Hi guys. Been playing Racer the last three days. Rochester, NY to near Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Next day to Bismarck. ND to finally clear up the last of the family business there. Then to Fargo, ND for the night. Actually stayed in almost brand new Howard Johnson's. I thought that they were out of business. Today from Fargo to western Indiana near Chesterton. Tomorrow the last 500 miles to home. About 3,100 miles in 4 days. Alas, not to for a quick trip to Yellowstone so I had to content myself to sitting a bluff in Bismarck overlooking the Missouri River for a bit. One of my favorite places to ponder stuff. At least I got past Chicago this evening. It will make tomorrow's drive much easier.

Quite frankly the trouble with these types of tests is that they never satisfy everybody. Someone is always asking for more tests with sightly different parameters. Then when some nice member does it and even more requests come in. The stated purpose of the upgrade is to improve performance of these cameras with the new 50mm f1.4 lens and then the usual reliability improvements.

Once while testing a new blood analyzer I came across a software bug. I sent in the paperwork and a few weeks later a couple of the programmers came to see me with big smiles on their faces. I had started quite a journey for them. I had a better chance of winning the Powerball Lottery back to back than coming across that bug ever again. They fixed it and it went out in the release notes as one of the many "reliability enhancements" in the next upgrade. That is how I look at these sorts of unnamed bug fixes. For the record, I have never won anything from the Powerball Lottery at any level.

Well Norm, that professor made that statement almost 50 years ago. If he is still around he would be in his 80's at least. We had to do three art projects as part of the class but could not use photography for that reason. He was about the most closed minded professor I ever had in college. He believe that as engineering students we could never appreciate art in the first place and probably did not even want to be in his class. Sadly I was really looking forward to the class. Not only a chance to learn a bit about art appreciation, but also as a break from chemistry, calculus, photographic chemistry, physics etc.

Even the term artist is fairly new in history. People were thought more as craftsmen who sometimes created art. As to me, you use a camera to record a scene. Is the photograph of the scene art or has it merely captured something that already has it's own intrinsic beauty? Besides, who determines what art is in the first place? Can something be beautiful and not be art? I have no idea. Is the Pieta art or is it a masterpiece made by a master craftsman? If Andy Warhol's realistic painting of a Campbell soup can is art, then every photograph of a soup can is art too. Or is the soup can the real work of art?

The professional photography students at Rochester Institute of Technology had a saying about a photograph. If you can't make it good, make it big. If you can't make it big, make it color. I think that this came close to hitting the nail on the head. Are it about emotional impact. Nothing more, nothing less.

FWIW, I take photographs because I cannot paint worth a darn. I know because the same professor who said photography is not art only gave me a C on my art projects. I thought they were better than that.

To quote you, "Too funny" A lot of great photographs in National Geographic, but they are not all works of art. My fine arts teacher in college flat out stated that photography was not an art at all. We all know that college professors are never wrong. They tell us this all the time.

I admire the guy. He built a very successful business supplying a need. Lost it all to natural disasters and a bout of mental illness. Now he is just trying to find joy in what he is doing. Good for him.

One other thing the smartphone has done. It is no longer just big brother looking at us, but we are now looking at big brother. And it is so easy to post videos online now.

BTW, the smartphone will be killed off when we have Borg like implants.

Professional photographers do it every day for their clients. National Geographic did not pick the most artistic or stunning photographs for their articles. They picked the ones that helped tell the story.

Whether they admit it or not. Artists today who sculpt and paint owe a lot to photography. It freed them to explore whole new areas of expression. In my opinion the whole modern art movement owes it's very existence to photography. Interesting how photographers are now trying to imitate what the artists are doing.

Timur, Beautiful shot. Well done.

I have not been up that way in some time. Maybe it is time to check out the east side of the state again. That is a beautiful area.

