UncleVanya - very solid magnification with 250 on the 50mm...how much working room did you have? And how much focal length?

---------- Post added 07-05-18 at 01:29 PM ----------

Very cool...that is quite good magnification. How close did you have to get to the bill on each of those shots? Those were using the 150 so I imagine I'd have to get closer with the 250 form what I've read on here.

Interesting...thanks Uncle Vanya. I'm dying to get the Raynox to try it out. Hoping it arrives today. Though I ordered the 250.

WPRESTO, your feedback is awesome.

I see people saying they are using the Raynox on 200mm lenses and similar. What if I put the Raynox 250 on the end of my 55-300mm zoom lens? What effect would that have? Would it be useful? Increase the working and focal distance?

Are the Pentax equipment prices generally better in this forum marketplace or on eBay?

What do you think the focal distance will be using the Raynox 250 on top of the 18-55mm kit lens? What is the furthest distance one can focus at for good quality shots?

Anybody using a Raynox 250 on top of an 18-55mm lens for high quality close-ups? What is the focal distance? What is the furthest distance one can focus at for good quality shots?

Thanks Thagomizer! That looks great. I think that will be perfect for photo graphing jewelry close up including the tiny copyright stamps. So I'm happy I get a Pentax K reverse mount, which I will use with my 18-55mm kit lense. But just to be on the safe side, I also ordered the Raynox kit. So I'll be able to compare the two.

I have a feeling I will want to start doing some close ups of insects and nature like so many do with macros...I've always had an affinity for close up shots (with limited capabilities) of normal lenses.

---------- Post added 07-04-18 at 11:01 AM ----------

Oh, well... now I'm confused. I would have thought that for product closeup shots, close distance would work well since I don't have to worry about scaring something away like an insect and can get pretty close. Steve - are you saying that because the product will be in the back of the tabletop tent, it will prevent me from getting close enough with the reverse mounted lens solution? If so, then as a solution - can't I either move the product forward (closer to me) or just use the Raynox kit lens? Or do you think I will have to plunk down more money to get a dedicated macro lens as you seem to be recommending?

Thanks again for all your sagacity and advice!

From everything I've read, I'm looking at the following options for optimal cost effectiveness. What do you all think? I may do just do option 1 Raynox (great photos by WPRESTO) or options 2 & 3 together. Your thoughts?
  1. Raynox Kit:

  2. Reverse Mount

  3. Filter Kit (like Vivitar)

A few people mentioned the RAYNOX MACRO EXPLORER system, which seems to fit any lens so no adapter needed. How does something like this compare to reversing the lens?

And this a good Raynox kitamazon.com : Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Snap-On Lens : Camera Lenses : Camera & Photo?tag=pentaxforums-20&?

OK...perhaps you do need 1:1 and excellent lighting, at least for those detail views. Ok...on my shelf I have:
  1. Couple of reversing rings

  2. K-mount bellows + several lenses that might work well with it

  3. Sigma 50/2.8 EX DG Macro

  4. Tamron 100/2.8 Macro (77B)

  5. Several flash capable of both on-camera and off-camera usage

  6. A very sturdy tripod capable of low-angle work

So should I just get a reversing ring to use with the standard 18-55mm lens that came with the camera? Would that be enough? Or do I need a K-mount bellows? What does a bellows do differently or in addition to reversing the lens? And would that same standard 18-55mm lens work with the bellows? Do bellows come with lens mounts or do I need to buy those as well? Can either of these 2 options do the trick alone or together or should I spring for a used Sigma or Tamron mentioned above?

And what do you recommend for lights?

QuoteQuote:

  • Tabletop shooting setup (See LINK to Cool Stuff for examples at B&H). The intent is to provide flexibility for diffuse lighting, backdrops, and subject stage in a small space.

  • Focus rail. It is not immediately obvious, but conventional focus using the lens focus ring is rather difficult at or near to 1:1. It is easier to move the camera/lens as a unit to approach the subject at a fixed magnification than to vary magnification at a fixed distance. A focus rail provides this.

  • Focusing stage (optional). This is similar to a focus rail except that it is the subject that is being moved. Positioning is a major challenge.

  • Turntable...aids in positioning and easy means to get front, sides, and rear views

  • Product support jigs appropriate to your goods

For this other equipment above, I have the tabletop shooting setup, but nothing else. Which of these items would be most necessary - and if it depends on what equipment I use in the above, can you please specify? Thanks. I think I def need product support jigs or some way to hold the jewelry pieces esp to get them at specific angles.

Thanks again!

Wow, lots of great responses. Thanks - much appreciated all. My main usage is close ups of vintage brand name jewelry I will be selling on eBay. So it's important that the tiny stamp of the brand (in the back) is clearly visible.

With that said, what would be the best sub $200 and $100 macro or close focus lenses for such a purpose? Also, any actual tips on lighting and such for the best results would be appreciated.

Thanks again folks!

What do people feel are the best low cost Pentax K (fits the K-X) macro lenses? I mean sub $150 or $200.

Thanks!
