Thanks. I thought so too on the ceiling light, and I had lots of time to stare at it while bored on night shift and waiting for something to need fixing.

Just an autum leaf that caught my eye one morning. Most landscape type shots are taken with fairly wide angle lenses, but I've been playing with telephotos a bit this year, and like how I can isolate subjects from even a fairly busy background and the way it captures details that would otherwise be missed. Sort of like not seeing the trees for the forest.

If you change your mind about selling to someone in Canada, I'd be interested in the 50 F1.7.

On my way home from work a couple days ago, I drove by a field where corn was being harvested. Glad I had my camera and tripod with, and thought to turn around.

I finally got a K1 this fall, and this is one of my first shots taken with it aside from playing in my yard. I had tried using the square crop mode for this challenge, but for some reason the raw files didn't show up properly in my photo editor. I cropped the right side off this one, and I think I like it better anyway. Taken with my old M28 f 2.8, stopped down to about f8 or f11 for the starburst.

Thanks guys, I had no idea what it was. At first I wasn't sure if it was even real or if it was an optical illusion between my car window and my glasses, as that can sometimes do weird things. I've seen ice fog close to the ground during really cold weather, but not in the clouds like that.

Very nice, the contrast between the light and dark makes the shot I think.

Sometimes the light is just right, and yesterday after work was one of those times. So I went out and took some pictures of the fall colours from near my house.

K1 and SMC A 50 F1.7

Natural spotlight. K1 and F35-105.

One from my yard just because. K1 and F35-105.

Just a spot of colour. K1 and SMC A 400 f5.6.

Here's a hillside that has been burned in a forest fire. K1 and SMC A 400 f5.6.

I took these on my way home from work the other day. I've never seen a sunset with the clouds lit up with all the colours of the rainbow before, and it didn't last long. I don't know what caused it, but it looked really cool. Exposing for the backlit and colourful clouds made everything else really dark, and for some reason I had my camera set for just JPEGs.

I got my dream camera earlier this week, a nearly new first version K1. Here's my first shot with it aside from playing with it in my yard or house. Taken with my old M28 f2.8, stopped down to about f8 or f11 for the sunburst.

I haven't gone through the whole thread here yet, but from what I've seen there are quite a few people using the old film era lenses to good effect. Hopefully I can do them justice once in a while too. I just got my K1 yesterday, a nearly new one from eBay that hardly looks like it's ever been used, and a shutter count under 10k. I took this after work today with my old M28 f2.8, stopped down to either f8 or f11.

A couple ugly ducklings followed me home from the camera store today too, a pair of F series zooms (35-105 and 70-210) so that I've got something autofocus for family snapshots and just generic walkaround lenses.

Anyone planning to grow old with their K3?

I bought a much used K3 as an upgrade from my old K10D last year and love it. Once I saw the pictures I landscape pictures I could get from it with shooting raw and post processing, I figured I had bought my forever camera. I had read about the astrotracer feature in the newer ones, but when I bought the K3, a K3 II was still a family expensive body comparatively, and I didn't think it was something I'd ever use. That all changed once I pointed the K3 up at the night sky and saw how much can be photographed when using a high ISO and stacking multiple images. I spent many a night this past spring out with the K3 trying to get a photo of the milky way that was worthy of printing and framing, and even bought a Rokinon 14 f2.8 for astrophotography. I don't remember exactly when, but sometime last spring I decided that I should try to trade my mostly unused old 645 and it's lenses for a K1 body. It's a pretty small market around here of people looking to spend over $1000 on an old film camera, but I finally sold it to a wedding photographer that is also a bit of a Pentax collector, and wanted something cool and different for hobby use. I bought a near new K1 on eBay, and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival, but the K3 won't be going anywhere. I'll probably keep it and a do all zoom for hiking trips where I don't want to be changing lenses or packing a bunch of gear, plus as others have said, it makes the telephoto lenses look way longer.

LX Grip attachment method

After many years of using DSLRs with nice grips, I found that my old LX doesn't feel nearly as nice in the hand as it used to. I checked eBay to see what they cost, and nearly had a heart attack, so I spent an afternoon in my shop and built one from a scrap of aluminum and walnut. I think I might make another with a slightly different shape and try to sculpt it to the side of the body a bit better, but it's way better than nothing. I've never held one with the genuine Pentax grips, so can't compare. I also need to pay a bit more attention to the size of the slot that the top strap lug fits into, there's a tiny amount of play in it, and it bugs me. I also wasn't careful enough when I was cutting the recess for the mounting plate in the wood, and a bit tore out at the top of the grip.

Digital film roll concept

I recently sold my old 645 film kit after 10 years ownership and barely using it to a semi local wedding photographer that wanted a cool old film camera for hobby use. He kept bugging me to see some shots from my LX, so I loaded it and a Superprogram today, and went out with my kids to see what we could see. I brought my K3 along too, and my 10 year old daughter played with it a little, but playing with film again was a good reminder for me to slow down and think about each shot. My son asked if we could look at the pictures when we got home, and if they would come out of the camera like a polaroid or something. At least with 35mm film I don't have to pack around a different set of lenses, so I might have to pack one of them around more often. I've got them, might as well use them, even if it's only occasionally. I'm still really looking forward to the K1 I've got coming in the mail though.

The fifth one in this series is the one I kind of wanted to post as it's part of what I think is a great series of shots, but it's not quite as sharp as the one I posted, and I think that photo stands on its own better. This guy in the lane close to me got a bit out of shape on the launch, but kept the throttle open, straightened it out, and won the race. These were taken with my K10D and SMC A 70-210 f4 @ 210mm, prefocused to where I figured the bike would be when I wanted to take the picture. F9 for some depth of field, 1/500s and let the auto iso take care of the exposure

The shots above are the JPEGs straight from my K10D, back when I couldn't afford enough memory cards to shoot raw if there was going to any real volume of photos. Here's the shot I wish was a bit sharper, a bit of colour boost and cropped to 16:9 to get rid of the crowd and the stands. I just love the way it looks, 80' or so out from the start line, not quite settled on the bike, wide open throttle with the bike on the wheelie bar and his thumb on the air shifter. I know the previous shot is better focused, but this one is still my favourite of the bunch.

Cool idea and lots of neat photos in here, so I guess I'll play as well. The first one is a fairly large patch of snow in the mountains this summer, taken with my K3 and an old Tamron 500mm mirror lens.

For this one I was just playing with some dry ice in a mason jar with water, lit from the side with a wireless flash. Taken with a K3 and probably my SMC A50 F1.7

Carving by my uncle, taken with my K10D and probably an old SMC M28 f2.8

I've really been liking the 16-85 I bought, but it met an untimely end recently. I was dumb enough to turn my back on my tripod at the top of a mountain last month, and the wind blew it over, which pulled the screws out of the plastic body and tore the lens mount from the back of the camera. It's the first time I've actually broken a piece of photography gear, so I guess I'm doing pretty good. I took it to a local shop that was able to put it back together with new contacts, but it doesn't work properly. No autofocus and doesn't communicate aperture values properly, so I'm guessing there are internal issues as well.

I ordered another used one from B&H to replace it after some humming and hawing about if I could afford it, but it showed up today with issues too. Something loose and rattling inside the lens, and the zoom ring wouldn't go longer than about 50 mm. Plus autofocus was extremely slow. I guess I'll find out how their return policy is. I've always sort of laughed at the idea of paying for a product protection plan, but I wish I would have bought it this time. Have to be more careful in the future.
