Samsung GX-20 1.03 firmware....finally

It's still supported on the Australian site too: GX-20 | Samsung Australia

I still own a couple of Samsung compacts. A WB2000 (TL-350) and an EX2F. I quite liked the GX-20 and only updated to a K-5 as a co-worker offered me a great deal when he upgraded to a K-3.

I didn't plan on selling the K-5 just yet, but a relative decided he wanted it so I let it go. The K-1 is probably 4 or 5 months away.

The GX-20 is still supported on the Samsung UK site.

GX-20 | Samsung UK

The GX-10 is also supported if you do a search on that page

I used to own a GX-20 and a GX-10 before that. Replaced the GX-20 with a K-5 which I sold recently. Currently saving for a K-1!

Lens looks good. I look forward to trying mine on a K-1. I'm glad the lens hood fits.

You'll need the Tamron SP AF 17-35mm Di LD for full frame. They are no longer current so you'll probably have to search for a used one.

I've only used the Tamron 17-35mm on the K-5 so far. It replaced my DA 16-45mm as I started to gear up for full frame. I also bought a Tamrom SP AD 24-135mm the day the K-1 was announced as I thought it would be a good starter full frame lens. I'm interested to see how it performs on K-1 too. Hopefully I'll own a K-1 in the not too distant future.

I have the Tamron 17-35mm too. It came with an AD05 lens hood. This appears identical to the AB001 lens hood used on the Tamron 10-24mm APS-C lens. I can't say it will definitely fit the 17-35mm, but should be just as effective if it does, as 10-24mm on APS-C is a very similar focal range to 17mm to 35mm full frame so it's quite likely the same lens hood. You can find an OEM AB001 on ebay for not much over $US10 (including shipping) so it's probably worth taking a gamble.

How does the 17-35mm Di LD perform on the K-1? I hope to use mine on a K-1 later.

FF out in 4 months

I have to agree with 42mp. Trying to market a new FF camera using a 36mp sensor that both Sony and it's biggest customer Nikon have moved on from, would be quite difficult. It would also mean buyers would expect it to be considerably cheaper as it's not perceived as being the 'latest', no matter how good it might be.

If the name has to have a 'K' in it (and why should it?), then ZK-1 would be good.

It needs to be a new name series so it's not confused with the APS-C range, so hopefully not 'K' anything. Besides if it's called a K-2 what will the K-3's sucessor be called? FF compliments the APS-C range. It doesn't replace anything.

Now that FF is here and what do we do with the cropped DA lenses?

Not everyone will migrate to FF. Pentax will continue to make APS-C as well as FF like any other brand that covers both formats. If you don't want to use your DA lens in crop mode on FF, simply sell it to someone who wants to stay with the smaller format.

36 or 40MP sensor. Preferably a new sensor and not a re-hashed version of one being used by another manufacturer (Nikon).

Whilst 24MP has some benefits, I think it would be more difficult to sell and probably make the camera too 'niche'.

An un-crippled lens mount would be great.

4K video would certainly be nice.

A choice of 50mm F1.4 or 24-85mm kit lenses would be a good start.

Flash sync 1/250th.

Higher capacity battery than the DL-i90.

Please don't call it K-1. That name should be reserved for the K-3's (APS-C) successor. The FF series deserves a new series name.

The camera size is somewhere between the K-3 and the K20D. Hopefully no bigger than the K20D.

I have to agree. I think making an FF DSLR the same size as a K-3 would involve too many compromises, like loosing SR. If it's sized somewhere between the K-3 and the K-20D it will be fine.

How to push the Pentax Full-Frame Idea and get that FF out faster...

Perhaps if APS-C had been treated as a new format instead of a sub format of 35mm full frame when it arrived, things would be different? But as most manufacturers then intended it mostly as a stop gap until full frame sensors were more reasonably priced (which they basically are now), many people actually feel like they now want the real thing. Whilst you may like the extra length that APS-C affords your lenses, sometimes it's quite nice if a 28mm lens actually behaves as a wide angle like it was designed and not as something that's more like a standard lens.:)

It's 'cropped' because it isn't full frame 645 Medium Format. If it was full frame 645 it would be 56x41.5 which is quite a bit larger than 33x44. So in effect you you get a similar situation using 645 film lenses on a Pentax 645 digital camera as you get using 35mm full frame lenses on an APS-C camera. Both instances can be undesirable.

Poll: 24mp vs 36mp

I don't think even Sony will use that sensor at first. It tends to let Nikon use it's new sensors and when it has an improved version, it introduces it into it's own cameras. So an improved 36MP Sony sensor would be good for the Pentax FF. Now that several (including Pentax) APS-C DSLRs are 24MP, 24MP seems a little bottom range for a FF DSLR. Especially one that's still yet to make it's debut.

No. It's a Medium Format camera and unfortunately not even a full frame MF at that. It's also far more expensive than most of us would want to pay for a FF (35mm size) DSLR.

I think Pentax should go with Sony's new 36MP sensor which it plans to use in the A99 replacement. This is a generation newer than what Nikon is using in the D800.

I'd put a 3.6" 3:2 OLED screen on the back. I don't think any FF has an OLED screen yet.
Hopefully the Pentax FF is closer to K-20D size than K-3 as I think making an FF K-3 sized would involve too many compromises, like almost certainly loosing SR.

I'm afraid I find your argument a little bit dated. Sony may have got the formula wrong with the DSLR-A900 and the DSLR-850 but the SLT-A99V replacement has been rather more successful (much as I dislike SLT), so much so that there will likely be a FF NEX and other FF models before long. (SR4) Sony developed three new Full Frame sensors. 24, 32 and 36 Megapixel. | sonyalpharumors

With cheaper FF cameras becoming available from it's competitors, Pentax will feel it's premium APS-C market increasingly eroded. It might continue to sell well with it's cheaper models, but that's not where good profits are made. Therefore Pentax (and off course it's owner Ricoh) will have to respond. If Pentax attempts to bury it's head in the sand and believe FF will go away, it will do so at it's own peril. Anyway I'm sure wiser heads than mine at Pentax and Ricoh are already well aware of this.

It should be remembered that Pentax initially wanted to enter the DSLR market with an FF camera. It was only that substandard sensor (that only Contax attempted to market) and the lack of a cost effective FF alternative, that forced it (like other manufacturers) down the APS-C road in what at the time was considered a 'temporary' measure. Well cost effective FF sensors have arrive and whilst Pentax may have had a somewhat flourishing APS-C market in the interim, that's probably not a situation that will last forever. :)

After waiting so long for a FF DSLR from Pentax, I'm sure quite a lot of us would be quite appalled if all Pentax offers is a mirrorless FF.

One of the big advantages of an FF DSLR is the big viewfinder. With an electronic viewfinder on a mirrorless it would be difficult to see much advantage

with a FF sensor over an APS-C except for DOF issues.

Pentax is quite welcome to make a FF mirrorless but to neglect it's potential FF DSLR customers would not make any sense. And yes the K-mount should have no crippling.

I hope that Pentax leap frogs the 24MP FF sensor and goes for the 2nd generation version of the 36MP sensor that Sony will later use in an A99 replacement. This will be an enhanced version of the 36MP currently used by Nikon in the D800 with better noise figures.
