Yay! Ricoh Imaging will announce a new camera this month or next month! (Nokishita)

Just for the record, the superb D500 came out 7 years after the D300s, on 2016. From 2012 you can find hundrends of threads of Nikon fans demanding a new high end APS-C sport oriented camera. They felt they were forgotten by Nikon and many said they were considering jumping ship to other brands (with the Pentax K-3 being brought up quite often).

On 2016 CP+ D500 was announced and the Nikon officials were declaring:
"Was the D7000-series ever meant to replace the D300-series?

We were hoping that the D7000 series would cover a portion of the customer base that used the D300S, but the customers continued to say that they wanted a replacement for that model, so thatís why we made the D500." (source: CP+ 2016: Nikon interview - 'the D500 is the D300S replacement that customers wanted': Digital Photography Review)

Now that might reminds you of something (K-3, K-3II, KP). Pentax is quite smaller and I feel that they are pushed by their base to release a K-3 succesor, as this was not their initial plan when KP was released.

PS: I feel that when the new APS-C will be released many ex-Pentaxians will sigh for the times they were shooting Pentax. How do I know? This is what history has shown so far. Pentax is slow in releasing new equipment, but most times it well worths the wait.

K1 Mode Dial Failure

I didn't imply that you dropped the camera, I just said this would explain that something is broken. The K-1 issue was (as they seem to have taken care of it and all users who faced this problem - including me - found out that our bodies were from the same batch) that the camera was "stuck" at the M mode no matter what mode you had put the selector. The selector it self worked without any signs of uneven friction or strange behaviour both at the locked and unlocked modes. The repair was to change the mode dial selector with a new one. They told me at the service that it was an easy fix that took 1-2 hours and since I got my camera back I had no issue at all. Worst case scenario for your K-1II would be to require a new mode selector too, which is not so awful as I told you.

That issue is completely different to the problem initially reported for some K-1s from a specific batch. It has nothing to do with it (read details if you like at users reports in this thread). If you had mounted an old K-mount lens the behavior would be normal, but the not working locking switch and the friction/resistance make me feel that something is broken. If you haven't dropped your K-1mkII (easy to check at the service) then it might be an isolated problem to your camera or a "new issue" on K-1IIs, if more users find same issues in the future.

PS: Read this for descritption of the problem with the K-1s...

The new Bigma! Since the older 50-500 Bigma is so popular in K-mount (I was also very satisfied with the lens myself) I don't see why the new improved version wouldn't be popular too, if it was also offered in K-mount...
Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I would buy it without second thoughts, even now that I own the DFA 150-450 since it is the best solution when you want to take only one lens and be able to take high quality pics under various situations. It is so pitty that the monsterous K-1 won't be able to squize the best IQ out of such a lens... Being S lens (weather-dust sealed etc as opposing to the old lens) makes it even more a perfect option for Pentax cameras.

Interesting indeed! I think Pentax will firstly take avantage of the gap that will be left in the FF DSLR market, which even for the Canonikon is inevitable after their turn towars MILC. At some point they may get in the MILC too but as the article says a great DSLR with OVF/EVF option is the way to go for Pentax IMHO.

So my friend you see that what you're asking is Pentax to fulfill your needs and give you something that suits your requirements. Everybody wants that and is perfectly normal. You chose the M4/3 because it covered your needs/particularities, I chose Pentax for the same reasons (top IQ, affordable high quality equipment). Bear in mind though that now Pentax already covers my (and other Pentaxians') needs and you are expecting a future project from them to suit your needs that it may never materialize! I would also love a FF camera with OVF in the size of a M4/3 body and a 600/4 lens in the size of the superb Olympus 300/4 that gives the IQ of my K-1+DA 560, but you can't beat physics and optics laws! So you have to compromise with a system that covers most of your basic photographic needs. It would be pointless to buy myself an Olympus M4/3 and get in some fora with Olympians (is that how they are called? ) and complain about Olympus not releasing a FF or a MF system... It makes no sense, my choice was wrong in the first place. I don't say that you do that, but many in here are doing it. It's nice to make proposals or say ideas of how Ricoh/Pentax should move on but on a realistic basis. There is a difference between wishful thinking and ideas on realistic evolution steps. Again I highlight that my comment is general not personal. I doubt based on the facts up to now, that Pentax next release would be a "D500 killer" APS-C with Sony MILC video capabilities that will sell for less than $1500 and will be smaller and lighter than the KP. But they can make a great camera with some innovative features a new improved AF module and even better sensor that will again hit the top in APS-C IQ with excellent high ISO performance and sport oriented like the K-5/K-3 models were :)

PS: the K-1+DFA*70-200 is a really heavy combo indeed! But the IQ it gives is nothing but superb!

I've read your opinion and since I also shoot mainly aviation photography we seem to have the same interests, but my philosophy is very different than yours.
I've shot M4/3 cameras and got great results in terms of AF performance and burst rate-buffer but you seem to not pay much attention to the results. What you get is images in the end and the IQ of the M4/3 sensors was mostly on par with my K-5IIs and often worst. So this system gives me nothing more than I had. I'm not interested in quantity of images. I have tsousands of aviation photos. When I bought my K-1 that was a whole new world that was opening up in front of me... I was amazed by the IQ and I can't (and don'teven want) explain this to people who haven't shot with the K-1 (or -mkII). Now that made the difference to me and it makes the difference to all those who see my pictures now. If you have selected to get the most pics in an airshow then the M4/3 or a D500, 7DII might be the best option for you. But not for anybody.

