Not trying to revive an old thread but thanks for posting this and your detailed review as I'm thinking about getting one of these just a do-all camera in some of the not so safe places were I work, and your review was very helpful.

I'd have to agree with you but what about DPR as a reliable source of reviews? They seem to be quite thorough.

Unfortunately there is not a lot available but I found the Ricoh Imaging website in Japan quite a good starting point in that regard:

If you want a professional level camera like your K1, then yes, the K5 or K7 is an excellent choice but if you want something simple, light and compact a K200D would be a great choice. The image quality is excellent with those beautiful CCD colors.

Very much so. Understandably they have a much more established presence in their home territory. I like their focus on their Japanese website on the creative side of photography too, not just the technical. That photo essay is a good example of that.

Yes, an amazing combination of both creative and technical talent.

Occasionally I like to look at the Pentax website in Japan as they have such a wealth of information, esp. as to how get the best out of your Pentax camera.

They also feature inspiring photo essays now and then by upcoming photographers in Japan who use Pentax.

This photo essay by Japanese nature photographer, Takumichi Seo, The Memory of Light, is particularly beautiful and inspiring:

The K-7 seems to really shine in BW. The infra-red filter effect also looks really good when applied to BW with the K-7, compared to later models.

Cleaning K200D

When I bought a K200D it had quite a few dust spots on the image but using just a bulb-type blower removed 99% from the sensor so that is all it may need.

In terms of cleaning the body, LCD cleaner is very effective with a microfiber cloth, while a tiny bit of olive oil rubbed over the rubber parts (after cleaning) of a camera body or lens restores the rubber back to its original black color very nicely.

Why not much love for the KP?

That's a great solution to the KP 'grip problem'. One thing that has held me off getting the KP (besides the price!) has been the relative lack of depth, for me, of the included three grips. Ever the biggest grip is quite small. Of course, the positive virtue of that is that it makes a nice compact camera.

Is that an official Pentax accessory grip? If not, whoever made that custom grip could have a good sideline business. Suspect there would be plenty of demand.

Due to their small size and great IQ, I really do prefer the primes.

Your suggested order for keeping the zooms is exactly what I think, esp. the 12-24. That lens keeps jumping back onto the 'OTH, keep' list!

The K-7 was my second Pentax camera after the amazing K200D and I still have it. Despite being a CMOS sensor, to me the images have a CCD film-like look to them esp in monochrome or if using the inbuilt IR filter effect.

The body design is also outstanding and still the basis for today's flagship cameras. It's been with with all through the heat and humidity of South Pacific tropics for years now but it is still going strong. Despite having a K-3 now, I still hold on to my K-7.

The beautiful natural colors and captured detail here are both a testament to the photographer and the K-7.

The KP has certainly been a polarizing camera for some. I am not a fan of its control layout but the image quality is amazing so I am definitely tempted now and then despite the (now) sky-high price.

I thought I was being extravagant with 12 Pentax lenses but now I see that I have barely started compared to some here!

Pentax just makes amazing lenses. People talk about Minolta colors, well you can definitely say there is something like "Pentax colors", esp with the 12-24mm and the Limited series.

With my current line up, I am thinking about just keeping the lenses in bold and selling the rest as they are the ones I like the most:

Pentax HD DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited (Red ring)

Pentax SMC DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited (Green ring)

Pentax SMC DA 50mm f/1.8

Pentax SMC DFA Macro 100mm f/2.8 WR

Pentax SMC DA*300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM

Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x SHQ Teleconverter for Pentax

Pentax SMC DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL (IF) (Bit bulky but amazing IQ)

Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR (X2)

Pentax HD DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE

Pentax SMC DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED - (1st gen)

Pentax SMC DAL 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR (kit lens with K50 but surprisingly good IQ)

Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL (1st gen kit lens with K100D)

...and that is not counting the 10 or so non-Pentax lenses I have for Minolta and Nikon.

People talk about Minolta colors, well you can definitely say there is something like "Pentax colors", esp with the 12-24mm and the Limited series.

Does Pentax also manufacture lenses in the Philippines? Quite a few of the cameras are manufactured there.

I tend to prefer just using the 21mm LTD as it is so compact, but the 20-40 is a beautiful lens and you can't go wrong with it, specially at that price.

Seems like BH Photo is having a sale on this lens too:
