I should have clarified this in my post. A FF lens creates thinner depths of field at equal FOVs because the focal length increases.

Their signal processing is pretty poor, though. Nikon and Pentax have made better use of the Sony sensors than Sony themselves.

That's true. It's gonna be either a 24 or a 36 MP, as Pentax uses Sony's sensors as well. Putting the 36 in there will also bring the fight to the A7R and D810, which would be pretty exciting.

The situation doesn't happen very often but what I usually do in that case is select the background, gaussian blur it, and then apply the NR. Looks better than selectively denoising an image imo.

I'd rather disagree about the relativity bit. If all photography is relative how can one hope to give and receive critique? In any artistic endeavour there must always be objective criteria with which you can not only criticize the work of others, but fully understand them as well. I fully agree with you on giving constructive feedback, however. There is always something to improve upon in photography. I think the hidden goal of the giveaway is to get members more involved in the community through their comments and opinions across various discussions. If that comes with a reward, even better!

Couldn't have said it better. I disagree about Pentax having haptics as their only strength, but it is one of their main advantages over other bodies.

Also, you said it yourself, stores play a huge part in which brands beginners will invest on. I think Pentax already caters to the hobbyists and professionals looking for specific features for good prices, but their entry level bodies are so ahead of the beginner choices produces by all other brands. I think having them in stores should be Pentax's number one priority when it comes to product distribution. If you manage to convince a beginner with serious photography goals to buy a Pentax body for their fisrt DSLR, they've invested in the system and they will likely stay loyal to the brand as their skills and needs progress, just like it is with Canon and Nikon. Eventually that might also make a stronger case for a Pentax FF camera.

Same here. I've been saving up for a lens that covers a decent zoom range and is reasonably fast. I'm still hopeful that the large DA* lens at Photokina is the long-rumoured 70-200 2.8. In that case I'll be saving up for longer, as we'll be looking at a $1500+ price.

There are next to none of those comparison images you seek. Its capabilities are really much much better, though. I think its strength comes from the fact that you can get a sharp, noise-free shot from the Topaz plugin while conserving details and textures. Photoshop can certainly handle noise reduction, but it can't preserve the detail and sharpness as well as the Topaz plugin. Not even close. And let's not talk about LR5's denoising capabilities, which I consider to be the poorest of the three.

I'm curious about what some users in the forum had before going Pentax, doesn't matter if you started using a Canon point-and-shoot or a Nikon FF DSLR. I've always wondered what the reasons for the switch (or upgrade) were, and whether it has to do with flaws in a previous camera from a different brand. Tell us the whole story.

My interest in photography was actually sparked by using a Sony point-and-shoot that belonged to my parents that I took on trips. I spent months learning the basics like the exposure triangle and what all the specs mean in a DSLR and their lenses, and then "upgraded" to my parents' bridge camera, a Canon SX10 IS. Fast forward two years and now I have my own K-50 with three lenses to go with that (18-55, M 50mm 1.7, Sears 135mm 2.8). After initially believing that Nikon was the way to go for a DSLR system (silly me) I started to hear about this brand I'd never heard of before. I didn't like many things about the Sony and the Canon and thought their DSLR bodies would be much better but I still found many áreas of opportunity, particularly the ergonomics and handling. Did some market research and made the decision to buy into the Pentax system. My main concerns were features for the price, weather sealing, and quality lenses for reasonable prices. I was hooked after finding the plethora of manual lenses that can be used in a Pentax, as well as the excellent handling and build of the camera (and dat viewfinder).

Topaz Denoise is probably the best alternative to DxO's prime NR and it runs as a PS plug-in. It's much, much better than either LR's or Photoshop's current NR algorithms.

If only it was a constant f/4 or even f/2.8-4. The HD coating and extra 2 mm at the wide end are compelling features but it's a bit pricey for the specs imo.

This. I haven't had the chance to shoot through the MX's glorious viewfinder but I have used the next best thing (ME super) and I felt like I was in heaven. It came as such a suprise that something so clear and bright could fit in such a small body. I had previously tried the 6D and that was great because of the sheer size, though my K-50's clarity and brightness is probably better. Nothing compared to my experience with the ME, though.

Now imagine a viewfinder like that in a modern digital body. Pure bliss.

Contrary to what most are saying, I think I would rather have a ~24 MP sensor. Pixel pitch stays relatively large, which improves low-light performance. With a faster processor it could also make for a more compelling wildlife/sports photography camera which would definitely attract customers to the Brand (Pentax don't really have a dedicated high-speed shooter). Think 8-10 fps capabilities.

Camera stores and electtronics stores in general are still big players towards determining the success of a brand's products. Would you not agree that Pentax would be more successful if its cameras were sold alongside Canikon and Sony everywhere they're sold?

I do believe Samsung is making a pretty big statement with the NX. The three pro lenses they're offering for it also show that they're committed to the future of the system, unlike Canon's half-assed attempts at going mirrorless. You're spot-on about Fujis, everyone I know that has one uses them as backup, vacation, or walkaround cameras.

You'd only have to correct distortion on very poor wide angles. On 90% of shots you most likely won't need to correct anything, or won't mind the very slight barrel distortion created by some lenses. I could see myself worrying about constantly upgrading camera and lens profiles if I was a profesional landscape photographer for an important publication, though.

Not to take away credit from the original, but these two are much better in terms of composition. Specially the second one. If you have any kind of photo editing software, I'd recommend that you increase the saturation slightly to make the little caterpillar stand out more.

The lens choices are a huge limiting factor as well. Lenses that can take advantage of its high-speed capabilities were needed (though big lenses could also cripple its usefulness). It's a niche product, really.
