Animal calls for wildlife?

Yes, I’ve used the Merlin Bird ID app by the Cornell Lab that has bird calls.

It has worked several times in bringing small song birds closer to help fill the frame.

Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX DG APO

I shot wildlife with Pentax for years, started with the Sigma 150-500 and a K3 then bought the da560 and added a K1. After a couple years was really feeling like I was missing a lot of shots so I started looking at other brands.

Canon and Nikon have a great selection of long lenses and Tamron and Sigma also offer long primes and super zooms for them. So I had to really consider if Pentax would be releasing a new 600 F4 anytime soon, and I couldn’t see them ever doing it again so I went Canon.

If you’re really looking to shoot with longer lenses I would suggest adding a second system or switch completely, this is just not Pentax’s strong point.

I would say get the dfa 100 macro or maybe upgrade to the k70.

I had the 100 and it produced great images. It was slow and noisy to focus but for macro if you manual focus that’s not a problem.

You bought on eBay from China probably to save money instead of buying from a US retailer. B&H, Adorama, KEH and Amazon are the way to go.

If they did this comparison for pro wildlife photographers only two brands have the lens lineup for that list.

Service does seem like something they need to improve on, five weeks is a ridiculously long time.

CPS is a great program not just for repairs but also for training and learning events. I took advantage of a one on one trianing sessions a couple months after I bought my Canon gear and it was a huge help with learning a new system.

Pentax should have something in the North America similar, it’s such a huge selling point when people are spending thousands of dollars on equipment.

Online photo posting advice. Flickr? Instagram? Other?

I use Flickr smugmug and Instagram. Flickr I use the most smugmug I usually only put up galleries of shots I think turned out really well and Instagram I only use becypeople kept telling me to use it. I think it’s kind of a waste for me to put a 50 mp image on such a little viewing format.

Watermarks I gave up on a while ago. They really do look bad and are so easy to remove in photoshop.

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

No never tried mirrorless, looked at the A9 when I switched but sony long lens selection was worse than Pentax at the time. Held one about a year ago, felt like a toy and didnít fit my hand at all just way to small donít think I could ever get used to shooting something like that.

It is amazing that Pentax doesnít do any type of advertising, would love to hear their reason why.

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

I can only compare Pentax and Canon auto focus. I used a K50,K3 and then K1 each seemed to be a improvement mostly with the DA*300 and DA560. For still objects they did good and for tracking objects, mostly bald eagles and ospreys I thought they did ok but I had never used any other brand so I really had nothing to compare to.

I then switched to Canon for the greater lens lineup. My first purchase was the 5dsr and 600/4 IS II, right away the tracking autofocus was a huge improvement for still subjects only a little faster. I’ve since added a 7d2 then upgraded to the 1DX2 and added the 70-200 2.8 IS II and also the 1.4 and 2x III teleconverters. All combos in my experience have been much faster in continuous than my Pentax gear and my keeper rate is much higher.

Is my Canon gear perfect, no. I miss shots still with Canon, no system is perfect but for me the switch made sense and has improved my shots. If I wasn’t shooting 98% wildlife Pentax would’ve been just fine.

The DA*300 in my opinion is what you should look for. You didn’t give a budget price so don’t know how much you have to spend but you can find them for $600 often.

I used to shoot with the Sigma 150-500 then the da560 and also the da*300 and the 300 was by far the best for images. I would keep a eye out at B&H and KEH for a used copy.

[/COLOR]Why would anyone buy CaNik for their video capability?

The C200 and C300 look pretty good and then there is the C700, I can see why someone would buy Canon for their video capability.

Some great shots, I want to get to Spa so bad but don't think I'll ever make it for F1 or WEC and also want to get to LeMans.

Really liked the shots of Alonso and Kimi through the halo, great point of view on those.

Two months to fix a lens and you can't complain about that.

If you were a pro photographer and had to wait two months for a work horse lens like that to get fixed why would you choose or stay with that brand?

Not having a program like Canons CPS or Nikons NPS were you can get two day turn around service or a loaner if it takes longer is huge. If you’re a professional shooter a good service department can keep a customer brand loyal. If it takes months to repair a item is ridiculous and if it takes that long with a certain brand you would have to consider having three of each item so you have a backup for your backup.

Over the years the horror stories do seem to be less here but is that because people just have low expectations of precision or have they improved service? It’s a shame Pentax doesn’t have its own service center in the US, I guess they are just so small it’s just cheaper to contract out that stuff.

Android or Windows Flickr Album Synchronisation?

So basically you want to keep full res pictures on your phone or tablet to show when you don't have internet access to use as a portfolio.

I'm not sure about windows or android, I'm sure they are similar to IOS apps. If you'er already uploading to Flicker from your PC and you have the Flickr App you can just download it from the app to your images on your phone.

With IOS from the Flickr app when you look at a image on the bottom right click the arrow and it gives you the option to download to images. From there you just organize them into one folder to be able to show offline.

I can't imagine android or window app is any different than the IOS version.

You also need good lenses and good support when shooting with high megapixel bodies.

A lens and tripod you use on a k3 may give you great images but on a high mp camera you will see it’s flaws and any shake.

Well everybody’s physical capabilities are different so so I’m guessing you will get a wide range of speeds for hand held shooting.

For tripod shooting turning off shake reduction seems to be the preferred method.

I think you’ll have to wait at least a year to see how things will go for them. Rumors are Canon will release a pro mirrorless body in February, probably a 5dsr replacement rather than a 1dx2 replacement but who knows with rumors it could all be wrong.

I think Canon did a much better job than Nikon on their release with a mid range body and high quality lenses than a high priced body and slower cheaper lenses. Reviews of the ef adapter look like ef lenses work perfectly on the R, I’ve only seen one on the ftz adapter but was with more third party lenses than f mount but I’m sure it will work good also.

Sony does have a 600/F4 coming out and with the release of the 400/2.8 this summer they will finally have lenses to challenge Canon and Nikon in the sport and wildlife area to go with the a9.

The only thing about mirrorless I’m interested in is the silent shutter and the possibility of having focus points cover almost the entire frame. As a wildlife shooting those two things could come in handy.
