Pentax Si - was it ever produced?

Actually no one has made the digital camera a lot of people would use. It needs to be a digital K1000. It needs physical knobs for aperture, shutter, ISO, af/mf switch. It also needs a real viewfinder either optical or EVF. Simple but not too simple. Fuji may be getting closer to this than most. Look at their sales/profit.

It could be K APS-c size or perhaps smaller. Q size might work if a liitle size increase was allowed for EVF.

Doubt we have seen the end of Pentax top of the line APS-c. Even FF pushing Nikon finally gave in and made the D500. It is one of their best selling, beyond entry level, cameras. Pentax has supported the crop sensor far more than Nikon.

Cool addition 2old4toys. A red dot makes a 300/Q combo so much nicer to use. The pistol red dots would probably also work well. Haven't tried one.

My Xtend-A-Sight also has some slop in the hotshoe. I have to align it every time it is attached to the hotshoe. I just center something on the lcd and twist red dot to match.

Hope you post some tele shots.

Losing Date, Camera Reset??

First, welcome to the Q family and forum.

Second, glad the battery pumping worked for your Q10. It also worked for my original Q. Now instead of ~10 seconds I have over 5 minutes to change the battery.

Third, think you are the first person to report date & time forgetfulness on a Q-S1 body. Bummer. We were hoping the Q-S1 had improved circuitry and this was cured.

No idea why pumping the battery works. Perhaps there is more than 1 cause of date time forgetfulness? Battery pumping may "clean" a poor internal power connection? But if the battery or cap is bad better connections won't fix the problem.
Thanks,

Welcome to the Q and this forum Gwailo Ang Mo. Excellent first fisheye image. You have it rock n rollin. You will love the fisheye. The Q are great cameras and a lot of fun. People get more creative when using a Q. Do you have other lenses in addition to the FE? You should consider entering a shot in the Point and Shoot Contest. See signature below.

Bluefoam did you try the battery pumping fix in the other thread? It seems to have fixed my original Q. I used to have 10 seconds to swap batteries without losing info. After battery pumping, it lasted 5 min! It has been so long since trying this with the Q something else might have changed. Doesn't hurt to try.

True, the red dot isn't really a scope. Thinking of mounting a real scope on the Q. Why? Because often times young eagles will be in the bottom of the nest and not visible. A good high power scope would allow watching the nest without wasting the Q's tiny battery. I also had the original Q temp gauge come on multiple times on a hot June day. Should be able to mount both a scope and red dot on the Q. Doubt I will pop for a pentax scope.
Thanks,
barondla

It is for people photographing with large telephoto lenses. An adapter that fits a camera hotshoe and has Weaver rails to allow the attachment of a red dot scope.

Many photographers use these for birds in flight. You can see a wider field than the camera and find the subject quicker. It also helps find still subjects at very high magnification with very narrow field of view. This is where the Q comes in. I would never be without a finder when using the Q with a 300mm or longer lens.
Thanks,
barondla

Apparently I spoke too soon. One of the Wasabi that fits the Sigma DP1 has gone bad. It started swelling in the camera and was a little difficult to remove. Battery is over 3 years old.

Pentax should try making a mirrorless KP with K mount and EVF. It is a very inexpensive experiment vs designing a completely new system around a new lens mount. Think a lot of people would buy it. Some would be unhappy with this choice. What else is new? No camera is going to please everyone.

If this 2nd APS-c mirrorless experient fails, Pentax could then decide if they want to invest in a new lens mount and system. They would also learn from the 2nd APS-c mirrorless.

Long reach Q shooters - what type of head (+support) do you use?

eMH, you did a great job on the moon photo. It is a super start for the Q and ultra telephoto photography. keep on shooting.

You are correct about the "Reach Of The Q" thread being a long one. But many things are covered including modifying lens adapters for better IQ, red dot scopes and their adapters, tripods and tripod heads, etc.

Think the Blitz Star Pointer would work. I can't read the language to get the fine details. My adapter was made by a company in the US (where I am located). It is all metal and attaches great to the RD10. But, there is a little play side to side. It requires about a 10 second "calibration" each time it is mounted on camera.

One thing about red dot scopes. It isn't legal to ship them to all countries. They are everywhere in the US, but can't be shipped to some other countries. They are considered war equipment. You may have to buy from the distributor in your country.

I vastly prefer the tube red dot scopes vs the screens. Tried 2 screens and never got them to work well for me. I'm weird. Bought a Tasco "tube" red dot first. It was good, but I liked the Pentax better. Did run into a situation where Pentax made a difference. People are a little jumpy about people aiming things at eagles (endangered here). I was out in a field photographing a well known nest with eagles. A constable saw this and got very inquisitive about why I was aiming a red dot at the eagle! None of my explanations seemed to totally win him over. He was familiar with Pentax cameras. I pointed out Pentax made the RD10 as an accessory for their cameras. Thanfully, the RD10 has Pentax in big letters. He was cool with it after that.

Thanks,
barondla

Welcome to the Q and this forum eMH. The Q packs a lot of performance with good tele lenses. Your moon shot demonstrates this well. Great job!

My main ultra tele set up is original Q or Q7 with Pentax DA*300. I also use an Olympus OM 180 f2 at times. I have 3rd party lens adapters for Olympus, Canon EOS, and Pentax. I use the shuttered oem Pentax adapter and DA*300 the most.

Tripod is a Gitzo with large Arca Swiss Monoball head. Some people prefer gimbal heads, especially for birds in flight. I would never be fast enough to manually focus flying birds with the Q. So the gimbal doesn't excite me much. The Q/300 system is relatively compact and the gimbal head kills that. Plus I would have to be changing heads all the times for other shots.

Astronomical subjects don't work easily with ball, gimbal, or pan heads. An equatorial mount makes it far easier to keep objects centered. Motorized is even better.

The one thing I could not do without is the adapted Pentax red dot scope. This makes subject location very quick. It isn't easy to center subjects using a 300mm lens on a Q, unless a red dot scope is available.

There is a lot of info on using the Q with adapted lenses in "the reach of the Q" thread in this forum. Look it up if you haven't read it yet.

Thanks,
barondla

Funny story Kwb. A little dance we all go thru.

I am lucky to have a Pentax K mount bellows bought years ago. I enjoy using the Q and a reversed 50mm El- Nikkor on it. Extreme macro isn't easy but it is fun.

Good info Abbazz. Sounds like the Q-S1 has upgraded circuitry. Though it is possible they aren't old enough to show the problem. Besides caps and batteries there is a way to make info last. Don't remember the term it goes by. It is more expensive.

Thanks,
barondla
