The trick is to keep them in your interior coat pockets, that will help your batteries maintain their charge.

Doesn't the battery on the Pentax KP have a lower capacity than the K-1? if you were going APS-C as your back-up I'd suggest keep the DA*55 and throw in a DA21mm f/3.2 on the KP. But considering the lower capacity I'd go with the second K-1.

I agree temperatures should be mild. However, my experience near the poles was in Svalbard, in the dead of winter: temps hovered around -20 degrees, fog was common and reduced visibility in dangerous ways. There were frequent intense winds which would make photography from a ship nigh on impossible.

When I went to Norway a few years ago I brought two DSLR bodies with me and a small Leica M3 with a fast 50mm and a tri-elmar - cold weather wreaks havoc with DSLRs. If you are out and about and the weather takes a turn for the worst and something goes wrong with your primary camera, you're fluffie'd.Take a backup, even if it is just a small ME super film body loaded with partially expired Kodak gold 100*, In such an event taking the FA31 or the FA*24mm intead of the DA*55mm f/1.4 will give you a workable manual back up option. In Norway I had to fall back on my M3 as I didn't take my secondary camera on me on a trip, the weather turned windy and cold enough where if you spit it goes *plink* on the frozen ground**. The batteries on the DSLR drained at an alarming rate, but I didn't panic - I had a film back-up.

*Last ditch options are often like that.
** you also might want to consider growing a beard. Trust me, it will keep your face warm.

However Early adopters can get burnt by teething issues and shipping costs if there is a product recall, and left without the means by which they make income. Having said that: that many professionals have more than one camera - so if one is off for repairs/ refitting they aren't caught out. Also I have been in the fortunate position where my equipment has paid for itself. My 645D paid for itself in four months, My 645Z paid for itself in 5. The Leica S2 paid for itself in 11 months*

I couldn't agree more. I would also reinforce the idea of getting the best you can afford. I got some good advice from my audiophile friends when I was buying some bookshelf speakers** last year : make a shortlist, audition them all with the same music, get the best you can afford - or even a pair you can't afford at the time, save up a little if you have to. Speakers, strictly speaking, do not hold their value well at all but if you find what satisfies your taste you will have them for a very long time.

* The Leica S2 costs nearly three times as much as the pentax digital 645 cameras, the lenses are also considerably more expensive especially the leave shutter variants [I'm including shutter service costs] .

** It was a battle between Klipsch,Jbl, Monitor audio and Kef. The Klipsch RP-160M speakers won.

I would at the very least take it to a reputable camera shop for a CLA - and possibly replace the light seals which may have degraded over time from lack of use.

A well known issue that the LX is prone to is the dreaded sticky mirror, where the mirror get stuck to the top of the mirror box and fails to return to its resting place. There are also common electrical issues with auto exposure - which can be expensive/impossible to repair.

Bear in mind that some of Canons currently produced lens designs and coatings haven't been changed since 1993*. When it comes to digital optimization**, I have to tip my hat to Fuji and Olympus...everyone else are complete laggards compared to them.

* it is only in the past 5 or so years where they have been producing/updating new and improved lenses and coatings
**I have yet to come across a lens that has significant issues with digital sensors. I have seen some pretty bad ghosting, but other than that: Nada.

Pentax never achieved the degree of professional demand to make it worthwhile to make counterfeit products. The focus scale window on a focus free lens is hilarious.

I have handled fake leica cameras that were so convincing they were only undone when the internal gears were scrutinized by a Leica technician.

Indeed the Pentax 15mm f/4 is a crop lens. Unless you're a big fan of massive amounts of vignetting, the DA 15mm f/4 isn't the lens you are looking for.

In my experience lenses wider than 20mm that are designed for full 35mm SLRs are seldom light or compact. Especially when the lens in question is a zoom.

to prove my point: Nikon has several zoom lenses with apertures ranging for f/2.8 to f/4 and focal lengths extending below 20mm - and even the slower ones are bricks.

I see a lot of field curvature in the MTFs: also astigmatism, which will make the edges at wide apertures with this lens will look a bit mushy. @ f/8 the lens looks like a solid performer.

Unlikely. Though some of the sounds made by the electronics of the flash units themselves may reach ultrasonic levels which could potentially disrupt their flight patterns.

At 1:1 power any flash over 100ws will be pretty loud - that popping sound is actually a sonic boom. I doubt think the Einstein 600ws is any quieter than my Elinchrom 600ws heads, if the energy levels are the same: it stand to reason the acoustic noise should be similar.

Got a cat tunnel for my cat...

Pentax K10D SMCP-K 50mm f/1.2 @ f/8 ISO 800 1/180th - Godox AD360 bounced off ceiling @ 1/8th power

He has trouble getting traction when running on the linoleum flooring in his indoor play area, but he has no trouble getting traction while in the tunnel: which I shall refer to as the cat launcher.

My 13 week old Lynx point Siamese, Tigger, is growing up. His markings are becoming darker.

Pentax K10D SMCP-K 50mm f/1.2 @ f/1.2 ISO 100 1/180th - Godox AD360 bounced off ceiling @ 1/8th power

I got him a little Cat tunnel which has two dangling pop-poms at each end which he really enjoys playing with.

Pentax K10D SMCP-K 50mm f/1.2 @ f/8 ISO 800 1/180th - Godox AD360 bounced off ceiling @ 1/8th power.

Pentax K10D SMCP-K 50mm f/1.2 @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/180th - Godox AD360 bounced off ceiling @ 1/8th power.

I have to say the Leica S2 renders better than the K10D - they both have CCD sensors.Tigger @ 12 weeks:

Leica S2 - Leica Summarit-S 70mm f/2.5 ASPH 1/125th f/6.1 ISO 160 - Godox AD360 bounced off ceiling [cropped image]

With flash alone, HSS has nothing to do with motion stopping capability*. Motion stopping ability has more to do with the speed of the rise time of the flash pulse also expressed as the t.1 time. Most manufacturers only state the T.5 time which is less useful when determining how effective a flash is at at stopping action at any given power level.

* However if you are working with available light on location, then yes: a higher shutter speed will be desirable, and HSS can be used to allow for a wider aperture than would ordinarily be possible with flash - However your ability to use light modifiers is severely curtailed as the flash pulse has to be extended over a longer time than what is commonly called for.

I recall these are made in Ukraine - these lenses often had quality control issues. Good copies are said to deliver performance that rivals more expensive options.

I have heard pretty good things about this lens, the design has a solid reputation on 35mm.

Forget traveling with that on an airline, or traveling with it at all: at 760000 Torr that amount of pressure would be rearing to come back out at you should the containment vessel fail. And the additional thickness of the lens barrel required to contain that kind of pressure would completely offset the weight saved. Solid cat is the way to go.
