True, but I still want sharp eyes and eyelashes. If I weren't processing skin, I would be fairly happy with a soft-ish portrait lens, maybe.

It's an incredibly fun lens to use. You see things very differently in 10 mm curvilinear.

question on tele conveter lenses

I suspect this is rig specific. I did testing on my 2 rigs and as a result I have no hesitation mounting a TC or even stacking 2 TCs as needed on a shoot.
Given a lesser quality TC, cropping may do better.

question on tele conveter lenses

If your reason for using a teleconverter is to fill the frame with your subject, then you are cropping 50-75% of your pixels away in the non-TC image; when you upsample to arrive at the same image size as the lens+TC image.

In both of my rigs, using teleconverters and even stacking two teleconverters is always better than cropping the non TC image to achieve same framing of subject. ymmv.

I would've been more interested in a comparison between the D850 and K1 or K1II, and suspect that would be a close match up.
His quality criteria in this video was weak at best and I LOL'd that the model opined she prefers the D850 because it has less detail, wth?
Agree with the other posts, if you haven't watched it yet, it ain't worth the click.

What's the use case for extremely high ISO?

i ran down to Big Sur to shoot bioluminescent algae on a beach under moonless conditions. At ISO 10,000, I was still at a 5 minute exposure to get a dim image. I learned on the shoot that I could even stack 10 images at 20,000 and get a much cleaner image than I had hoped for. I havent had another opportunity to do this since, but am ready for next time.

a couple come to mind:

1) If you are shooting handheld and it is very dark, but you are willing to sacrifice image quality to have any image at all.

2) Stacking. Several successive high ISO images may be stacked and blended to create a less noisy composite image. I had the necessity to do this exactly once earlier this year and the results were surprisingly good.

_____
3) forgot to mention earlier, but yes, framing and focusing a night shot before shooting it "for real" is my normal work flow with high ISO. I'll jam it up to save time waiting for longer exposures to burn in.

Also, don't forget to bring a cloth to wipe your lens as it is very very wet up there, especially with doors off.

How often, sensor cleaning?

never taken one in for a cleaning, ever, but once a year sounds reasonable.
I do use a rocket blower weekly and have also use the sticky wand style sensor cleaning devices periodically with fine results.

DA 300 with TC vs. 150-450

FWIW, I personally found the DA300 to be inferior in sharpness to the F*300, which is a beautiful prime. I also own the DFA150-450 and though I did not compare directly against the DA300, I suspect it wins in IQ vs the DA.

---------- Post added 08-03-18 at 08:26 AM ----------

yup - very good points made here!

---------- Post added 08-03-18 at 08:30 AM ----------

the 300 + 1.4xTC is not going to be comparable to the long end of the DFA150-450, not a chance.
The DFA is unique in that the image degradation at the long end of the range is fairly minimal. Many zooms are good up to a point and then fall off at the end, but I think they designed this zoom to perform best at the long focal lengths.

Telephoto prime or zoom?

FWIW, I compared the DFA150-450 with my F*300/4.5 and my F* was sharper. I ended up keeping the zoom however for the extra reach and versatility. It is a great zoom as zooms go.
