I have a K-1000. It has all of the mechanical ability I need in a film camera. Though I enjoyed being able to use it, I love now having the dslr option.

Wildlife preserves usually contain a variety of natural subjects. Usually ones near water have a number of birds living there.

Interval Shooting

You may also want to try a mode like TAV, take some test shots without using interval shooting to find a good F stop and a relatively short shutter speed like 125, and set the 2 second delay off at first to eliminate interference with the image processing time. If you have NR on, it will also contribute to image processing time, which sometimes can overlap the set interval timing, causing image loss. You may want to check the properties of the images you took that are dark and see what the length of the exposure was, just to get an idea of what was happening, along with the ISO, and F stop that were used.

If doing longer exposures, make sure to cover the viewfinder using the viewfinder cover or something like a dark small sock. I cut the ends off of dark socks and cover my viewfinder with that when I do not use my viewfinder cover.

Nice shot. The subject is well detailed, and the lighting is a bit bright, but still very accommodating.

I had two of the K-5. It is capable of excellent images. The AF is normal for its time and can do a nice job. I have had a lot of success shooting stills and action with Pentax.

Looks good. You can check the properties of your images on your camera or computer to see what you did and discover what is working best for you.

Good luck!

Just shooting and seeing the results as you are doing is learning in itself. You can also try using the different modes and resort to the camera manual as needed to know what their purpose/guidelines are. I myself have used the TAV and Manual modes mostly. The forum is free, you will also have gallery/album space to add or delete photos as needed or not needed. You can use shortcuts in your posts to reference those images if you want to. You can purchase membership upgrades/donate, but naturally there is no obligation.

Happy shooting!

New body or keep K5iis?

I have both the K-3 II and the K-5IIS. My K-5IIS has over 50,000 shutter actuations and still manages to produce excellent shots. My K-3 II also is an excellent camera. Though the K-5IIS provides excellent images, the K-3 II has things like User modes on a dial, built in GPS/Astrotracer, pixel shift resolution option for stills, two sd card slots, and maybe slightly quicker AF. If your K-5IIS does not seem to give you the images it originally did after only 14,000 shutter actuations, you may want to have it checked. If you do have image depreciation and are looking for a new camera to have right away, I would recommend the K-3 II, or if you can use your K-5IIS until the next new Pentax aps-c model is introduced, which may have new features/attributes that you may want, that may be a good idea.
