K-1 MK2 - Unhappy with results at moderate ISO settings

Handy test chart shots and full-size JPEGs. Starting from ISO 3200, which is very useful.

On these shots, seems like Accelerator unit is working well, for noise, colour saturation and detail up until about ISO 51200.

On the subject of long-exposure sensor performance ...

The Sensor Noise DB. – Brendan Davey Photography

The K-1 was already doing very well in that area. Lowest noise FF sensor in his 300 sec exposure tests. So if the K-1 II is producing improvements there, that would be impressive.

Note that Ricoh say the accelerator chip improves detail ( ie resolution), colour rendition AND reduces noise:

QuoteQuote:

[K1 II] incorporates an original accelerator unit, which efficiently processes image signals output by the image sensor before sending them to the imaging engine. This process upgrades both image resolution and color reproduction in a high-sensitivity range, while drastically reducing noise compared to the PENTAX K-1. .

High-resolution design | PENTAX K-1 Mark II | RICOH IMAGING

All of those improvements in colour and resolution might simply be a by-product of efficient noise reduction, but it might also be a hint that more than just NR may be going on inside the Accelerator chip.

DCU 5.8.1 and IMAGE Transmitter 2 (2.4.0) update

I do have a small one installed on my i7 860 PC, but unlike other apps - eg Lightroom - unfortunately DCU doesn't let you specify where you want to store the program data files. So I can't run the program off one drive and read/write it's data files off the SSD. In LR you can run the catalog and the stored image previews off the SSD, which does seem to help LR performance.

Anyway, with DCU, the bottleneck seems to be a software one or a CPU one - RAM is never anywhere near exhausted, even with just 8GB of RAM, yet often the CPU is spiking for even trivial slider adjustments to an image. I'll update my NVidia display drivers. Maybe that might help.

I think the following diagram illustrates a common view of how RAW images work: after the image data off the sensor gets some basic analog/digital conversion, the RAW file is available for use ahead of any work of the camera image processer. But that is a misreading of the whole processing pipeline.

In reality even at the very early analog/digital stage, there's a lot of data processing, filtering, NR and other tweaking likely to be happening well before the image data is handed off to the camera image processor, as illustrated by this simple Sony diagram of Exmor sensors (as used in the K-1).

It will never be possible to have a 'PRIME image processor chip' on/off, or an 'Accelerator chip' on/off, switch in the firmware, I suspect

Nice tech, but rather worrying too.

Applied to CCTV, speed cameras etc and suddenly the line starts to get seriously blurred between what a real image is when machine imagery is used for prosecution.

Sunglasses and hoodies won't mask anyone anymore either. System will just supply an AI generated face for you and the court.

K-1ii DNGs won't open in DxO Photolab

Hopefully they will manage to release a K-1 II update before they totally crash and burn.

I bet their current woes mostly relate to their silly DxO One phone camera dongle. Must have been very resource-draining and expensive to bring to market.

K1 green mode (full auto) and semi-auto

Green mode is indeed where the 'deep learning' magic of the K-1 is supposed to come into play:

This RICOH-original technology is available during viewfinder shooting when the exposure mode is set to Scene Analyze Auto and the Custom Image mode is set to Auto Select.

Competition - eg Sony is doing it too, as are others: from the DPR's recent A7 III review:

QuoteQuote:

The updated sensor works in tandem with a new 'front-end LSI' (essentially an additional processor) to capture up to 10 frames per second with full autofocus and autoexposure, as well as allowing for oversampled (read: very detailed) 4K/24p capture

Despite Ricoh claiming the Accelerator chip is their own invention, I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually sourced from someone else like Socionext or even Sony.

I had a look and share this view.

But more testing is needed to map all of the contributions the Accelerator chip makes to camera RAWs.

I wish Bill Claff had been able to complete his testing on the K-P, but that effort seems to have died.

DCU 5.8.1 and IMAGE Transmitter 2 (2.4.0) update

I've been using DCU since my K200D days. It's always been amongst the slowest apps on my PC. But I will re-examine my setup to see what the potential bottlenecks may be, since the K-1 features in DCU are important to have.

I use DNG on Win10/64 when shooting Pentax. However I suspect DNG isn't the issue.

Other Silkypix apps, like Capture NX-D, generally run OK.

Melbourne's rip-off of Paris' Nuit Blanc rip-off of St Petersburg's white nights celebrations. :)

Up in St Petersburg, for a few weeks you really do get white nights, with close to 24 hour daylight. A very dis-orienting time to be there as a tourist too. Throws your body clock way out.

For this kind of RAW pixel-peepery, people should begin their work by using Iliah Berg's FastRawViewer:

Amongst it's other features, it has a lot of tools to let people critically appraise RAW's. In this area, it is far more capable than IrfanView

Expensive! And the touch screen capability seems pretty pointless for a camera monitor, unless your camera has drivers for their multi-touch. Asus, AOC and others have some portable, standard 15 inch PC monitors with HDMI input that would do the job for less, I think.

Ricoh needs to include a warning about this in the K-1 II manual. People need to be aware of the peril.

Not the Metz 52 AF-1. Or the Yongnuo 585-EX.

But I remember seeing somewhere reports that the AF assist light has been known to work on the K-1 with some flashes when the camera is set to crop-mode. Figuring out Pentax flash protocols is apparently harder than it seems.

It would be useful to provide some official before/after image examples of the K-1 II/ K-1 with/without the Accelerator Unit. At the moment they don't provide much info on that, short of this little video:

Youtu.be

The web K-1 II web page says almost the exact same as Ricoh said in the IR interview:

High-resolution design | PENTAX K-1 Mark II | RICOH IMAGING

After reading this, I'm particularly interested in learning what the Accelerator chip 'effect curve' looks like when the performance of the chip is measured along the ISO scale. Perhaps it does nothing up to ISO 400, then progressively starts to act as ISO increases.

It's just like what you see when using LiveView on-camera, basically.

Initially you see the camera info screen. To see anything more, select Live View on the camera and then you can start shooting. You can also playback images stored on the camera, of course.

Try your camera HDMI output on your TV to see what is possible and how it might look.

Now that the K-1 II has it, and thus has entered into the world of professional use, and what this whole thread demonstrates, is that Ricoh needs to release a white paper on the Accelerator chip - what it's purpose is, how it works etc.

They have provided some notes on the subject on the K-1 Special Site, but they could go further.

Challengers | PENTAX K-1 Special site | RICOH IMAGING

Interesting that video is mentioned as one place where the improvements to noise performance may be felt.

Ricoh releases API and SDK for RICOH THETA Plug-in Partner Program

You could ask Microsoft the same thing.

The answer depends on the vision Ricoh has for the future of their platform, and the opportunities there may be for them to potentially expand it's value, defend themselves from competitors etc.

Sadly not.
If you are looking around for a cable that will fit, note that the K-1 has a 'Type D micro' HDMI socket.

You could do stuff like connect a HDMI monitor to simply display your shots on a big screen straight out of camera, or if you use the K-1, run a few metres of USB cable from camera to laptop and run Lightroom and use either the Pentax tethering plugin for Lightroom or buy the Pentax Image Tramsmitter 2 tethering software.

I'd also perhaps re-try all the WiFi tethering options - there are about 3 WiFi apps now for that - Image Sync,as you know, but also PentaxPhotosync and another one (the name of which escapes me atm). WiFi tethering will always be slower than cabled tethering, but it could still be useful.
