If you are using APS-C the DA35LTD Macro has a $100 rebate now. US$396 sounds like a steal for such a lens.

I don't have one of these bellows but it does look like there is enough room to move the bellows on the rail as far away as possible from the end the slide copier attaches with enough room to attach the camera and lens directly to the slide copier. This would be the simplest solution.

I do have the Nikon copier which works very well. I have used a light box and copy stand for larger format film. The K1MKII using pixel shift creates excellent files easier than using a scanner both on time and quality of results.

Lloyd_Christmas you may be able to just attach the slider duplicator to a 50mm macro lens then attach the lens to the camera without using the bellows. The duplicator seems to have it's own small bellows this should be enough to get the right distance. With a 100mm macro you made need extension tubes.

Nikon makes this $60 slide copier. With the A-series 50mm Macro since it is not 1:1 you need to use extension tubes.

When Ricoh/Pentax started teasing the K3III the first thing they highlighted was the viewfinder was the same size as the K-1. This gave hope for me that the K-3II APS-C replacement would be full frame. The K-3III viewfinder covers full frame. The physical size of the K-3 is perfect for FF all day use. One major covet for the K-1 is size. Excellent files but not very nibble in use. Ricoh/Pentax needs to get the back end of things in order. The UHS-II bus on the K-3III only runs at UHS-I 109 speeds. Like the K-1 the K-3III doesn't have a buffer problem or processor problem they have half speed UHS bus problem that causes the camera to spend to much time writing files to the SD flash storage.

The OP on whether to wait for the next Pentax FF don't bother waiting especially if you are still using a K20 just get a K-1. One thing they are similar in size more similar than K-7,5,3. There is no timeline for a K-1 replacement. The K-1 file blows away the K20 files. There are a ton more features in the K-1 over the K20 pixel shift astrotracer etc etc.

DPReview is pretty clear in saying "we were unable to produce a sharp image using the mechanical shutter at these particular settings due to shutter shock." You can interpret that to mean what ever you want but it sounds awfully definitive they are blaming the camera for having a mechanical shutter shock problem.

Like I said my personal experience taking sample images at B&H there is no mechanical "shutter shock" problem at any shutter speeds I tested.

DPReview has made the claim the K-3III has a mechanical shutter shock problem at slow shutter speeds making the K-3III incapable of sharp images at slow speeds. This is completely untrue. DPReview took down the DNG files but haven't taken down their false statements the K-3III has a mechanical shutter shock problem at slow shutter speeds which is a fabricated narrative made up by DPReview which does not really exist.

DPReview has taken down the DNG files for the K-3III in their studio scene comparison tool. I have sample images from a K-3III at B&H with firmware V 1.00 which show no signs of the blurry slow shutter speed shake DRPreview claimed they could only produce. Not sure how the firmware could fix something that did not really exist. At any rate DPReview removed the DNG files from their system which is the basis for their claim the K-3III has a slow shutter speed shake problem.

Ricoh GR IIIx announced. new 26.1 mm lens (40mm eq)

It doesn't matter were I turn the wheel on my GRIII it skips forward and back adjusting ISO, Manual focus etc. The wheel was always a little touchy but now it is just malfunctioning. The GR needs less of these wheels, adjustment levers, and buttons not more. The GRIII is even worse than the GRII at randomly changing settings from aperture/shutter settings, manual focus to drive modes.

My vision for the 40mm focal length compact was Ricoh/Pentax have the 40mm be Pentax branded brother to GR. Same GR compact philosophy but stepped up WR even FF at 40mm instead of APS-C. These cameras need to shift to Mirco-SD to make room for bigger batteries.

The electronics/electrical systems of the GRIII is just messed up. What happens when you use the GA-1 adaptor and power off modes is near fire hazard the camera heats up so much while draining a full battery in 5 minutes.

Here is a GRIII question I have the display set to off while in use. When the GRIII powers on there is a short splash screen showing FN ISO Drive Mode Still/Movie settings. Is there any way to show other things in this start up splash screen? Like the battery level the single most important piece of information you need to know when powering on especially since the GRIII battery life is so bad. I need to activate the screen after start up to see battery life something I am trying to avoid to save battery life.

A second question when using the "new" auto-ISO function the wheel becomes set to control exposure compensation. I can not find where to turn this off when using auto-ISO. When using auto-ISO exposure compensation is randomly changing all the time as the wheel is active to control it at the slightest touch.

Why is Flash mode set permanently on with no way to turn it off? The only options is Flash on or Flash On+Red-eye so basically the hot shoe is always active.

Hopefully some of these issues will be addressed with the GRIIIx.

This camera is long over due. Unfortunately it comes with all the foibles of the GRIII. The wheel has got to go. It is rendering my GRIII near useless as it is skipping jumping not precious. The GRIII has all kinds of problems not yet fixed like the GA-1 adapter malfunctioning when power save modes are on causing the camera to drain the battery in minutes while heating up the camera at the same time. Same slow UHS-I bus and poor battery life.

I don't mind Ricoh using the same old sensor from the GRIII but keeping all things equal sans the focal length the GRIIIx inherits all the same failings

An alternative to using a scanner to copy slides at least is using a simple Slide adapter like the Nikon ES-1 for $20. I have successfully used this adapter on the K-1 with the Pentax A-Series 50mm 2.8 Macro using a 49 to 52 step up ring to attach the adapter to the lens then ~30mm in extension tubes to bring the 1:2 of the lens to focus closer to 1:1. Works beautifully. With pixel-shift I don't think a scanner even a $10,000 scanner is going to do a better job. I find little to no adjustments are necessary.

Even only doing one slide at a time the results and ease of capture makes the experience less frustrating than having to set up a scanner to get proper color etc. I don't think I will ever use a scanner other than doing low res batch scans for review to choose those for K-1 pixel shift copying. Kodakchrome slides look top notch.

Pentax actually demonstrated a film copy stand/adapter several years ago. I don't know if it ever went into production. Ricoh wanted some outrageous price like 1,000 Euros. It did 120 film 35mm film and slides etc. The $20 Nikon ES-1 works equally as well for 35mm slides.

BigMackCam nothing DPR is baking into the files is pretty minor. In the other closed thread you were confused in that I posted image examples of the extremes DPR is pushing the files in making them look worse. Adjusting exposure white balance both temperature and tint are not adjustments to be made with no skills required. That is clear in the baked files DPR generates from ACR.

Here are JPG's generated from DPR's ISO 800 DNG for the K-3III. The first is simply a JPG generated from opening the DNG in ACR saving the file with the DPR baked in Image Settings the file opens with. The second file I set the DNG file back to the Camera Raw Defaults how the K-3III captured the image. I turned off the default ACR Detail and Noise settings same as DPR does. I also turned down the ACR Saturation setting to -20.

It is clear which image looks better. The color of the Fab Four patch looks like a neon sign in the DPR image. Adjusting the Saturation the Fab Four patch looks like a believable object. The print of the people in the DPR image the gradation and tonal values are basically 0-5 the CRD with -20 Saturation is more like 0-10 in value. Much richer. The baked in settings DPR uses the file is unprintable. In the past a Printer would refuse such a file as the color blooming is so bad for printing. Today's standards a major photography website like DPR can use such files to claim lose of details which is the next stage in DPR's K-3III review.

There's no argument whether the ISO 100 DPR K-3III files are fuzzy blurry not sharp. You don't need any special or different software to see that other than ACR. DPR is using ACR. The files are fuzzy at point of capture it has nothing to do with the software to view them.

Has anyone tried testing only one card at a time in Slot 1 (UHS II) leaving Slot 2 empty? Possibly with both slots being used the bus defaults to the UHS I 109 speeds.

K3-3 wasted space around rear LCD monitor - why?

Spock as Kunzite noted the K-3III LCD is similar to the GRIII. When the GRIII was announced it was hard to tell at first the size of the active LCD since the overall size is much larger. My impression with the GRIII the size of the overall LCD is the size we will see in some future more energy efficient OLED screen that will not deplete the battery as fast as an LCD screen of that size will.

