Well that would certainly give a good idea of their REAL direction is ... FULL Frame and Mirrorless. I can see about a year before APS-C device sit next to a Kodiak Box Camera and Argus 35mm View Finder model on a shelf somewhere. Seems inevitable somehow.

I'll still be using my K5IIs because that is where my lenses are and I just sold my SpotMatic II about 2 years ago.

Well, thanks for the update. But that appears to be just one man's opinion. One in a confusing array of discussion on this Forum around this issue has left me these impressions about the K-3 line:
  • That the "few" were actually a large number and the issue pervasive.

  • That the K-3ii was now developing the same issues as the K-3.

  • That the fixing was being farmed out to a third party (another tale there), unsatisfactorily, who seems to have suffered tragic consequences, and could no longer continue.

  • That any fix would be in the hundreds of dollars as Ricoh would not fix the issue unless still under "new warranty".

  • That the major number of said issues, as Ricoh well knew, occurred well after such a warranty had expired.

  • That said "fixed now by firmware" did little more than make the camera "three-finger-salute" to allow one not to have to switch off, remove the battery to stop the mirror from thrashing itself to death like a 1990's PC hard drive.

If there was anything else that countered all that I could not find it. Although, even retired I did not have the time to make a comprehensive, detailed and methodical search. I just did my best to make sense of it and on that basis express my opinion that a dropped line with all these issues was not worth it.

Now, if there was an official announcement that crowned the K-3 line "fixed" and issues resolved, I missed it. I didn't see it in the "official news section" or other areas that I could find. Please point it out for me. Because I was about to buy a K-3 from a Forum member and I decided against it. The item is now sold. And, I gave serious thought of jumping products into another product line with a complete FF rig, for the price of K-3 body. But of course, now one cannot buy a new K-3.

Again, thx.

I can see that with the k-5. I think the k-5ii/iis are great improvements. And maybe the K3 would be. But I am not about to plunk down substantially for a camera now discontinued for a substantial plague of issues with their mirror and one the manufacturer won't stand behind to the point they discontinue the line. Maybe the mirror flapping issue is no big deal to some. But to me, behind the focus system, the shutter and its mirror are the heart of the system. Next the sensor, which in the K3 line is stunning. But if other parts of the system are so unreliable ... well I feel for those who have already purchased and have to deal with it. I will stay with the K-5ii for awhile yet, K-3III and vast improvements notwithstanding.

K-5 II Firmware

1.7 is most current. Don' know about the spots on Live View ... strange. Just make sure they don't show up on your final photos. You sensor may need cleaning, if so. Or, there just could be a smudge or particle on the lens (happened to me outside while shooting; sky got dark spot; mine was particles. But with my k-5 it was sensor cleaning).

But your focusing should be better. Use AF Fine Tune to tune the focus on to your particular lens; save. De-couple the AF from the metering, see if that helps. I too have a K-5ii (seems to be the only APS-C camera in the Pentax line that is not plagued with problems). I often find exposure for a certain area my not always be the the area I want in the most focus. Expose with the "Green Button" first and adjust; set with the AE-L button, then half-press the shutter release button to get the focus you want. Set AF Settings to 11 points vice 5 points. Or maybe try 5 points, I don't know.

But I think more is better in this case. That is why I went from a K-5 to a K-5ii. And why, if I stay with Pentax, I might go to a K-5IIs vice anything else right now (k-3III, notwithstanding). K-3 line is discontinued and plagued with issue of mirror flapping. Pentax refuses to fix those out of new warranty, though the flaw is pervasive, I understand. They updated firmware to recycle the power internally to stop the flap but not fix the problem, which could be mechanical. So updating to that line is out. And K-1 is more expensive than I want. K-70 is a cripple with antiquated focusing, way below the k-5ii.

So if you can't get it to work the way you think you want (though I think the AF Tune will get you as close as you can get with the lens you may have) the only alternative in the Pentax line is a K-5iis, KP (I just don't like the throwback ergonomics), or upscale to $$$$ FF with K-1 (then you need all new lenses for FF).

So that is my take on the focus issue and some discussion of alternatives. Hope it helps. It is all what I have been going through myself recently. So, I thought I would relay.

thanks.

As K-3 is now a dead line/plagued with "issues" and no longer in the Ricoh catalog, K-1 is the only up choice, K-70 a cripple, I think I will sell off all my Pentax and buy a Nikon (finally) D750 (used), complete with quite a good lens for less than the base price of the K-1 and have done with it.

I think ok still-life. but not enough interest there ... as a still-life. The reflection appear to me to be the obvious central point. that it is a still like is ok. But I think it will suffer by comparison, vice, standout for the "reflections" contest .
