why I won't buy a k3 (Warning: Satire Thread)

I once was travelling to US and had two events I would go to a week apart, one on east coast, other on west coast. So I looked at the idea of travelling on the ground just to see the places that are not airports or the spot places the event I go to are at. But I was not in a position to drive. So I looked at bus or train, and for that distance train is more attractive - get up and move about.

I could not find a route that could get me across the country in the week I had and at a fare less than the price of flying and paying for hotels for all the nights. And I would have had the inconveniences of travelling all the time. What a pit, because I have often thought a ground trip across US would be interesting.

Problems on the schedule were things like waiting a day or two at some changing station along the way because of the sparse timetable.

BTW: in the end I went to one of the events and then home. No-one in the US got my money for the other event or the trip between the events.

We used to call those bendy buses, when they had engines in them.

Electric, by nature, tends to offer more torque than ICE, and that is part of the enablement of the high acceleration that is possible.

This morning on the way to work, between Bampton and Clanfield, on the 60mph road with the nice sweeping bends that remind me of part of the road between Hay and Narrandera, there was a pheasant on the other side of the road. It took off and flew upwards relatively steeply. Did not bounce off the front of my car so there is no damage to my car, which I washed at the weekend. Now looks grubby because it was rainy this morning.

Some years ago I was sitting on the bus with a colleague. There was a phone call from one of those people who likes to advertise their private affairs by shouting as if the person at the other end hears the shouting, not the phone call, where one of the first lines was "where are you". He said, the most common words on the mobile "where are you".

I had a friend who went to Singapore, way back when those were fashionable. There was a kind of adult toy that looked just like that. People, adults, would buy them and then go outside to a place where they could be seen and lift it like they were making a call and talk for a long time like in a phone call, except there was no other end of the conversation. They were trying to show off they were rich enough to have one.

My friend said it was a very sad sight, seeing adults who needed to get their self-actualisation through such an obvious pretense.

I guess they are the same kind of people who buy Rollex watches - they were not even smart enough to know the real one has only one 'l', let alone all the other details that mean anyone with half an eye could see they were a pretender.

But it was one of those that back in the day you had to talk very loudly for the person at the other end to hear you. Remember those old rides on the bus? Works just the same now, even with a no good battery, except the little lights do not come on.

Those led to the Taiwanese name which translates roughly 'the big brick thing'. (da ge da - really easy characters to recognise, so you seem so many shops selling them or services based on them.

There are many animal lovers here who would be offended.

What I can't understand is how bothered they are by road kill events. In Oz we just get a stronger roo bar so the vehicle is not damaged by the animal bouncing off the front.

Very useful for those days when you have a low blood pressure event and feel all sweaty, feeble and nauseous.

Might save you from having to lie on the floor for a while.

My grandfather, who was a plumber had a solution for losing the chuck key. Attach it to a chain on the power cord. Worked well for his drills in the back of the plumber's ute.

Good reason for adding washing windows to the summer games. Washing windows is a sport played in almost all countries, if not all.

Think of that decision to use your middle name as a security feature. People who do not know will do wrong things when they attempt to spoof you.

And for all of you worried about landing 747 on short strips, check the Qantas 747 at Longreach airport in central Queensland.

To land it there they took out all the removable stuff which was later shipped in a truck and refitted to make the museum exhibit. And they flew an absolute minimum fuel flight to avoid unnecessary mass on board when landing. I think there was not enough on board for a go round, by flight plan decision.

I have been on many 747 flights, in various version of the machine.

On one of the very late United 747 flights from Sydney to west coast one of the dunny doors fell off the hinges mid way, not above Midway though. More like Fiji. One of the rotund male staff on board did manage the operational repairs necessary.

Another in the last week of United 747 flights on that route was chockers with customers because another had been cancelled because of a failure before it depart US on the outward journey. Deemed not worth repairing when it has less than two weeks' service remaining.

The United meal trays were the silliest I have seen on any airline. They had two levels n the bottom with no vertical piece between them, and posts under the high side to sit it on the tray table. You could not rotate the tray on the table to make it place different things at the front, and spills on it would leak onto the table. And even United did not use them on any other plane I travelled on. They could have at least just tossed them when they broke and replaced them with normal ones, but that kind of idea seems too hard for big US companies.

The ability to flex makes them able to withstand more rough weather and turbulence than making them rigid, like the pre 1950s ones.

Fits at the gate better. Although the back out and get going procedure will be delayed while they fold it back down.

I had a different idea to make the airport smaller and less walking.
Have a small number of gates.
Load the baggage and the other stuff somewhere else at the airport, in the workers' only areas.
When ready to board the people drive up to a popup gangway location.
Popup the gangway.
Load the people, already in the holding area, so they can verify all the baggage and people match.
Lower the gangway.
Drive on forwards - just like a bus stop.

In the US that would make the plane loading process just like everything else in the airport - emulate the country bus stop feel.

So then your selection criteria are different than mine.

I want the vendors to provide us both the choice of buying our preferred type. BTW, sometimes I do eat salad with tomatoes, for which I want salad style tomatoes.

With food I am less impressed by size per unit than the quality.

And size makes very little difference when buying by weight.

When I look at a price I do not care whether it is the cost of the goods or tax I am paying. I look at how much I pay to get the thing I am buying. What I hate are the cheaters in the market who show a price before adding on compulsory extras. The price includes tax and credit card using fee and ... . If I do not have a choice about paying those amounts, do not display any liar price on the web site or the display stand.