OLED will bring a lot of benefits especially for fixed screens since OLED is easier to view at an angle. Like your phone the screen can go to the edge without a border. If the rear OLED screen has a rounded edge would eliminate the need for a DSLR top plate LCD as the data could be more easily displayed along the edge of the OLED than having to look at the top plate LCD.

stevebrot I wasn't questioning or slighting your methods so there isn't any thing to misjudge. It's DPR's methods that are being questioned. I don't see how the ISO 100 & 200 DNG files DPR posted are worth any analysis they are so blurry. What's the point when it is so unclear why? Especially when DPR acknowledges they do have ISO 100 & 200 files without the blurry problem extracted from a Pixel-Shift image. They could have shot at a speed slow or fast enough to get a sharp image then adjusted the exposure using ACR. They are changing the exposure for the files anyway.

DPR has comparison images of the sharp and blurry ISO 100 files with links to the files which are only crops. It is clear one is sharp the other is blurry. Strangely those two comparison images have the same file number IMG0481-01 the blurry image and IMG0481-02 the sharp image. This actually means the files they posted for comparison are the same file. One can not be mechanical shutter and the other Electronic Shutter with the same file number. I just noticed when taking a second look at what DPR posted. That type of numbering the _01, _02 at the end of the file number happens when saving multiple versions of the same file in ACR.

DPR has a habit for this kind of stuff. When DPR did the K-1MKII comparison against the D850 and A7III the lighting was so poorly done the purple fringing it caused made any real comparison useless. All three cameras it is evident. All the high contrast white and black transitions have either purple or green fringing. The print of the people next to the Fab Four the purple fringing is so bad across it you can see Newton's Rings. In that comparison DPR claimed the K-1MKII Accelerator Unit was removing micro detail by focusing in on the small black white and grey lettering which is high contrast where purple fringing happens as evidence denoising was causing the loss of micro detail.

The lighting used for the K-3III there still is the same overall purple fringing happening across the entire picture plan it's just less evident but is easily seen along the high contrast white and black areas of the background and targets. It really causes a visual hum for the entire image which is part of the color blooming. Pushing back the Saturation in ACR cleans this up in the files I have downloaded but can not completely make it go away.

Steve I don't know what file you are showing. Is this the blurry ISO 100 or 200 file? Those files are useless for any serious scrutiny. I don't have any explanation why the ISO 100 and 200 files are so blurry.

For all the DNG files DPR is turning off the ACR default Detail and Color Noise settings which makes their K-3III JPG images soft. It will make a TIFF file look just as soft. It's not a mystery why the DPR JPG files are soft it is why they do it in the first place. They do this for the other brands which make their images look soft as well but DPR does not upload the other brands RAW files with these applied Image Settings baked in they only do this with the Pentax DNG files they upload.

Sadly DPR's Studio Comparison Scene Tool should be that equal footing. DPR just doesn't use it that way. They are picking and choosing DPR standards to apply to each brand to fit their narrative instead of letting the files speak for themselves. Which anyone can do since DPR post's the files for download. I did.

So true mtkeller. DPR could have underexposed the ISO 100 and 200 images at a fast enough shutter speed then just adjusted in ACR. That is what they are doing to the files anyway. In ACR they adjust both exposure and white balance both the temperature and tint. What is the difference if they adjust the exposure by 2/3rd stop or 1.5. My years of reading DPR I don't think anyone there is professional enough to be adjusting the white balance temperature and tint.

I appreciate DPR posting RAW files for download for all the makers. It becomes a crux for them when they make statements that can be easily refuted by just downloading the files for yourself to take a look. When I first saw the DPR baked versions of the K-3III files I said these images can not be this bad. Downloading the RAW files I could see for myself they were very excellent. Better than the K-3III peers using the same sensor.

DPR is up front in the sense they do indicate they imbed a custom baked Pentax ACR profile. They only indicate this in the Info Tab for Pentax cameras and only the Pentax camera DNG files DPR uploads are saved with these Image Settings. All the other brands the files are uploaded set to how the file came out of the camera in ACR they open in Camera Raw default. The argument that DPR must do this as in the case of the K-3III for ACR because there is no profile yet from Adobe for the K-3III is really a mute lie.

The purpose to shooting DNG is that Adobe ACR will always be able to properly handle the file regardless if there is a "camera" profile or not from Adobe as those profiles are really so ACR can read the manufactures RAW fill prefix NEF RAF CR2 CR3 etc. DPR isn't shooting in Pentax PEF so there is no need to have a baked DPR imbedded profile for the Pentax DNG files.

