Pentax 31/1.8 Limited vs Sony 35/1.4 GM

I have used both and currently have the Sony/Zeiss 35mm F/1.4. The 31mm LTD was one of my favorite lenses on my K-3. It was fine on my K-1 and I used it on my Sony A7II for a couple of years before selling it. I don't know which Sony body you are using, but on anything newer than the A7II AF will be greatly improved. The 35mm GM is a great lens and I have tried it out several times, but never bought. The Sigma and the Sony Zeiss are also great options. The modern mirrorless AF is simply amazing. The only reason I would keep the 31mm is for size.

Yup. I am wrong and happy to be so. Those are some great specs and a great price.

Really interested to see how this performs in the real world.

I would be rather surprised if Nikon doesn't implement a mechanical shutter. I use the e-shutter on my A9s more than the mechanical, but I still have use for the mechanical. I have not had any reason or desire to upgrade, but a better mechanical is on my wish list for the A9III if one is ever produced. Nikon needs some "wow" tech to get some momentum going. They are producing some sold cameras and lenses (just like Panasonic), but they are just a step behind Canon and Sony right now.

If it doesn't have a mechanical shutter, then what shutter is closing to protect the sensor? It will have a mechanical shutter.

"Big improvement in color balance?" What does that mean? Nikon files have always had great colors. I didn't think they were bad enough to allow for any big improvements.

Hopefully the Z9 is an A1/R3 killer on steroids.

GFX 50S II announced

The Fuji GFX50sII offers a more portable package at a lower weight and with IBIS. I have not used the 50sII but the but the AF in the 50s was great for work in a studio. It's not a sports or events camera, but for moving around in a studio it performed very well. I'm guessing the 50sII is improved. I'm not sure if Pentax has improved tethering on the 645z or not, but i thought the Fuji was better for working tethered. If you travel and work on location I would opt for the Fuji. The downside is that the 645z is built like a tank and the Fuji GFX50s was not on the same level as the Pentax 645z in terms of build quality. I'm sure the 50sII has improved build quality, but I doubt it will be as rugged as the 645z. If you are working slow from a tripod and you are controlling your light then the 645z is excellent. If you are traveling and work handheld, tethered then go Fuji. If you are already invested in the Pentax system, then its hard to justify switching.

I think the 50sII is more of an upgrade for existing GFX50 users and it will help put a lot of GFX bodies on the secondary market which will help Fuji sell more glass.

Canon R1 leaked. Unreal specs

R1 is definitely coming, but most of those specs won't happen. I don't believe Canon has the tech for an 85MP global shutter sensor. 15.5 DR... not happening. 9 stop IBIS.... nope. The 40FPS might be possible in AF-S. I doubt Canon has any lenses that can adjust focus fast enough for 40fps. You would have to be in release priority. In focus priority getting 20fps would be pretty amazing. With the Sony A1 the lenses say "up to 30fps" and I promise that I own a couple that won't hit 15fps in focus priority. There is no way those big F/1.2 RF lenses are hitting 40fps in focus priority.

I think Canon has an 85MP camera coming to compete with Sony a7r5 which is expected to be 100MPs. I expect the R1 will have a lower resolution sensor. Canon has never put high MP sensors in their pro-bodies. 50MP makes sense for 8K. Whatever it is, Canon will make a beast of a camera.

A little surprised it happened this fast, but the writing has been on the wall for a couple of years. DSLRs have hit a wall in terms of technical advancement, but mirrorless is still a long way from being a mature system. There is much greater capacity for growth in mirrorless.

Sensor in K1 MkII successor?

If Ricoh is going to continue to build the 645 line, then going with the 62MP in the next K1 and 100MP in the next 645 makes the most sense. Like the sensors used in the current K1 and 645, the 62MP and the 100MP share the same silicon which makes has some cost advantages. It doesn't appear that the 62MP is a sensor that Sony currently sells to 3rd parties though. It appears that they only FF sensor that Sony sells to other camera manufactures is the 24MP.

The 55MP IMG409 is a BSI sensor, but it's not stacked so it should have a lower cost, but it's not on Sony's list of commercially available sensors.

Sigma fp,an L mount camera.

It's disappointing that the Foveon FF sensor is still so far from production. I think its a technology with a significant amount of potential. Hopefully they can improve the color shift issues as ISO increases and improve the red/magenta color channel performance.

I would expect Sigma to go ahead and release a FF L-mount body with a standard sensor just to get a unit in the hands of users and get feedback on what they need to improve. That way when they are ready to produce a FF L-mount Foveon based camera they will be releasing a refined product.

I believe it has 6-stop IBIS and does very well as a handheld camera. Even at 100mps.

They are, but the cost saving of doing that for the last 20+ years were more than worth it. No one system is perfect. They all have advantages and disadvantages. They are all vulnerable in some way.

Parts set aside for warranty and repair are completely different than parts for new manufacture. They will keep parts for warranty and repair for years after manufacturing has ceased.

Good question. Rumors by some Fuji people is that the GFX100s was pushed out a early. The $10,000 GFX100 is only a year old and now Fuji is releasing the 100s at $6,000. Apparently the 50s and 50r (same sensor as the 645z) are out of production. Fuji would have liked to have ran the 50s/50r one more year and leave the GFX100 alone at the top and then release the 100s. Fuji has been selling the 50s/50r remarkably well.

I did some marketing work for a window and door manufacturer 10 or so years ago and while walking the plant floor they told me that they only had enough inventory on hand to run the plant for 12 hours. Different parts suppliers are constantly delivering the needed parts to keep production going 24/7. Then he started talking about how Toyota revolutionized manufacturing and supply-chain management. most your major manufacturers only keep a few hours worth of inventory.

I have no idea how cameras are made, but inventory is not desirable for most modern manufacturing. If Ricoh has any 645z sensors they are probably sitting in 645z bodies in a warehouse.

The rumor is the Fuji 50s & 50r are going to be discontinued once the GFX100s starts shipping. The reason Fuji is putting the GFX100s right now is due to the end of the 50s & 50r.

The wafer that was used for the 50MP sensor is the same one used for the K-1 sensor so both should be nearing their end of life.

I think Fuji has done a phenomenal job. Fuji stopped making ILCs for several years and its not until the X-Pro 1 that they got back into the business and launched a new system and then launched the GFX system. Given how much they have accomplished and how far they have come in less than 10 years.... Yeah they are doing a great job. I hope they keep pushing the limits. That 100s for under $6,000 is amazing.

The first Plasma HD TV I ever say was made by Pioneer and cost over $10,000 for a 36" display. I have an old 46" Panasonic Plasma HD that I paid $600 several years ago. In 10 years 8K will probably be as common as 4K and just a cheap.... maybe cheaper.
