The 18-55 WR does not have an aperture ring, that's the problem...

Hi almo,

With the reversed 18-55, you could try to fix the little lever that mechanically opens and shuts the aperture by jamming it with a small piece of rubber, but frankly, it's a pain.
If you have an "old fashioned" lens with an aperture dial, reverse the lens with the adapter then and select the aperture via the dial. Should be far more convenient.

If that doesn't help you can assume that the orientation sensor is either broken or (partially) disconnected from the electronics board onto which it is soldered.
This sensor is likely a tiny 2x2 mm2 part. An exchange of this part is very difficult as the solder connections are typically at the underside of the device.
So repair guys will tend to put in a complete new circuit bard.

So you can do one of the following:
- Live with it
- Send the camera in for repairs which might mean a new electronic circuit board
- Get a new camera

robert52,

Welcome to the club :-)
K10D is great for Australia, so much light available there. And the K10D ist dustproof. Get some sealed lenses to go with it.
I spent seven months traveling Australia recently, mostly in the dusty outback. I loved it, but the lenses I used started to grind like a pepper mill after some time.
Avoid changing lenses in the open otherwise you will have loads of particles on the sensor and in the viewfinder.

Cheers from Berlin, which is so grey that I really need a K5 here for good low light pix.

jephi!

PS. For photographing wildlife on a budget the weather sealed Pentax DA 55-300 WR is unbeatable.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Modified K20D that can now "see" infrared, ultraviolet and of course visible light.

Asking Price
280.00 EUR

Item Location
Berlin (Germany)

Item Description
Dear Pentaxians,

I sell my beloved converted "see all" PENTAX K20D.
The standard bandpass filter in front of the sensor has been replaced professionally by clear glass.
This allows it to see infrared and ultraviolet light in addition to the visible light.
The camera can be "tuned" to the "colour window" of your choice by using screw-on filters on the lens.

What can you do with it?

By changing the screw-on filters in front of the lens you can take pictures in different infrared ranges, visible light and ultraviolet within seconds.
The live view lets you see the scene, even when the viewfinder is blackened by the (IR or UV) filter.

The following photos were taken with the camera for sale here:

Nature in infrared (720nm filter) and visible light :

10 Euro bill with infrared (720nm filter) and without:

Find more sample pictures here:
Mixed samples: jephi's Album: K20D CLEAR GLASS MODDED - SAMPLES - PentaxForums.com

680nm samples:

720nm samples:

Shutter count as of 04-Mar-2014 around 33,338

Auto focus works fine (at least with my AF lenses FA50 1.4, DA18-55WR, DA55-300, DA 55-200, SIGMA 10-20, SIGMA 105 Macro))

The camera has seen use, also in the desert, see pics, but it has always been reliable thanks to Pentax dust protection sealings :-)

The screen at the back has always been protected by a GGS multilayer glass screen.
The small screen on top has a protective cover, too. I think it is from 3M.
The hot shoe is protected by the original slide on cover.

There are a number of small dust particles in the path of the view finder, which I am unable to remove :-(
The sensor is clean, but may have some loose dust particles on it.

There is one small issue which concerns the glass that replaces the original filter glass in front of the sensor:
On the lower right hand two small bits are chipped away, see picture.
These chips are NOT over the sensor area, so pictures are not affected by this.

What you get:

- Pentax K20D with clear glass in front of sensor (the very camera that has taken all pictures shown and referred to here)
- Original body cap
- Original Pentax strap (new)
- Original Pentax Charger for Li-50 batteries with Euro-plug power cable
- 4 original Pentax Li-50 batteries. Condition should be good.
- 3 third party Li-50 compatible batteries. Condition is hard to tell.

My estimate is that none of these batteries should have seen more than 50 charge cycles.

Charley,

I recently spent 8 months travelling down under, including some fossicking around Kalgoorlie. You certainly are lucky to live in Australia.

If you plan to shoot in the outback, get the sealed lenses (WR). That is what I should have gotten before my trip.
The DA* series should be great for you.
The Limited series has excellent quality and I love them for their small size. Great for travel!

Cheers from Berlin where light in winter is so dull, no sun for weeks!
