Help- K3 exposure questions

lightbender, your camer should not be giving you those results. Those are terrible exposures. I think we can all tell you how to compensate for your problem. However you said it was used when purchased. I would like very much to see you reset the camera back to the factory defaults and then repost a few pictures. Then we have a known starting point to help you. Thanks.

PENTAX K-X NOISE - White and Black Blocks - problem

It doesn't look like dead pixels, more like loose dust particles on the sensor. Do a sensor cleaning with a rocket blower and shoot at a clear sky and see if the problem clears. You may have to do this a couple of times. It looks like the internal dust removal system is just moving the dust around.

K20D overexposure

The chances are the problem is you are having is using spot metering with the Katz Eye screen. The split screen focus in the center is a known problem. Refer to the Katz Eye web site and read their test results. I have one on my K20D also and spot metering is inconsistant to say the least. If you were having good results before, I would suspect you were lucky in the placement of the split screen and it has shifted a miniscule amount. Getting it back to where it was would be trial and error and unreliable.

I tried to find a working copy on the Pentax Web site in Swedish to down load and try. Unfortunatly I keep getting it in English. At this point, I can only recommend deleting and down loading the file again and see if you have the same problem. Short of that, have you contacted Pentax on line. They are very helpful and responsive. I have never waited more than 5 minutes.

It really points out quite graphically that warm lighting is the best for portraiture in all instances. The results bear out what we have been tought for photography. The graphs confirm everything. Pretty amazing.

Wayne pretty much covered everything. Lots of choices.

The answer to your second question about upgrading the firm ware is yes. You do not need to put in the intermediate versions. When you upgrade the older upgrades are included. Full instructions are on the Pentax site with the software downloads. You will come to love that camera. Good shooting.

Why not 18-250mm?

For a general purpose lens, I find the 18-250mm to be the best. I keep a Pentax on my K20D and a Tamron on my K7. Pentax quit making the 18-250 and I think Tamron did also. Sigma still makes one and is availible from BH photo and Adorama. You will not be disappointed, the IQ is pretty good on these lenses for their large span of focal lengths. Great lenses!

Ni-MH batteries with TR 3 Power Pack

You should use 1.5V batteries! The power pack is trying to convert 9V to 330V, by reducing the voltage, 1.2V per cell, you will have a lower voltage out of the power pack. You have two things going on here, there is not enough voltage for the voltage multipilers to work properly and the flash, IF, it fires will not have enough voltage to fully drive the strobe and will have reduced output and can cause misfires. It is also possible to damage the electronics with the reduced voltages but that will be the luck of the draw.

I too, would like to see a good 1.5V rechargable batterie akin to the Eneloop.

Magic Lantern Guides?

The Majic Lantern Guides are a great help in conjunction with the operating manual. The Guide gives good explanations of the different settings of the camera, what they do and why. Which the manual does not always do. Then you will better understand what an item does and if you want to change an item.

K7 custom image settings reset

BGH, Sorry I didn't get back to this thread. To change exposure mode while in USER go to page 209, to reset the camera to factory defaults go to page 290. The book is the best source of information, true you do have to dig a little. But most everything is there. If you change exposure mode while in USER pay attention to the caution on step three, the mode you changed to will be gone if you turn off the camera and will go back to whatever you had saved in USER. Again good luck.

Cleaning LCD for Screen Protector

The best and safest is to use standard lens cleaner and lens cleaning paper. It will take oil and most anything off and will not scratch or remove any protective coatings that may be applied.

"Normal" lens?

You know, I think you are right. It is like chasing your tail. I went searching on the web this morning about what is normal. Wikiopedia, has about the easiest and shortest definition. But even their's implies that it's subjective in how you view the picture. They say that the diagonal of the sensor or film is considered about the normal focal length. Looking back over the years it seems I prefer the shorter lengths. For doing gardens and landscape shots I would typically use 28mm on my LX using slide film, and to me that looked most normal when shown on screen. Most everything else, I used my 50 @1.2 and life went on. None the less, I still love reading this forum and all of the discussions. They shure make you think.

"Normal" lens?

I don't know what it's called, but it is however true. I tried the experiment this evening and my better half, we could not read the other number. Just couldn't do it. It has something to do with where both eyes are focused. The angle is just not that wide.

OK, I don't know what visual acuity it's called. But you try this. Write two four digit numbers 1/2 inch high, place them two foot apart and get back eight foot, look at one of them until you see it clearly, and have a hunch you will not be able to read the other. Now what do you call that?

"Normal" lens?

Marc, Just have to jump in here. Everyone keeps missing the point about what is normal, you came closest with the last entry. All of us know lens manufacturers aren't crazy. When "We" photographers that all started with 35mm film refer to a normal lens and it's 50mm or 55mm FL. It helps know where it came from. The entire primace is derived from "human binocular vision." If you take a bunch of your friends you could run some tests and prove this to yourselves. If you were to take a peice of tape and make a long chart with "0" in the middle and number from the "0" left and right to say 60 or so. Fix you eyes on the zero (trust me you will try to shift your eyes left and right) but stay fixated on the "0" and see how far you can see with binocular vision left and right. Now sence this has already been done, here are the results your going to find. The "mean" of all your wide eyed friends is going to be about 40degrees. The "mean" of all of your narrow eyed friends is going to be about 36degrees.
Now that is on the horizontal axis. When a manufacturer makes a lens, trust me, it is computed horizontaly, vertically, and diagonally to design that lens. Now if you want your can check but I think if you check those "mean" angles from almost every company will equate to a 50mm to a 55mm lens in a 35mm film format. Now the starting thread said he was using a K20D, that view finder is only 95% of his frame. If he is going to compare lenses he should at least use a 100% view finder, and I think he is still going to be disappointed! You just cannot look through the view finder with both eyes!

BGH, Ahab is right, dig out your manual and look on page 207. You can change just about anything to your satisfaction, and store it under USER. Yes, they can all be reset to factory default. It is quite a list, so have fun.

Visual Comparison: K7 max video resolution vs. 720 and 1080

Your charts are good, they would give a beginner an idea of relative resolutions. These same charts are all over and are used in teaching video fundamentals for equipment and transmission systems. Your first column lables are however incorrect. All three examples are ALL full HD formats just different types. Your K7 will also do 1280x720 which is not stated in the first column and a lower resolution of 640x416 for web posting etc. I am a little sorry you are bummed out about not doing 60 frames a second, but I would like to remind you that broadcast and cable 1080 signals and 480 signals are also at 30 frames per second and all motion pictures are shot at 24 frames per second. I wouldn't let it worry you to much. You can over come this short comming by panning a little slower and you shouldn't see any difference. Again good comparison chart.

Cute, if we had military budgets I think we would all consider one of those! Meanwhile, not available until August accounts why Amazon had a 1-2 mo wait.
