Thanks for the image, but before we get too excited, this image could have been just as effectively taken at 1/750sec with ISO around 2000, which the K-1 would have been able to handle quite nicely. If this were, however a rally sportscar going at speed, or a motorbike, or a stop-motion cricket or baseball action shot, the justification would have been on the money. For this shot, the shutter speed was superfluous. So where it really matters is indeed at high ISO (low light or fast action) but where most people need the advances are in the more used ISOs of 100-800. The comparisons so far are seemingly in favour of K-1 II even with the apparent lack of microcontrast detail, but perhaps those differences are a matter of taste.

Thanks for sharing, Adam, and thanks to bdery for the work in presenting the results. They do pose some interesting questions on the sacrifice of image detail to improve colour contrast and noise reduction.

Tony, you're right about the centre of the image, which is supposed to be the focal point of attraction. It is distracting, which makes it difficult to appeal to, as nice as the Camellia is. Secondly, the background aspects of the image, the multiple leaves in random (natural) arrangement also form a distraction from the centrepiece of the image. Photos taken directly in their natural environment are hard to make into a work of art. Post processing can help but getting the framing right before the shot is taken is best.

G'day Hannah. As you can see we're quite the welcoming bunch. :)
From another Aussie, welcome and enjoy the forum.
I can say that the 12-24 will give you the best landscape shots you could ever take. A very fine lens that I use often. The 55-300 is great in good light, and it can even double up as an OK portrait lens. Lean to use the Av mode to start off with, which teaches you to control your "depth of field" and create the type of effect you want in a landscape (usually with smaller apertures, which are bigger "f" numbers like 8-16) or a portrait (usually with larger apertures like "f" numbers 4-5.6).
Enjoy shooting. That's the main thing.

Photography is all a hoax. Every photograph you see is not real. Just a bunch of computer generated pixels put together by NASA to make us believe we are taking pictures of what we see. It's true.

Build quality of various 100mm f2.8 AF lenses

I have the FA version and I can certainly attest to its build quality. Steel and glass predominate. Its focus ring is smooth and easy to finesse for those tricky focusing situations but damped enough not to slip. Every bit of it is solid, but the heaviest of the lot. Doesn't bother me much as its results have been stellar. If I didn't have it, I'd go with the DFA WR version, given its solid build factor yet lighter and smaller/tighter design.

The OP has done a type and run, though has obviously stirred up some discussion. The best user reviews are in the photos being taken by the lenses in question, rather than from the scores or messages users give to them. I don't believe the negative reports on the FA 43 Ltd for example - and other maligned lenses have given me very good images. You'll gravitate towards the lenses that just do the job for you.

The best portrait photography lenses

There's an extraordinary range of FLs that can suit portraiture, from 18mm on FF to even 100mm on APS-C, depends on the style. The unfavourable distortion is minimal on all the FA Limiteds, and shooting at 31mm only has the issue of distortion when getting too close to the subject (you normally wouldn't fill the frame with the head and neck unless you really did want to distort the face/nose). Portraiture requiring a flatter perspective requires more distance from the subject. Plain and simple.
