What's your favorite 2008-2013 APS-C Pentax DSLR and do you still use it?

When I moved from film to digital I started with the K10D which still produces nice results at lower ISO's I then moved to the K7 which was a better camera but was not really the improvement in image quality that I had hoped for. Very noisy sensor. My next DSLR was the K3 in late 2013 and I use it to this day. In fact the corners are even 'brassing' (magnesiuming) I'm still pleased with it but am ready for a new model. The KP did not strike me as an upgrade. I also have a K-01 which has the best sensor of my bunch and also has amazing battery life considering its a mirrorless camera.

Very nice to meet another film shooter. Personally I dont bother with a meter for the Spotmatics. I often have a little digital point and shoot that I use as a light meter. Another thing to test out with this camera is the fast shutter speeds to make sure they work properly. The only way to be sure is to run a roll of film through it and make sure that the exposure is even across the entire frame.

All the best from a fellow Lower Mainland film photographer.

I really like the UC-1 both for its small size and its decent 32mm lens.

I've written about them several times so its easier to just provide a link to my blog posts.

I should add. People ask stupid amounts of money for this camera. In my opinion its a $10-$20 camera. The Ricoh R1 is better, The Konica Big Mini is better the Oly Stylus Epic is better. Its cute but its not worth over paying for.

I have not but thank you for bring attention to it. I've been using an aquarium heater that I modified. I've been thinking about how to upgrade it by hacking a sous vide heater but this is a far better idea.

K3ii replacement

It's approaching 5 years since I recieved my K-3, I have been in the pattern of updating every second iteration or so. K10D->K7->K3 (and a K-01) so I am more than ready for a new camera. I have to say the K-3's noise performance seems like a place I could definitely stand to have improved. I would also like to see 4K video now. That would be enough to prompt me. Why not a K-1 then? I prefer smaller cameras and even find the K-3 and a couple lenses too heavy for some situations.

It seems likely that it would be a system of processing where it increases the spacial resolution of an image by combining the data of multiple sequentially captured images. I.E super resolution there are plenty of patents for this if you search for it.

If there was a compact camera with a 35mm lens wouldn't this also provide a 24.5mm solution much like the Ricoh R1s with its 32mm and 24mm lens.

35mm and 24mm are two very useful focal lengths.

While it may be true that the K20D doesn't match the high ISO numbers of new cameras there is nothing to prevent great night time photography. They key is a tripod.

rumored Pentax mirrorless camera - something between K1000 and K-01

I use a K-3 for things that it's good for but I long for a smaller lighter APSC mirrorless. On trips I tend to take the K-01 but would love to have something like it with an EVF. Keeping the K mount registration distance would be a good move I think in the current market rather than a new shorter flange distance. It's too late for that move now. My Q7 has also been pushed to the less used pile because of my Fuji x30 and it's good EVF.

How to filter bath water?

I'm in agreement with those suggesting buying distilled jugs of water for the mixing. The scratches are not going to be caused by the water per say but something in it or drawn across the film at some point.

what kind of film should I get?

Im going to make an assumption here that you are going to scan your film in which case you have a lot of control over the final look. If that is the case then its more about grain and scannability and ektar is the king in my opinion. I also love the beautiful creamy skins you get with Portra plus its a faster film. Cant really go wrong with either Superia is my cost saving dont care this camera might not even work film.

---------- Post added 04-26-2016 at 12:50 PM ----------

That ones Portra

And thats Superia which is a good general film but never impresses me as much as Portra. Sorry I didnt have two similar images at hand but that shows the sort of usage ive settled on for the two of them.

The state of film 2016 (Emphasis on 35mm colour negative, C41) | Wallace Koopmans Artlog

I did a recent post about availible colour films, it may help. As for Agfa currently its been suggested that its rebadged Fuji but when looking at both emulsions I dont believe thats the case.

That's weird for Fuji 200 because that looks a lot like what happens with film that doesn't have an anti halation layer. I think builttospill is right though because of the way the white light looks like a rainbow.

They ar being very open about the lenses which is good and letting the community determine what is good or not. They haven't cherry picked the best lenses to include when the site opens up. There are some known stinkers in there like the 80-320.

I'm wondering if anyone had a look and has feedback and how many people attended.

As an aside Pentax Forums is strange in that people are chided for creating new threads so they end up talking about the most banal unrelated things in every imaginable thread. Nothing like combing through pages of a thread only to find nothing relating to the actual topic. (Yes I am aware of the irony of this comment but I dare not start a new thread in case someone had once before)

Breaking the 30 Second exposure barrier with interval composite

Perhaps each variation has its purpose. This way though allows for easy adjustment of the exposure time by the setting of the number of exposures and the automating of the process including setting a specific start time IE enough time for you to get into the scene yourself.

---------- Post added 03-31-2016 at 01:53 PM ----------

Yes you would need to capture many more short exposures to approach any type of smoothing. It works best at extending already long exposures. This images was created using that technique.

I would recommend any of the ME variations (except the F) or Super Programs but my favourite is the MZ-6 although without the grip it takes expensive batteries. A K1000 is also a great camera. I think starting out though it's worth ensuring you get a working camera. You really don't want to put up more barriers to what already requires a level of dedication to do.

Thanks for the questions Mark. The save process setting will in addition to creating the composite save each captured image as a separate file.
The reason I do not use average in this case is that I want all the exposures to be summed. If you use average then items like the flashes will be diminished by each subsequent exposure in essence they will be averaged away. Average is good for other things like smoothing flowing water ect.
In this case I arrived at the 2 minute exposure by metering with a higher ISO setting. I don't recal the exact values at this moment but say you get 30 seconds at f4 with an ISO of 3200 then if you were to lower the ISO to 800 it would be 120 seconds to achieve the same exposure.
