Well now what?

Yes, I don't understand why Ricoh discontinued the K-3II without a having a replacement. The KP is a downgrade in many respects, and clearly a successor in the KS line, rather than the K-7/5/3 line.

1. When can we expect an APS-C flagship succesor in the K-7/K-5/K-3 line?
2. Can we expect a WR tilt / touch screen combo in FF and APS-C any time soon?

Very good news indeed! Pentax makes fantastic APS-C bodies and lenses. I can't wait to see how the K1, KP and other technologies will be used in the next flagship.

Is it possible?

B&H can't ship cameras with batteries to international destinations! Amazon can.

Thanks Henry

Yes, I was aware of the reason, but can I suggest B&H consider alternative couriers like DHL? That was really my question: is B&H actively working to solve this issue or should I not bother?

I tried to take advantage of B&H's end of year special on the K-1, but was unable to complete the transaction because
"There are currently no shipping methods available to that location due to carrier regulations regarding products containing lithium batteries. Please select a different shipping destination or remove these items from your cart." has no problem shipping cameras with batteries to South Africa. I recently bought a Sony RX100III in August and Panasonic FZ2500 in September, both of which I would have bought from B&H but instead bought from Amazon. Both arrived safe and sound, shipped from the US with their batteries by DHL and UPS respectively.

I reported the problem to B&H in August, and thought it would have been solved by now.

Is the Pentax K-5 a classic ?

The K-5 was good, but it did suffer tungsten low-light and fast lens focus issues, which were resolved to my satisfaction in the K-5II/s.

Ergonomics and great sensor (and value for money) make the K-5II a classic for me. That's why I have two of them . I'm able to take great landscapes and make really decent prints of 75 cm (30"), sometimes even hand-held or with a monopod, something I wasn't able to do with previous cameras. Subsequent cameras, even the K-1, haven't been compelling enough (for me) to move away from the K-5II. You could say the K-5II hit my sweetspot of value for money, ergonomics, dynamic range, function and output, which I suppose makes it a classic. But I will look at the Pentax APS-C K-3II successor as a possible replacement.

Negative Adorama Experience; buyer beware

Thanks for the heads up. I think what you were attempting to do was NOT unreasonable in light of the assurance you received from Adorama employee, Mr. Lior Itzhak.
Adorama appears to have gotten tripped up by their own weak business processses.

I think the lessons are -
  • Adorama isn't set up well to deal with deadlines or promises made by their employees;

  • Specifically, Adorama's processes appear unable assign a specific employee, like Mr. Itzhak, to shepherd or oversee a case from beginning to successful conclusion;

  • Specifically too, Adorama's employees like Mr. Itzhak, who make the promises don't appear to be able to control Adorama's business process to ensure their promises made on behalf of the company are sucessfully met by the company.

I really hope you get your gear back without further fuss and stress.

Yes, Sigma are very good and set the bar for Pentax. In June last year they collected my 50-500, replaced the mount and delivered it back to me on the same day.

Two thumbs up for Sigma service.

Nature Good crop, bad crop?

Sometimes, the power of an image is not what's there, but what's NOT there. Imagination plays a big role in interpretation IMO. It's not necessary to show everything -- our minds can fill in what's missing, just like we fill in the tops of the trees and overcast, snowy sky without them being shown explicitly. The crop works because the composition works -- and we don't need to see the feet at all because we imagine the deer is standing is snow and not on something else.

I think it's a very nicely composed image, crop and all.

Info needed on 1958 Pentax K

I think 1958 is the correct date. You may be thinking of Pentax's K bayonet mount, which indeed was introduced in 1975, well after 1958. But the Asahi Pentax K camera was manufactured from 1958 to 1959.

Some more love for the RX100II. I recently took the RX100II with me, along with my K-5II, on my vacation to Umhlanga and St Lucia in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. This camera is perfect for taking along on my daily 10 km runs too.
I'll post some examples over the next few days.

Sorry to see you go. I agree that Ricoh ought to stand by their products and customers, particularly if there are latent defects like this seems to be.

Ricoh, Nikon and others could learn from Sigma's excellent handling of its K-1 mount problem. I had my 5-year-old 50-500 OS HSM "Bigma" collected, cleaned, repaired with the new "K-1 proof mount" and delivered back to me free of charge by Sigma this week.

Yes, definitely. The bevel on the new mount is much deeper, as you can see on the image below.

Now I need to get a K-1 to not scratch it on :)

What would be an inexpensive upgrade from a K10D. I want video capability

If you're looking at the K-5, I'd recommend the K-5II or K-5IIs. The autofocus in the K-5II/s is much more accurate than the K-5 overall, and especially in low light and tungsten light.

The K-5 and K-5II/s also give you the ability to use the camera's in-built SR during video recording - a very useful feature that has been removed from all subsequent K-series cameras up to and including the brand new K-1. The downside is you may pick up SR audio noise during recording if you use the camera's in-built mic. But use an external mic instead - the K-5/II/IIs series has a external mic socket.

I had my 50-500 HSM OS Bigma updated in Cape Town by Tudortech, the Sigma agents in South Africa. They collected the lens, cleaned it, replaced the stainless steel mount surround band, and delivered it back to me the same day at no charge.

I bought the lens almost five years ago and am very, very impressed by Sigma's committment to their customers. Other manufacturers could really learn from them. Loyalty deserves loyalty.

Thumbs up Sigma!

Hi Rastadori

Welcome to the Pentax community! I hope you'll find yourself at home here.

The DA* 55/1.4 is a very good portrait lens, as is the FA 77/1.8. Have a look at the sample images here on Pentaxforums

DA* 55/1.4
FA 77/1.8
DA 50/1.8
DA 70/2.4

Personally, I use the FA 77 for head shots and the FA 43 for half body shots.

For landscapes I use the Sigma 8-16, FA 20-35, Tamron 28-75 and DA* 60-250.
But I would recommend you look at the new DA 16-85. It's weather sealed and so will complement either the K-70 or K-3II nicely.
Greg Nyquist is a landscape photographer who has reviewed the DA 16-85.

Also, why not poke around the Lens Sample Archive and use the images there to help you choose?