DPR is doing a lot to the files by adjusting the exposure and white balance. They lift a whole layer of micro detail by doing this which makes the JPG files they posted look so terrible. Only one adjustment is really needed in ACR. There is color blooming happening so just adjusting the Saturation back to -10 or so controls this nicely without lifting out any detail. DPR's exposure and white balance adjustments only make the color blooming worse while also lifting out micro detail.

In DCU5 the info shown there for the DPR K-3III DNG files indicates DPR had both Lateral Chromatic Aberration Correction and Diffraction Correction set to On. Plus High-ISO Noise Reduction set to Auto. All three of these settings are doing something to the files whether these effects show up in JPG files only or if the DNG files have these settings imbedded as well I have no clue. Personally I never have those settings turned on.

DPR could have just posted the ISO 100 and 200 files extracted from the Pixel-Shift images instead of posting the blurry images. The blurry images are pointless for any serious evaluation which reflects on their standards. The point of DPR's Comparison scene is to try to keep things equal. DPR doesn't do this by then adjusting the files with special baked in profile settings that make the files look worse.

The K-3III files DPR posted are also very askew tilting down to the left. They are way off compared to the other cameras. Which also effects they way they look especially when zoomed in 200% compared to images properly squared.

B&H Photo in Manhattan has the K-3III in store now both Black and Silver for handling. They had no lens on them so I did not get to see the viewfinder. Excellent ergonomics. Compact size.

Pl Jensen can you clarify that it is when the self-timer is used at these shutter speeds ~1/40th to 1/125th the images are blurred. Or is it a combination of the self-timer and having Horizon Correction on?

On a tripod at these slower shutter speeds you can achieve sharp images by simply pressing the shutter button instead of using the self timer. Am I understanding that correctly?

Here are the official SD Card Organization developers standard overview to the bus speed transfer rates for all the bus interfaces.

UHS II has headroom for 156mbs Full duplex i.e. both upstream and downstream data transfers at the same time or Half duplex of 312mbs in one direction at a time. So at the very least the K-3III's UHS-II slot 1 there should be 156mbs of room with 312mbs optimal.

The settings fraudulently baked in are those DPR is using to remove a layer of detail in ACR. I can not make it any clearer than that. I am not doing any tricks here all I am doing is opening DPR's files then turning off the baked in ACR settings they applied. Here are all the ISO 800 files from the D500 with Camera Raw Defaults, the K-3III baked ACR JPG they have for download, the Fuji X-T4 Camera Raw default then finally the K-3III DNG set back to Camera Raw Defaults which turns off the baked in DPR ACR settings:

DPR is putting JPG files for Pentax into their comparison tool they bake with ACR to remove detail.

What is there to be confused about BigMackCam? The fraud is that DPR is baking in ACR settings that remove detail from Pentax brand cameras while claiming Pentax cameras have baked in detail removing noise reduction. Get it? It's not what I am saying it is clearly what DPR's own DNG files are showing. The beauty of RAW files you can reset the file back to Camera Raw Default i.e. what the camera originally captured in the file. When you do that reset the file to Camera Raw Defaults with all the Pentax DNG files at DPR turning off the baked in Image Settings applied by DPR you find a whole lot of detail restored to the image. Like I said as far as I can tell it is only Pentax brand they apply special embedded ACR profiles that bakes in the removal of details.

The K-1 ISO 100 Pixel Shift images are a good example. The first is DPR's baked in ACR detail removal. The second image is the file set back to Camera RAW Default:

The K-1 Pixel Shift image of the DPR Comparison Scene is a good reference point to see what it really looks like as to how each manufacturer guesses to what it looks like. The scene of the people and the Fab Four patch demonstrate this well. The cross hatching detail in the scene of the people only really shows up using Pixel shift. The figure on the left edge with the white apron there is fine cross hatching present clearly visible in the K-1 Camera Raw Default image. Without Pixel Shift this fine detail does not show up. But you can see how DPR's baked in K-1 ACR Image Settings lift out all those details visible in the Camera RAW Default image. All I am doing is turning off the baked in settings DPR is applying in ACR which reveals all kinds of detail DPR removed.

DPR has been doing this to Pentax brand camera files for more than 5 years.
