We have given photobooks as Christmas presents... not all are a "magnum opus".

As far as I am concerned they are the new "photo albums".

That's enough to make a grown man commit blasphemy. :D
I did however have a record by the New Christy Minstrels at one point. Funny I can't find many of the topical songs of the era, but you can find that? As Kiefer Sutherland said so often on "24", "Something's not right here."

They are working on the next K3 upgrade. When it's done it will be sold on-line and in some stores. I'm not sure what else needs to be said or why.

Do we want them to release something before it's ready?

Then take your K-3 which is a pretty good camera, and go shoot.

Taken with the Pentax XG-1.

My daughter-in-law with Tess's old K-x and Sigma 18-250 which were passed on to her after Tess took my first K-5 and declared it hers. Taking pictures of her dogs on a frozen lake. If ever there was day to turn that lens hood around. Light coming off the snow at all angles. Oh well...

My long term project was a book on Algonquin Park. Whether or not it's still a project, I am uncertain. I've shown first drafts to park staff. They aren't interested. Well they are interested if I pay the full cost of publishing and they just have to put it on their shelves. So for now I have a very nice personal album documenting all aspects of my time in the park, along with a couple of my favourite essays on various Canoe Tripping related topics. To print them as 1 offs is about $150 Canadian, occasionally I can get them printed at half price for about $80 CDN and if I ever do another order, one of my friends has asked for a copy, at that price. And she's in the book in 3 different places. I'm not seeing it as a big seller unless I can get the price way down. The price the park staff would like to see it at would be 39.95. They'd take $10 per copy, for selling it, I'd have to get them produced for $29 to make $1 a copy. I'm simply not going to like the IQ and paper weight of what I can get for that.

So it's sort of an on going project. Inertia says that even though I've already added two pages with new wildlife images, I'll probably never order another copy. It's sort of withering on the vine at the moment. During the last 10 years I've probably paid over $10,000 (much of it paid for by photographer clients I took out on trips) in park fees for over 300 days in the park , carried 20 pounds of camera gear over 200 km and paddled it for another 700 or 800 km. I've taken images in places where there's probably never even been a DSLR before. It's been a great ride, but I'm ready to lay it aside.

I'm looking forward to be able to go for a trip, and just enjoy the trip, with maybe my K-3, 18-135 and 60-250, and just be a tourist like everyone else.

I kind of feel like I'm retiring from my retirement job.

FA 20-35 or F 24-50....Which should I get ?

The issue for me, with all this type of lens is I like the 28-105, and I'm hoping at some point that there will be a Pentax designed 18-35 ƒ4 of the same quality. I can wait.

I didn't expect to like the DFA 28-105 nearly as much as I do, and my wife likes it. She only really likes about 3 of our 20 lenses so that's really saying something. Especially since of my 18-135, 60-250, Tamron 17-50, 35-80, etc, it's the only zoom she likes.

I want a variable aperture 18-35 the same quality.

I gave up and bought a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. At some point I may consider a 20 or 24. But then I have an FA-j 18-35 as well. I could just never pull the trigger on either of those lenses. In any case it's a tough decision, and most of the requests for information were answered in away that I decided you may as well decide on whether 20 or 24mm? If you own the 28-105 or 24-70 I'd be looking at the 20-35 just for the extra UWA foal lengths.

And if you're an old glass kind of guy there are lots of lenses like may 35-80 that could be paired with the 20-35. It's an odd reaction, but I found the decision was a complete saw-off and impossible to come to a decision on. I think I walked away from the decision, if there had only been one lens there, I probably would have bought whichever and been happy. Weird eh?

Especially if you are shooting on a K-1 where your normal macro lens looks more like a wide angle lens. The same "lack of crop FoV" that hits you with long lens shots, also hits you with macro.

K-3 and Tamron SP AF 300 ƒ2.8 ED [IF] and F 1.7x AF adapter for 510mm ƒ4.5
ISO 640, ƒ6.3, 1/3200s

I was out briefly today and lucked into adding bird to my "one per bird" photo album, a Red Crossbill. This is pretty typical of their habits, sitting on the top branch of a fir tree. I have another one, that was backlit and not nearly as sharp, not good enough to post.

