I like the HD DA 21 on the K-5II for street photography as it gives similar FOV to 31 mm on FF. The HD DA 15 is noticeably wider and offers a different perspective as an ultra wide. I also agree with Clackers that the 40mm pancake rocks for street photography as well. The HD DA 40 is tack sharp across the entire frame and those rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at f/2.8. Small and compact works best for street.

AF Speed - DA* 200 versus DA* 60-250

Thanks for your thoughts so far. I'm in the process of deciding which new lens to buy and want working silent AF. It doesn't have to be lightning fast but should not be lethargically slow. The DA* 200 and DA* 60-250 are within my budget and will fit in my Think Tank Perception Pro backpack. The D FA 70-200 is outside my budget.

The lens will mostly be used outside in good light but often rainy & snowy conditions. The average rainfall here is 1,191 mm and the average snowfall is 322 cm. The need for weather sealing rules out a new Tamron or a second hand Sigma 70-200. A 200 prime will work as will the 60-250. I'm not worried about zooming or the extra reach of the 60-250 (have the HD DA 1.4X TC). If one performs better for AF that would tip the scale.

Thanks in advance for your input.

AF Speed - DA* 200 versus DA* 60-250

Hi, does anyone have both of these lenses. How much of a difference in AF speed is there between the two shoot outside in reasonable light? The detailed review here indicates the DA* 200 has 0.95 seconds in latency before the SDM motor kicks in. Thoughts?

Totally agree.

The DA Limited's are addictive. On a humble K-5II - I started with the 21 followed by the 40. Then it was the 70 followed by the 15. Although I bought the D FA 100 WR - I still ended up getting the 35 Limited. The drawing style of all is superb with enough uniqueness to make you appreciate every individual one. I prefer DA Limited neutral colour rendering over an FA as I can finish to my taste in post.

The very slight limitation on aperture size made me learn how to use flash better. Now I often shoot with multiple radio triggered strobes in dim light. Looking forward to a K-3II replacement - if a KP can be put into a K3 body with a larger buffer I'm going to pre-order as it will be perfect for the Limited's.

I usually carry a bag of primes (HD DA Limited’s) to shoot with on my K-5II. The 70 is my favourite portrait lens outside or in a space large enough. The 40 is pretty special indoors.

This past weekend at an indoor shoot I needed flexibility and didn’t have time for lens changes. On Sunday I broke down and ordered a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 zoom. The reviews here show it is a touch sharper than the Pentax DA* 16-50 f/2.8 and is much cheaper while having a silent AF motor. Check it out Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

The HD DA 70 is pretty terrific too...

So is the HD DA 40...

Then there is the DA* 50-135....

The DA Limited’s are a trade off. Compact size, light weight, exceptional build quality, beautiful manual focus handling - at the expense of a half stop or a full stop of light. The aperture size is still aligned to be larger than most of what would be needed to capture an image with a specific focal length. They aren’t slow. Even the DA 21 is f/3.2 wide open (not far off f/2.8). The DA 15 is the slowest of the bunch at f/4 but would normally be used around f/8. These lenses are the Spartan warriors of the digital lens world.

Reversing Hoya Filters...? (DA 21)

With my set of HD DA Limitedís - I only have one good 49mm polarizer and one good 49mm variable ND. Both filters work on The DA Limitedís plus the D FA 100 Macro WR. All of these lenses have a 49mm filter thread. On the 21 Limited once you remove the bayonet hood, the lens itself has 49mm thread. Put your polarizer on there and a 49mm pinch cap. Problem solved.

I answered left eye that's how I shoot landscape or studio. For sports and street, I force myself to shoot with my right eye while keeping both open for greater situational visibility.

I’m actually looking for a longer lens. The DA* 200 or DA* 300 are where my head was prior to this thread. The 60-250 seemed to be an excellent choice as well. I just picked up a HD DA 1.4X TC. Any one of those 3 lenses would have worked for shooting minke, humpback and killer whales, eagles, cormorants, puffins, bears, caribou, moose, and more. I dread the current DA* SDM AF speed. Having shot with both the DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135 it’s the AF speed that disappoints. The promise of more reliable AF motors may be reason enough to wait.

DA* upgrade this fall ?

In 2014 I resigned myself to thinking that Pentax would never offer a full frame dslr. I upgraded to a K-5II that was on clearance and threw my cash at 5 HD DA Limited lenses. It was a big investment and I saved for a long time. I could have easily bought a K-1 and D FA 28-105 if these were available. Now I’m committed to APS-C. Today I’m in a position to buy one lens that is between $1,000 and $1,400. Whatever I choose I’ll have to live with it for a long time. So yes the choice is complicated because if I wait - I’ll miss a lot of shooting opportunities during the short summer on this sub artic tundra. If I don’t wait and a better lens is released that is superior to lethargic Sudden Death Motor AF - I’ll regret it. I still have kids to put through school so my investments in photography must be smart investments.

There are several great choices out there. I narrowed my choice down to the DA 14 and HD DA 15 - you won't go wrong with either. Ultimately I chose the HD DA 15 for its compact size, light weight and exceptional performance. There's never an excuse not to carry the 15 Limited because it takes up so little room in a camera bag!

The tripod I use is a Vanguard Alta Pro 264AB 100. The SBH 100 ball head from the Vanguard tripod fits on the Monopodand works exceptionally well. Being able to use the one ball head on both was a deciding factor for me. Any of the Vanguard ball heads will work.

Anti-Shake (SR) has been around since the Minolta 7D (2004) and 5D series in 2005. Sony and Minolta had partnered on a number of cameras before Minolta bailed out of the camera business. The A100 (2006) was simply Minolta in Sony clothing. I began working for Minolta not long before the camera division sale to Sony (bad timing). Although each Sony has a strong Minolta lineage, Sony reshaped their offerings in 2010 with Pellicle mirrors (translucent) in DSLR and mirrorless E-mount cameras. Despite my own connection to Minolta technology, I believe Pentax has done a better job with stabilization.

I coach and shoot Canadian football. Even the lethargic AF on the DA* 50-135 can capture decent shots from the sidelines.

Why invest in a K-1 to undermine it with a cheap battery? Kind of like buying a new Porsche but getting the cheapest tires at Wal-Mart...not going to deliver optimal performance.

Most here will identify with your journey. Many of us who have cut their teeth on Pentax have tried other brands. In 2014 I sold off all my Pentax gear to decide what brand to shoot for the next decade. Rented Canon gear for a weekend, did the same with Nikon. Was about to invest in Nikon but stumbled on an excellent deal for a K-5II, rolled the dice on a HD DA 21 to go with it and was hooked. While the K-5II is an exceptional piece of kit; the HD DA Limitedís - their sharpness and drawing style are what keep me in the Pentax system.

Welcome back to the dark side!

Do any Pentaxians shooting APS-C have either of these backpacks? If so how well does your gear fit into the bag? I am considering purchasing one but the only Canadian Camera store I can order through is Henry's - special order non refundable. Makes me want to be sure about the purchase but also makes me want to do business elsewhere.

I would that suggest ideal trios would be 15/35/70 or 21/40/70 although I usually carry 15/21/40/70 quad because theyíre small and donít take up a lot of space.
