Macro lenses for landscape?
Posted By Jonathan Mac

It may be the case that in the past macro lenses were relatively poor at infinity and this explained why there used to be two versions of 100mm lenses - a macro and a non-macro - but even then I think it's more likely a case of "you pay either for macro or for an extra stop of light, to get f/2.8 rather than f/4". In more recent times companies tend to have just one 100mm prime lens, a macro, perhaps with limiter switch, and I'm sure they perform very well whether they're used for macro or not.

Perhaps this will turn into the "landscape shot with a macro lens" club :)

A horrible customer service odyssey.

That's a story of an extremely poor customer service set-up. I've read similar cases related to Ricoh/Pentax and the level of customer service is not the reason I buy Pentax products. I've had one such episode of uncontrolled shutter firing on my K3 but it has never repeated so I consider myself lucky. It's a problem that has been reported across many Pentax models for some years and I'm not sure if it's due to a software or hardware glitch but I suspect the former.

Personally I think you should not have accepted anything less than a new replacement camera. Even if there were humidity damage in the camera, after them having possession of it for so long there's absolutely no way they could prove that it happened while you had the camera, and probably not that it was responsible for the strange behaviour.

Cyprus is a member of the EU and due to that you have a legal minimum of two years guarantee. I would write them a letter reminding them of their legal obligations and detailing (with dates and prints of e-mails or other correspondence where possible) the extremely poor service you've received from the beginning. Look into government bodies for consumer rights and mention that you will be sending your case to them if you are not satisfactorily compensated for the faulty camera and poor service.

Arjay Bee - thanks for the correction of Tsujiki to Tsukiji. You would think with the photo below I would have managed to spell it correctly :)

I caused confusion for a poor rail worker the day that we went to Kamakura. There was a problem on the line and while trying to ask for help and an alternative way to get there I asked for the way to "Kurakama":o

Anyway, here are a few night shots from Shinjuku in Tokyo, where it was tough to use a tripod due to the number of people, but I managed.

I stopped buying postcards a few years ago after discovering postcard apps for smartphones. I take photos of my trip, transfer them to my phone over wifi and use the app to design my own postcards, which are then paid for and submitted. The company prints them and sends them to the recipients. True, they don't come from the country where I've gone (in my case I think they're posted from Germany) but that is far out-weighed by the convenience of not having to find a post-office in a foreign land and the ability to use my own photos.

You may well be right. We only visited Fotografiska there, but it seemed like a very nice area. I'd love to go back to Stockholm some time, it's a beautiful city and I'm sure there's still lots to see that we missed the first time.

Macro lenses for landscape?

I'm not sure where it came from, but the idea that macro lenses don't perform well at longer focus distances (including infinity) is thoroughly wrong in my experience. I have two, the DA 35mm f/2.8 Limited and the A 50mm f/2.8 limited. Both are extremely sharp at any focus distance and make superb landscape lenses.

Maybe there are some macro lenses for which this isn't true - most are longer focal lengths, 90mm+, while mine are shorter, but I suspect that isn't the case. Macro lenses are designed to be very sharp and to have very low field curvature, neither of which would be detrimental to landscape photography.

Fotgrafiska in Stockholm is advertised as a photography museum but it's not a museum at all - it's a display centre which can host several sizeable exhibitions at a time. I very much enjoyed my visit and the views over the water at sunset are lovely.

You're really getting some fantastic tones from that XP2. I've never used C41 B&W photos as it makes no sense for me - they're more expensive than most traditional B&W films and development instructions might be harder to find.

My favourite Doctor Who was Sylvester McCoy. Not the best actor but he introduced a measure of mystery which worked extremely well and made the character much more interesting, with a real past.

Of the modern Doctors, the only one who was watchable at all was Ecclestone. The others are terrible, terrible attempts to copy some of their predecessors, not to mention the poor stories and the overly-humanity-centric bias of the whole show. I regard modern Doctor Who as a travesty.

Here's a B&W film shot to keep things on track :)

They've managed in exactly that situation since the dawn of digital SLR photography, over ten years ago.

I hope they don't get too big as if they do they might adopt Canon's model of charging far too much for poorly-built cameras with crap sensors just because people know the brand

Yashica Mat 124G in Stockholm

Why is it that the colours of photos taken on film in the shade come out so much more accurate than if taken in the sun???