2018-02-17-Rd-crossbill by Norm Head, on Flickr

The guy beside me was hand holding and had the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F4G ED VR and bragged it was only 3880 grams and easy to hand hold. Having looked up the price for that lens before, I didn't have the heart to tell him my Tammy weighs considerably less, even with the 1.7 attached, giving me 510 ƒ4.5. I just held it briefly and said "very nice." This one was also hand held.

If I think about all the things I could have accomplished if not hanging out on the forum, it's just mind boggling. :D
That should be a tip... :D "Set a half hour timer when you start on the forum, and leave when it goes off."

The above picture actually reminds me of being at Yellowstone, I've sen so many Yellowstone pictures that don't.

I'm not sure how we would set that up... any mods around? It certainly would be better to do it before we get a lot of posts.

That's probably the most bizarre photo project I've ever heard of. But back in my film days, some of my favourite images were double exposed rolls. But I always did it by accident. :D

Do you know that a few photographers have rated the 31 ltd. as one of the top 3 lenses ever, or that the 77 ltd is probably one of the best portrait lenses on any platform?

Those lenses are still available new, no need for eBay or garage sales. It all depends on what you are interested in of course, but there are many older lenses with unique rendering characteristics, worth giving a try, if you're interested. It's pretty rare to find a long term Pentax shooter who doesn't have at least some interest in older glass. IN my pack I have the completely moderns DA*60-250 with it's edge to edge sharpness and relatively low (for a zoom) CA and fringing. But I also have the DA*200 and DFA 100 macro, both modern adaptations of older designs that are easily up to snuff in terms of what's been released with modern glass.

But my guess is, without an interest in older glass, it's going to be really hard to maintain an interest in Pentax, and it's relatively slow lens releases.

Thank god for birds, "If you feed us we will come."
I find watching bird behaviour pretty interesting. It definitely makes the time photographing them more enjoyable. My biggest tip for birds would be, take something to sit on, you might be there a while. That also can be true for other wildlife.

Inspired by a couple of quotes from the last week.

QuoteQuote:

I own a photography gallery and lab. The photographers with the best/most competent showing in the galleries never talk about their cameras or lenses, only about their images and their projects.

Read more at: My Canon to Pentax experience: Why I love Pentax, but might still leave. - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com

I'm proud to be an Ambassador for Pentax, and rarely check in on the Forum, as there's too much whining and not enough sharing of locations, tips, and usable insights. That's my take.

Read more at: Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR camera detailed specifications leaked - Page 18 - PentaxForums.com

1. Rules...

1. Feel free to share any tips, your mindset going into a project, image related to the project and your thoughts on them.
2. This is about what your current photographic focus is, and any things you might think are your original "takes" on the subject.
3. No whining. You made your bed, sleep in it.
4. It doesn't matter what you are shooting with.
5. No trashing gear or any part of it. People pay good money in the systems they select. Bad mouthing their choice is rude and disrespectful. In some forums it will earn you a lifetime ban. It doesn't matter what camera you choose to bad mouth, somebody here owns one.

Of particular note are good shooting locations, places you go back to over and over, and samples of the photos you get there. This should be the everything but gear thread. Composition, shooting modes, strategies for getting "the shot", post processing, is all fair game. But, no gear talk or speculation on camera companies or product. This is for what you are doing or would like to do, with what you own.

Hopefully, a thread about shooting pictures, not gear.

When this subject comes up I always think of the song Cocaine by Dave Von ROnk

"They say cocaine is for horses, not for men,
They say it will kill me but they won't say when."

They say Pentax is doomed, but they won't say when.

There are a lot of fools on this forum and elsewhere that have been proclaiming Pentax is doomed for a very long time.
Which reminds me of that other issue.

"If you live each day like it's your last, someday you'll be right."
However as that relates to Pentax is doomed, my take is, "not likely in my lifetime."

With all due respect, considering an image with noise "pure" might be a little bit misleading. The light coming to the camera is "pure" noise is an impurity. Calling a noisy the pure image is in my mind backwards. If you can clean up noise without affecting resolution, you are cleaning up impurities. Not creating them.
