Kai (DigitalRev TV) reviews the K-1 - NSFW

There really aren't any more buttons on the K-1 than on the Nikon D500 that he was gushing over in another video review. Kai is a fool and apparently quite pleased with himself for it.

I wonder if it needs a break in period. Hopefully the action improves with some use.

The field camera use-case argument for the chunky smart function dial is valid but I, for one, have never shot with gloves whereas just about every time I take my K-5 out I regularly glance at the EV bar on the top LCD between shots.

The third command dial will be great though. That addition I very much like. Having immediate control over all three exposure parameters is fantastic.

Not that I have a K-1 but that smart function dial taking over so much screen space seems to be the poorest of the new design features. ISO and exposure comp already have dedicated buttons and those are by far the most practical two settings you'd ever need to control from the new command dial. Would have preferred to have more info displayed on the LCD, particularly an EV bar, AF points, and AE meter.

Nice! The AF performance of the K-1 is shaping up to have as much appeal as the extra sensor real estate. And really happy to see how well many of the DAs are doing on the K-1.

Is the DA* 55's AF speed much improved on the K-1? Slow AF seems to be the most commonly cited drawback with this lens. Your shots look sharp and don't show CA. I'd like to think that the DA*55 and a DFA 100 macro would make a tidy pair of WR primes for a K-1 kit.

Not strictly a B&W sensor, and not available to the general public, but the 645Z IR model is definitely a unique and interesting camera. PENTAX 645Z IR | RICOH IMAGING

K-1 with FA31mm or Sigma A 35mm

No experience with the Sigma ART 35MM but really do love my FA 31 Limited. Even if Pentax updates the 31 with quick shift, WR, and silent AF, I won't be replacing my copy. Its IQ is so good and consistent plus the build and operation of it just feels right. Definitely my favorite lens. It's a lifetime keeper, for sure.

Not P-TTL but I've been very satisfied using the Paul C Buff CyberSync system. If you have any of their studio strobes, you can control all the settings directly from their Cyber Commander, which is extremely convenient both in studio and the field. Manual is just about the only way I use flash. The Commander even has a built-in light meter that is quite capable. A lot of of bang for the buck with their products, great customer service, and made in the good ol' US of A. I can't justify the sky high prices of Pocket Wizard triggers, Elinchrom et al strobes, or Sekonic meters. I feel l get just as good performance for much cheaper from PCB gear. I'm sure this will come across as an unsolicited endorsement but I truly am a fan.

Should add that I use the CyberSync Receiver Plus (battery) to trigger my Pentax AF540 as well as old Nikon hot shoe flashes.

That Sigma 200 f/2 patent link could mean healthy competition too if made available in K mount.

If this was meant to provide clarity, it officially does not.

Edit: With full reading comprehension in tact, all I can gather from this is that an unspecified “official” made a non-specific statement at an unspecified time and location.

Pentax K-1 (tentative) exhibited in Salon de la Photo from Paris

Quite true. I'm surprised more people don't want a functional aperture ring though, especially given it's long history and very practical nature. I'm also curious what the reactions were when the first lenses without aperture rings came out. Was it mostly negative, neutral, or even positive?

Looks like Pentax may have already addressed my desire to have instant control over all three exposure settings with that third wheel on the top right of the upcoming K-1. The new FF is an impressive, if not intimidating, looking camera. Might not be the K-1 but I do intend to eventually have a Pentax FF DSLR of my own.

---------- Post added 11-18-15 at 06:55 PM ----------

Yeah, I'm rather apprehensive about "by wire" controls. If done right though, it could allow for easy use of the aperture ring in other shooting modes beyond M and Av since it could always revert back to auto without having to be physically moved to the A position.

I figured as much. As long as it offers the same functionality, I'd be happy with it. Weather sealing is definitely nice to have but I would take advantage of a de-crippled mount much more often than shooting in rain or snow or by waterfalls or on a raft or whatever else might require WR/AW.

Haven't forgotten but definitely a fair point. Fuji has shown that weather sealing an aperture ring is possible but certainly there is a cost associated with it. Not sure what other WR lenses exist out there that are graced with an aperture ring.

Yes, this is very encouraging!

---------- Post added 11-17-15 at 01:12 PM ----------

That covers two exposure parameters. For simultaneous and seamless control over a third, being able to use the aperture ring sure would be sweet.

I'll take it! That's a much smaller quibble in my book.

For me, longing for a de-crippled K mount has nothing to do with legacy glass. It's about having immediate control of each of the exposure settings at your fingertips. I want that functionality for the FA Limiteds. You know, those beautiful little lenses with auto-focus and auto-exposure that Pentax continues to produce today with that funky thingamajig called an aperture ring. And even though that thingamajig was designed way back in the olden times, it turns out it's a great way to conveniently control exposure since your thumb and middle finger naturally cradle the lens right there anyway. How this basic feature for controlling exposure ever came to be considered antiquated is beyond me. I believe it to be just as beneficial as it ever was.

One of the revolutionary new features digital offered was on-the-fly changes to ISO. With this advancement came the possibility of having every one of the exposure parameters at the ready. You'd now be able to instantly control shutter speed and ISO from the e-dials while setting aperture from, of all places, the aperture ring. There's a problem though... That's not possible with a crippled mount.

If only there were a way for the camera body to know what f-stop the lens was set at. Wait, there is! Unfortunately, Pentax has thus far chosen not to implement such a solution. And while the green button is great, it's still fiddly compared to simply being able to twist the aperture ring.

I'm not that old and I'm not that old school but I still want a de-crippled K mount, goddammit! And it's not so I can skip on buying expensive new glass. I would love to see new lenses with aperture rings! I find shooting in manual mode to be the most engaging and gratifying way to do photography. M mode isn't just for manual lenses, folks! I'd manual focus more if my eyes were better but I'd shoot in M all the time if I could just use the aperture ring on my FA Limiteds with normal metering.

I'm going to be disappointed if the FA Limited re-issues don't sport an aperture ring. The omission or inclusion of an aperture ring on any new FA Limited may end up being the clearest indicator of Pentax's intentions for resurrecting, or perhaps reinventing, the step-down coupler.

Looks awesome! I'm really pleased to see all the manual and custom controls. Placement of things seems alright and I expect the functionality added by the new knobs and buttons will help make for a smooth shooting experience. The style is very much in keeping with higher end Pentax DSLRs, which I'm also happy to see.

I don't expect anything from this announcement to "forever change how photographers create their images". That's pure hyperbole.

HSS 645 LS lenses would be ground breaking for Pentax in that they'd complete a missing part of the MF equation. It's sort of the reverse of how we've had FF glass but no FF DSLR; we've had a MF DSLR but no high speed capable MF leaf shutter lenses from Pentax.

I have no reason to suspect that leaf shutter lenses are going to be any part of this announcement but I have a hard time not dismissing any argument that says it wouldn't be a big deal in the medium format world for Pentax to release new LS lenses.

LS and high speed sync may not be your cup of tea but it's a style I personally like and it's one that I see many pro photographers use, whether it be to help freeze action or kill ambient light. You're right that they aren't new tech but they could absolutely be a game changer in the MF market. The 645Z has already taken that market by storm and put Pentax in the spotlight in a very good way. A line of leaf shutter lenses that are high speed sync capable would definitely advance Pentax's position in MF.