Maybe he will get a job as a rampie for Buffalo Airways! Kilts at -40 while trying to get a DC3 prepped for takeoff would be epic. I wonder how the pipes sound with your lips frozen to the mouthpiece?

In other news my wife came home from grocery shopping with a pound of Smithifield Bacon!!! Still loves me after almost 42 years.

ignatowski Thanks for the information. I will check the file. A checksum would be a good idea. One weird thing is that the K3 zipped file shows has 15% compression ratio while the K1zipped file has a 54% compression ratio.

Interestingly enough I just fired up my older laptop running Windows 8.1 and it downloaded fine. On my newer laptop running Windows 10 it crashes at 6.7 mb completed. Will retry on my other laptop later.

I have been to Antietam a few times. The only problem I seem to have is with the viewing tower. They seem to have made it taller than remember from 25 years ago.

I cannot get the v1.5 firmware for my K1 to complete a download form the Pentax site at the moment. I keep getting a "failed" message. When I hit "retry" it then completes the download. Just not 100% certain that the file is not corrupted and do not want to brick my K1. Will try again later.

The K3 firmware download completed without a hitch twice.

Well the Old Erie Canal was rebuilt in the early 1900's as the New York Stat Barge Canal. It is still in operation today but with very little commercial and some recreational traffic. A few years ago the state renamed it the Erie Canal again. The state constitution decrees that the canal is to be maintained and operated in perpetuity. What this means is that everybody who pays for electricity in NY has a surcharge to cover the operating costs of the canal. Before that recent surcharge, the money came from tolls on the New York State Thruway. As near as I can tell, about 10 boats a year use it.

I saw the Freedom Train when it came to Rochester, NY in 1976. I think I may still have a few souvenirs from it somewhere.

Speaking of all things Norwegian, here is a photo of Trooper. Our Norsk skogkatt. According to SWMBO all that fuzz on his tummy and tail is a perpetual get out of jail free card.

True, but with a camera you have to nail the focus with a shotgun just being close is good enough. It is also a great stress reliever.

Kidney stones, impacted wisdom teeth, ear infections where your eardrums burst and injuries to certain naught parts come pretty close. Only no reward afterwards. At least after my eardrums burst and all the blood and puss drained out the pain was gone.

I had an aunt tell me that she had gas pains that were worse than any labor pain she ever felt. Did she inadvertently let out a sisterhood secret to me?

Fifty 12 gauge shotgun shells. I went out and shot some sporting clays this morning. Hit about 35 to 40 of the critters. I am blaming wind gusts for the misses. That's my story and I am sticking to it. Much more fun when I don't keep score.

Sloppy play just cost England big time. They have been letting Croatia hang around the goal way too much.

I think Australian Rules Football for the floppers. I think that an England v France World Cup Final would be great.

Oh oh. 1 - 1.

World Cup semi-final game on now. My favorite team in this cup has been Japan. No fake injuries and no flops. Just one tough team with excellent ball handling skills. It would be great to see them move onto the next step.

Some of these games make WWE wrestling look good. I am not against issuing a red card for egregious flops. Naymar's recent antics come to mind. I will never root for a team that he plays for. I think it is one of the main reasons that the game has not caught on as a main stream sport in the US. Whenever I talk to people about soccer, the flop is usually one of the first comments out of their mouths.

England up 1 - 0 over Croatia

Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you like the shot. When photographing scenery such as this, I think the scenery deserves most of the credit. I just captured what was already there. People have asked why the river is called the Yellowstone National Park. Now they know The colors are even more impressive at the gorge overlooks. When I was there this past May some of them were closed for repairs and upgrades and the remaining ones were more crowded as a result.. So I skipped that area this time around.

Your uncle must have some vivid memories of the night the earthquake struck. The waters in Lake Hebgen sloshed back and forth along the length of the lake for 11.5 hours after the quake struck. At first the water over topped the dam three or four times and eroded 4 feet off the top of it. Luckily the dam held or the disaster would have been much worse.
