Sticky: The Guide To Manually Controlling Video Exposure on The K-7
Posted By Christopher M.W.T

Disclaimer:

1. I can only verify this works on the K-7 with firmware 1.03
2. This is not my own discovery, it's been based on findings of other forum members and my own experiments.
3. I have tested this on my camera only, others results may vary.

Even though Pentax has not allowed full manual control on the K-7 they have given us control of aperture and apparently so through either programming oversight or on purpose have left a back door to allow manual control.

I. How to get manual control?

1. Go into USER mode
2. Set the exposure program to Av (I have tested M, Tv, Sv, P and none of them work, it would align with my theory that the movie mode utilises its own perverted form of Aperture priority program.

II. Setting the exposure.

1. Once the upon is done, activate Liveview, preferably with the live histogram enabled, I also like to use the dark/light overlay to.
2. Dial in the desired aperture.
3. Dial in the desired ISO. (I believe based on my testing that 100-1600 is the most usable range, however someone else could further test this.
4. Setting the shutter setting is rather trickier, it involves aiming the camera at or away at a light source till you see the shutter speed at your desired value, ie 30, 60, etc and then hit the AE-L button.
5. Turn the dial to video mode and hit the shutter button, you will immediately see the AE-L symbol is still on the screen and your exposure is locked :) as said above this only appears to work in Av mode in USER and no others.

III. Observations & unanswered questions.

1. You can see a clear difference in noise between locking ISO 100 & 1600, this is quite dramatically apparent when you have the dark/light setting enabled in liveview and you have the lens cap on.
2. I am still unsure of the limits of the shutter speed, ie how fast and slow can you lock it or does the camera automatically set the upper and lower limits of this. Further experimentation would have to be conducted.
3. Has anyone been able to pull EXIF data off K-7 videos yet?

IV. Email & Harass Pentax & Their Official Distributors For Proper Full Manual Control.

Facts about the Pentax brand name under Ricoh

People need to get over all the negativity surrounding this.

This whole Ricoh / Pentax deal has apparently been in the pipeline for quite some time, right down to Ricoh quietly collaborating with Pentax on the Q development.

Ricoh knows the value of the Pentax brand and has no intention of getting rid of it.

Finally Ricoh is FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR larger and has more resources than Hoya, this move is a win for everyone.

End of story, now move on.

Look get a grip, it's the initial batch that suffered problems and they've acknowledged it.

It's being rectified and they are repairing troubled models, what more can you ask for?

Why not utilise stacking to get around DFS?

Hopefully pentax will fix this with a firmware update.

Hey i'm innocent, it is rather humorous because people get so passionate, fired up and serious over something like a damn camera. People go to war over food, water, oil etc the rest of you are going to war over a hunk of glass, get real!

It's funny to watch so much fire and hatred over stupid shit.

Zack probably shouldn't have lost his cool, but probably just lost it after reading thread upon thread of doom, gloom and negativity he probably just snapped and sadly Falk was in the firing line.

Unlike many I don't take the internet and what is published on it as serious as I probably should.

My attitude is its a ****ing camera, go out use it, play with it, enjoy it and take some pretty pictures, that's what it's built for in the first place.

It's like the people who are Muslim and those who become fanatics totally forgetting the initial point of the religion to begin with, the behaviour of many on here is bordering on the same sort of sick fanaticism.

To be honest I love my Pentax gear, so far I haven't shot with an FA ltd lens and I don't really intend to buy one either. The discontinuation of FA is of little consequence to me and to many people to I suspect, they are film era lenses are reality is don't fit in with Pentax's clear APS-C & MF strategy. There won't be a FF Pentax for a long time if ever, deal with it!

Shot entirely on the FA50 * DA50-135, with the iso range of 1000-2000.

Since the 1.1 Firmware I found the K-7 was focusing so much better under poor light that I was shocked.

As I have no working strobe all the shots were accomplished with existing light.

Shot in JPEG at 14mp with Reversal Film setting.

All handheld, using AF all but 2 times, shutter speeds never exeeded 1/50.

This is an exerpt of an email regarding the k7s flash sync:

Flash sync could have been upgraded with firmware to go to 1/320 sec without SR and 1/ with it (see Nikon specs.) and the capture rate could have been given a boost with a bigger power supply, but expense was too great. The reason the higher flash sync was not used was the flashes needed, and still need, an upgrade. While they offer high speed sync., the operation of that function is far different from being able to work fully at a higher shutter speed.

Dude what the hell more do you want from an entry level camera?

As for the IrSimple, look up the specs, the speed rates are VERY VERY fast! can transmit a full size image on only a few seconds.

Christ! Hoya/Pentax clearly know something you don't thats why they are a big company and you are no. They know what they are doing and their strategy so far has been successful as it needs to be for them.

JESUS CHRIST! Get over yourselves so many of you naysayers.

Firstly the K-R is exactly what it was meant to be, a K-x upgrade. What more did you expect? a K-7 class camera with top of the line sensor at a budget price point?

Secondly all the moaning about the DAL35 2.4 before anyway has even used the god damn lens?!

Use it first, if it sucks optically then criticise it until then reserve judgement.

Thirdly, so what if it's plastic? well most electronic goods are plastics and are VERY strong, seriously your all deluded if you can expect Limited quality at a budget price.

Once again the lens is what it's meant to be, a budget solution.

Get over yourselves and buy into another camera brand!

What's the frequency of the power in your country? 60hz or 50hz?

the trick is to use the USER mode trick thats a sticky.

Depending on your power frequency try locking the shutter to either 1/25 or 1/30.

Even though I've done nothing wrong, my name and one of my photo recently came up for something I wasn't involved it.

I wish to stress that I've been on this forum for over a year and an active member and even have a 100% sales feedback. And quite naturally want to maintain that reputation.

Wish to thank MattDM for bring it to light what was going on.

And sorry to all.

Regards

Chris
