I would think you would want a lens to accurately (clinically) portray the scene or subject.....then there is processing. Someone explain "Pixie Dust" and how you can determine the "Pixie Dust" quality of a lens with a RAW file?

In your situation with over 100,000 photos that might pose a problem for you switching to any DAM besides what you are using in Lightroom. I am very opposed to Adobe's implementation. I'm not sure if there is any standardization in keywording among asset managers. I do believe I remember Lightroom recognizing my Zoner Keywords although that was several months ago.

I'm definitely not a professional and the way Adobe was trying to "manage" my photo folders making me learn their way of photo management really ticked me off, I dropped them like a hot potato. I'm perfectly happy storing my photos in folders sorted by date and being able to view them Zoner ZPS X based on date, keyword and location is plenty for me. Additionally, I believe DXO PhotoLab has the ability to sort and display photos based upon lens and camera data.....I just haven't used that feature yet.

The automated RAW processing features of PhotoLab are what attracted me.

Hi John,

I think its a great RAW developer and it does have ratings but no keywording right now. I do my Keywording in Zoner which has a great cataloging feature plus any JPEG editing I do in Zoner if I want to edit the JPEG from DXO. I manage my photo files with a simple date folder routine. Give the 30 day trial a go.

I looked at Luminar for Windows and like jatrax stated its not quite there with the windows application plus from what I can read Macphun's excellent noise reduction application Noiseless will not be a part of Luminar for windows. Looks like the price is pretty good for what you get. I still have a copy of the Beta application on my laptop.

I also tried a 30 day trial of Capture One 10 and decided to forego it, way too pricey for me at close to $300 plus it managed my photos like lightroom.....way too intrusive for me.

I also tried a 30 day trial of DXO PhotoLab and really liked it. There is no damn DAM like Lightroom's my way or the highway DAM. What I really like about PhotoLab is its "PRIME" noise reduction plus it incorporates NIK Upoint technology also. Pricing is a bit high but they are offering an introductory special of $149, at some point in November it will go back to $199. I decided to buy PhotoLab and have been working with the trial prior to my purchase.

I thought I'd pass this along. DXO is offering their New PhotoLab Elite Processing software for an introductory price of $149USD for a limited time. They have a 30 day trial of the full package. I downloaded the trial and used it for a few days and bought the software. If you are looking for an alternative to Lightroom its great and can even be used as a LR plugin.

K-3 and Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Lens Type problem

I discovered my problem with viewing the EXIF file, it was an older version of ExifTool that was accessed by ExifToolGUI so that problem is solved but I've got to find a solution to hack good old DXO PhotoLab into using a slightly different module for my go to lens. What I've found is that the DXO Pentax K-3 Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Module can be "tricked" into loading. It seems that DXO labs hasn't gotten off their butt to up grade their module to reflect the newer Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO HSM lens even though its been marketed for 3 yrs now. I'm not a good command line programmer at all so Phil Harvey of ExifTool is working with me to get the correct LensID into the EXIF file in the correct area.

The old raw converter used the adobe Camera Raw files and the converter allowed you to select the needed lens profile from a list.

K-3 and Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Lens Type problem

My K-3 reports my other Sigma Correctly which is s 70-300 and its reported as "Sigma Lens (3 255) in the maker notes section of the EXIF file which is correct. The 18-200 is reported as Unknown (8 33), 8 33 is the correct code but it seems to me that the camera has to play a roll in the EXIF writing because the lens is reporting the correct Lens data. The camera is not recognizing the code properly. I suspect it might be a camera firmware problem.

K-3 and Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Lens Type problem

This issue has just lately started to be a problem for me because I'm changing my Raw Processor and its only a problem with this one lens not any of my other lens. I use the Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM as my walk around lens because of its wide focal range and its quiet operation. What the problem is my K-3 with firmware 1.30 reports the lens type as Unknown (8 33) in the Maker Notes, Lens Type, Value section of the EXIF file. The processing software that I have started to use applies its lens correction module based on the Maker Notes, Lens Type, value data so with the proper data not being there it won't automatically apply the correct lens correction and it can't be manually applied other than doing a manual preset which I really don't want to do.

I suspect that for some reason my K-3 is not reporting the lens correctly although it reports my other Sigma correctly. If any of you K-3 shooters use the Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM with you K-3 do you mind checking the EXIF file Maker Notes to see if your K-3 is reporting the correct data to the Lens Type, Value section. I use ExifToolGUI to read the EXIF file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just want to find out if my problem is unique to my camera and what your K-3 is reporting with this particular lens. There is a solution for me and its to use ExifTool to write to the maker Notes the proper data when I find out what the proper syntax is.

Thanks

Well I have had mine since 2014 and have had no desire to go to any of the more recent models. I'll probably buy the K-3II replacement but won't stop using my trusty K-3!

I think you'll find the K-3 viewfinder quite nice it has .95x magnification with 100% coverage with a pentaprism rather than a pentamirror which will be much brighter. All the controls are easily accessed, the K-3 has dual programmable E-dials and many more features that are very desirable. Here is a feature comparison of the K-3 vs the D3200 Nikon D3200 vs Pentax K-3 Detailed Comparison . Pentax is a true enthusiast's camera the D3200 not even close.

Heather here is a link for the best explanation of how to use Topaz Denoise 6 I have found. The guy is concise.

You Tube

I hope this helps you, it has given me a much better understanding of Denoise 6 than any of the Topaz tutorials I have watched so far. He cautions against using the new camera presets in Denoise 6, Fyi there are no Pentax presets yet in Denoise 6.

Maybe a solution for congested cities but totally unworkable in much of America. With this solution you are relinquishing another freedom to the bureaucracy. It ain't gonna happen in your lifetime I can assure you!

Sounds as if you are on a tripod when this happens, if so, turn off shake reduction. If that doesn't solve the problem get another camera as the cost of repair will probably be too high or don't use or long exposures or mirror up.

It would be interesting to know exactly what percentage of smartphone "sales" are attributed to actual purchases by individuals or come as part of a package when one subscribes to a service. Even the most basic of subscription service provides smart phones nowadays.

Just curious, why have you not updated to ver. 1.30 of the firmware? If I read correctly you do own a K-3 not a K-3II.

Well I upgraded from a K-50 also, but it was to a K-3 in 2014 and now I'm sitting on go for a K-3ii replacement. It will probably be my last DSLR. so come on Pentax get a move on.

The current crop of APS-C sensor Pentax systems are lacking in some area that is important to me so none appeal to me. About half of my lens are APS-C only lens and I don't want to buy a K-1 and lose the use of some of my lens (I know there is a crop mode in the K-1).

Pentax SMC DA 50mm f/1.8 DA on a K3

Have you checked the camera with other lens? If they work correctly, then you may want to gently clean the lens contacts and also make sure the lens is seated properly. give this a try before anything related to a camera reset. If the lens was a used purchase it might be cheaper to send it back for a refund since the DA 50 f1.8 is a relatively inexpensive lens new.

Ivan, my friend, I think the poster was referring to the K-3 when he mentioned soft pictures. You need to go back and read the post again. Here is the text that was written:

"I resisted the lure of the K3 for a long time because of all the soft pictures posted ...
But recently came across a good deal , so bit the bullet . ( Hopefully playing with a K3 soon )"

Read more at: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/241198-k3-sample-shots-po...#ixzz4szLdTsze

My point was that for the K-3 to really shine you need good glass.