Now concerning the Pentax future and philosophy, all I want is to make the great K-1 even better in terms that lags behind competition and make another great APS-C with the same rational of the K-3. In other words stay at DSLR world and make the best FF and APS-C cameras they can give us. That is all I need and I see that this is the philosophy of Ricoh/Pentax as well, so I'm glad I'm their customer :)

PS: I'm preparing an article based on my experiences with Pentax (and mainly aviation photography), talking about all the pros and cons I have faced so far as objectively as I can :)

PS2: In order to be completely clear the question is couldn't I get the same IQ with Canonikon FF equipment? The answer is sure I could. But I have bought all my Pentax equipment for aviation photography in more or less half the price of a new 600/4 lens from these companies. If I had >20.000€ to spend or I was a pro getting his equipment for free I would shoot Nikon preferably or Canon, but I'm not one of these guys and Pentax gave me the chance to get similar results with its great gear! I'm grateful for that.

Gel sticks for sensor cleaning?

I had used the Pentax stick on my K-1 a few times with great results for removing some spots that were persisting after roecket blower use. I even bought a magnifying glass and light system for viewing the sensor clearly. A few days ago I tried to quickly clean the sensor from one big spot as I had an important shooting. As it was late I didn't get enough precautions (I always perform it on a clean surface and also on a clean soft cloth. Adding the magnifying lens system though (for first time) gave me a very clear view of the sensor (I could see all the dsut particles etc) but made the cleaning more difficult as I had to hold the stick from its end in order to reach the sensor... And as a result the stick slipped from my hand and fell on my desk... I used a new sticky paper to clean its surface but also the side surfaces and after checking it that I could see no dirt on it, I tried to clean the spot on the sensor... Then disaster struck! It left so much dirt and dust on the sensor that I was panicked that I ruined my sensor/camera!

First thing in the morning was to take my camera to proffesionals for cleaning and thanks god, no problem it is clean again, though the technician told me that it had a lot of dirt and oilly marks on a spot that took him time to completely remove them...

I lost half a day of the shooting I was planning but more important was the fear and anxiety that I ruined my camera... So my conclusion is, if you are very scholastic and you can do things in the proper way without any rushing, the sticks work as advertised and remove the dirt from your sensor. But you have to be really careful and with a steady hand otherwise just avoid this method (or any method) and take your camera to a professional even though it costs a lot more...

You're right that the K-50 is a bit newer (released some months after the K-5IIs) but having owned the K-5, the K-5IIs (I sold the K-5 and kept the 5IIs) and extensively used the K-50 (my best friend who I introduced into the DSLR world and Pentax bought it) I can tell you that although the K-50 is a great camera the K-5 series are even better and especially the improved K-5II and IIs. Moreover you can feel when you hold the cameras from the ergonomics and the design that the K-5 series are meant as professional cameras (they were the flagship of APS-C category) and trust me the low light capabilities of K-5IIs are clearly better than K-50.

Don't get me wrong, if you have decided on the K-50 it is an excellent camera, but if you are in between I would recommend the K-5 (IIs even better). Finally for what it's worth here is the DXOmark score of those sensors that gives an idea of what I'm talking about (vs the D500 which is like a benchmark for the APS-C cameras from its introduction):
Nikon D500 vs Pentax K-50 vs Pentax K-5 IIs

The DR of the K-5IIs is impressive and everytime I open a RAW file on CR, I'm impressed of how flexible and full of information their files are! Even compared to the K-1 files

Anyway, I would recommend to find those 2 bodies in a shop (or a fellow Pentaxian near you) if possible and hold them-test them to make up your mind (if as I said earlier you haven't decided yet!) :D

You're welcome Pink. $350 is a budget that can get you a very good camera and a 18-55 lens to begin with and enjoy photography! :)
The K-50 is a really good camera to begin with, but as @PJ1 wrote above, I would also recommend the K-5 and even better K-5IIs as those cameras are excellent and I consider them proffesional tools capable for pretty much any type of photography! You will have it for many years to come and you won't feel the need for better IQ or ergonomy! I still have mine (K-5IIs) and still is an amazing camera ;)

Take a look, I did a quick search and you can find used cameras for your budget:

Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?
Posted By redpit

I couldn't read all the propositions in here and I'm sure that Adam and the rest PF people will do another great job at this interview and will be interesting for sure for us the Pentaxians.

Lately in here there is so much whining that becomes quite disturbing and I've ended up unsubscribing from threads due to this negativity that seems to constantly leading the controversy to whether or not Pentax is doomed, Ricoh has abandoned Pentax etc etc along with posters that switching away from Pentax and go to the perfect worlds of other systems...

After this short introduction to put you in the mood, I would love to hear from the Pentax officials a few words about Pentax and the future, the vision and the philosophy in general.

I don't care so much about specific equipment (I do but I don't care to know dates and specs, these will be revealed in time - another parenthesis here - the release of the K-1 and now the DFA* 50/1.4 showed me that Ricoh/Pentax are capable of delivering highest level equipment, at least as good as the top players' offerings, so there is no lack of skills or tools). I would like the Pentax officials to say a few words to the loyal pentaxians, those who are thinking of joining Pentax and those who are thinking of jumping ship. Freely without restrictions, in this highly competitive environment with new releases, the turn to MILCs and high end expensive cameras, what Pentax people would like to say to their customers but also all photographers in general about Pentax and it's vision.

Thank you.
