K3 RAW has a bit more dynamic range than the X-T1. Both kits have there advantages and disadvantages.

I find Fuji's lenses absolutely sublime, and I've used Leica, Contax/Zeiss, Nikon, Canon L, Pentax, and Olympus. I also don't believe the writer said Fuji has a better lens selection than Pentax, but was impressed by how quickly Fuji has filled out it's lens lineup.

Son Just Purchased Sony A6300 - Wow!

And therein lies the problem. How many consumers want to fiddle with camera settings? Most purchasers of cameras put it on A or P or some variant and use their kit lenses and never venture beyond that. That is one reason technology found in mirrorless cameras is great for beginners and pros alike - face detect works brilliantly (no need to learn how to change focus points) if you are new, or if you are a pro it can be a very useful tool.

As phone cameras increasingly get better, it is harder for the average consumer to buy into a system. Pentax is a niche within a niche of DSLR's. I would guess the average Pentax user is a little more informed about things like weather sealing, etc ... as that is one of the primary draws of the system. With that line of thinking, I would also guess the average Pentaxian is a little more likely to go beyond the green box mode or A and P. But again, that is taking initiative to learn a system, to learn technique and to learn something about photography. My guess is the average Sony user of the A6300 will never, ever begin to use the camera to its potential, but will make many wonderful images because of the technology.

The High ISO Scam?

An example with the 15mm Limited, ISO 3200, 6 seconds, F14, camera steadied on a rock. I don't find the noise objectionable at all. I find it rather interesting that so many find ISO's above 800 unusable.

When I worked in newspapers, high school night football was routinely done at 3200 at 250th or 200 with a strobe and lens at 2.8. The results were more than useable for newspaper work. In film days, it was worse and for college ball no flash allowed. Talk about grain and poor quality, but we managed and got some great shots.

Each generation of digital made my job easier, and the technical aspects of the photos better. AF from Canon and Nikon was great to follow the action as well. Granted, the Pentax AFC wouldn't of done as well, but it works for my needs now and the AF is better than these eyes ....

The High ISO Scam?

come on folks, high ISO is a tool like any other. Some need it, some want it and some think it is a scam. Would you rather have the moment, memories, images to share that are less than technically perfect - or just stories to tell with nothing to show? You can self-limit yourself to low ISO, or you can shoot at whatever ISO is necessary to achieve your goal. Would your client rather have a "grainy" photo of them jumping their horse, or nothing?

Look at the history of photography. How many amazing, incredible, historic and significant photographs have been made that are not technically perfect?

I'm old enough to remember when Auto mode was a "scam," as then plastic with Canon's T-90 was a joke and then AF, who the hell would ever use that? ... Not long before I started shooting professionally, 35mm was a joke among serious photographers.

The tools we have today are absolutely amazing. They of course have technical limitations, as all things do, but those limitations are currently beyond anything we could have imagined 20 years ago.

It isn't just designed for novices to get good photos out of the box. I know several working professional photographers who dumped all their Canon gear (Canon users for over 20 years) to buy the A6000. Several are shooting sports with the little beast as well. That is why I initially jumped on the Sony bandwagon because of their recommendations. Alas, the camera delivered but it wasn't aesthetically pleasing to use for me.

Item for Sale
Pentax 16-50 and 50-135 combo

Asking Price
900.00 USD

Item Location
Tucson (United States)

Item Description
For sale are the Pentax 16-50 and 50-135 2.8 zooms. Both are excellent with little signs of use. Both include caps, hoods and high quality multi-coated filter - not a cheap Tiffen.

16-50 has box, 50-135 does not.

No known SDM issues with either, they have both worked flawlessly. Since I've bought my Limited lenses, and the 100 WR, these are redundant for my shooting needs at this time.

$425 for 16-50
$525 for 50-135

Price includes paypal and USPS priority shipping. $900 would take both!

As a former newspaper photographer, having the high ISO capability of these modern cameras would have been utterly amazing. High ISO is a tool, like any other, that when you need it, you need it. As a journalist, you often have little control over lighting situations and fast lenses and high ISO are necessities. The quality of digital FAR surpasses film. Compare Tri-X pushed to 1600 to a K3 at 12,800 :)

If you keep your ISO below 800, you likely don't really need high ISO, or are needlessly limiting yourself.

I had an A6000 and it was an incredible camera. The A6300 is above and beyond the A6000 - AF speed, responsiveness, etc ..., but it wasn't nice to use for me. It was a computer, had no character. Pentax wins hands down ergonomically and aesthetically. And the lens selection at the time, while nearly infinite with adapters, natively was poor, especially for reasonably priced, quality lenses.

So don't discount the camera - it is a technological marvel. Whether it is right for one person is purely a personal decision.

The 60-250 AF is much much faster than the 50-135 and a good range for sports. I believe it would work reasonably well for your purposes.

Ability to use old K mount lenses on K1 is losing poll!

Just curious why is this worrisome?

What is most important to you isn't necessarily most important to others. I, for example, have no interest in using manual focus, legacy glass on a digital body. If that was my priority, I would probably use something like the Sony A7 that accepts pretty much anything with an adapter. Whereas the other features mentioned, SR, Pixel shift, astrotracer are very compelling to me.

Everybody has their own priorities and while it is nice that Pentax has accommodated users of legacy glass by not changing its mount, it also needs to move forward.

Precision Camera K-3 Repair

Sorry your K3 failed, but every company that makes things has issues, be it with electronic or mechanical components, and to expect a replacement after using it for 5,000 shots is, to me, unrealistic. If (sadly, a big IF with Precision it seems) the repair is done properly, you are essentially getting a new camera. I don't think you have any cause to expect/request a new camera from Ricoh as they are honoring their warranty by having it repaired. Now, had the failure occurred in the first few days of ownership, then yes, I would expect the retailer to exchange the body for a new one.

I'm glad that Precision has been available, both on the web and on the phone to talk with you - maybe they are getting better. Good luck with the repair, and getting your camera back promptly.

What makes someone a photographer?

Someone with a camera is a photographer, be it an iPhone or a $$$$$ DSLR.

What makes someone a professional photographer, regardless of gear, is making money at it.

There are all levels of photographers, novice to professional. A novice, with innate talent, can be every bit as good, or much better, than a professional.
