A 2017 Ford C-Max Energi. This is its best side, I think. The front has awkward triple grilles, and the back is bland. I didn't buy this car for the styling, but for the road feel and the numbers. How many other cars can average 65 mpg over four years, and still be capable of 0-60 in 8 seconds. (Yes, I know Teslas are much faster, but that's another conversation. It's faster than a Prius, which is the closest comparable car.)

We're suffering on many levels from the secondary effects of COVID-
1) the medical personnel who've worked grueling shifts, seeing too much death
2) public health personnel being harassed and threatened by the public
3) injured and sick people who can't obtain hospital resources
4) elderly (like my mother-in-law) who live alone because they're afraid to enter a facility

COVID is straining our health care network in all these ways and more. I'll do anything to help put this past us- wear a mask, stay home, get a shot. It''s the decent thing to do.

Has anybody used Lightroom's new uprezzing feature yet? I not, you've probably used someone else's. With LR, 36 MPx becomes 144MPx in about a minute. That's plenty of excessive data for my purposes, even three-foot wide prints.

Frankenstein adaptation, pentax lens on fuji

I've adapted Pentax-mount lenses to Fuji, and now to Lumix cameras. The whole point for me is to get shift capability. A good manual shift adapter costs about $150. I put my FF Sigma 12-24 on it and it becomes a 24-eq shift lens that's perfect for architecture in tight places.

On my K-3, there's a slot for storage inside the battery grip.

That's the kind of zoom lens I want. These days. F:4 is plenty fast, and on FF lenses, DOF is naturally shallow. When you really do need more lens speed, carry an f1.4-2.0 prime.

Yesterday I bought two loudspeakers made by B&W, a renowned British maker, at a pawn shop. They're in perfect cosmetic condition and working order. They wanted $18 each, but I bargained them down to $25 for both. "Thank you for taking them off our hands,'' the clerk said as I carried them out the door.

"Wait!" you'd be saying now, if you know about audio gear and its brands. "B&W is an elite manufacturer. Many of their speakers sell for five figures. That ain't possible." Well, it's ... improbable, but true. There was a catch with these speakers, which is why I didn't call them a pair. They're single stereo speakers of two different models. The larger one, the B&W DM 602s3 has a 7-inch woofer, slightly larger than the DM 303. The bigger difference is, one has a front-firing bass port, while the other is open to the rear. And I'm using this setup, for now, in a plastic-glazed greenhouse, so there's no rear wall reinforcement.

Setting them up for a first listening, after clearing away cobwebs and wasp nests from my slightly decrepit horticultural structure, I wired them to a large Yamaha receiver. Immediately it was obvious that this experiment has potential. These B&Ws both used the same tweeters, with unique baffling technology borrowed their flagship Nautilus loudspeaker. The woofers are made of kevlar. It's techy! On first listen, the tweeters were singing like angels, but the bottom end sound of the speakers didn't match up. Since the rear ports of the 303s were projecting back out into the open air, the bass player sounded to be somewhere off stage right, too shy to step out in front of the crowd. Nobody would want to listen to that for long. The speakers seemed useless as a pair, but I had one more idea.

Did I say that the B&Ws were my most recent purchase? No, that was the Polk Audio subwoofer I got today at another nearby pawn. Compact, tasteful and powerful, it has the audio controls I need to balance the audio system. The subwoofer claims all the musical frequencies below 60- to 120 Hz, so the B&Ws' mismatched bass sections don't even come into play. The sub anchors the bass in the center, where it belongs. Now, it all sounds astounding. There's a vivid sonic chandelier of instruments and voices suspended between the speakers. If my greenhouse was heated, I'd be out there still tonight, enjoying the sound. As an inveterate bargain-hunter and gatherer, it's satisfying to bag this kind of big game game, a first-rate speaker system or a total of $65. All assembled from unwanted components... it's like the dream stereo system from the Island of Misfit Toys.

Everything's askew. Not a vertical or horizontal line to be found here. Some wide-angle distortion, too. It all comes together nicely, for such an unusual subject.

When lenses get so heavy that they damage cameras from their own weight, something's wrong. Modern lens sizes and weights have gotten excessive, I think (right as a generation of SLR photographers are getting too old to use them comfortably). But it says something about Nikon's durability, too. I've driven around to hundreds of gigs over the years with a FF Sigma 12-24 mounted my my K-1, including some dirt roads, and never dreamed of mount breakage.

K-1 and KP as a duo?

That's more or less my same approach. The K-3 makes my long lenses longer, and my K-1 makes the short lenses shorter. Mix and match that and you gain a wide range of focal lengths, even using primes.
