No it does not do well handheld and no one should even assume that. I get more details out of GFX50R shot on tripod compared to sloppy handheld samples dpreview has provided with GFX100 cameras.
Use of flash changes things.
12MP cameras are good for handheld snaps. Tripods have been around since the beginning and there is good reason why.

That is not how it is. Cheapest GF50 exceeds resolution of each single shot frame I have ever taken with a single shot FF camera. D850 & 500/4 on tripod does not the pure resolving power.
Buy your gfx before throwing such stuff.
And pdaf striping does not require pushing. Only hard contrast.

Jim Kasson has tested PDAF banding on GFX100 in his 14bit vs. 16bit comparison. It looks horrible and completely ruins any gains the 16bit mode might have.
Nikon and Fuji are not able to get it right. Sony has succeeded.

The 100MP 44x33mm is ruined by PDAF-array. Why use such sensor with a DSLR?
That is probably one reason why Pentax has not proceeded with an update.
But the large variant 100MP should not be PDAF type. Maybe the unit price is too expensive so far. It would however result in that "medium format look". Now I do not see any "medium format look" in GFX 50R -images.

How should I use a phone instead of a tilting screen in this situation? It will only end in one of three ways - 1) Wet clothing 2) Wet clothing and wasted gear 3) Wet clothing, wasted gear and injured photographer Click for short video clip. I'm balancing on some rocks standing in water and trying to find a composition at the same time. Ambient temperature -15C. I did use my phone to capture the clip but I could only use either the phone OR adjust the camera on the ballhead. Should I use some optional smartphone arm to attach to the hotshoe? No remote screen will work practically in these situations. Someone should put that Pentax designer to use his own design out there on the field and remind him of the -10C WR spec of the gear. Then ask him to pair a smartphone as a remote view during a rain(storm). |

Specs race produces dull and uninspiring cameras. Giving back movements to digital camera would be a grand step forward. And switching back to 1:1 sensors.
Time of puny FF format is over.

Just slap in the big MF sensor (54mm wide variant) and sell it for 10 000$. This will cause havoc in current state of subframe digital "MF".

Well, what's the point of releasing a MILC if it does not really do anything better than a DSLR? Total system size is not the answer (so far). If the camera itself is small, lenses still tend to be big. It should be some real technological advantage which is the driver behind the MILC push to the market. Super fast readout is one of the key requirements for computational photography applications. So far, only Sony has brought fast sensors to the table AND included them in their cameras. But even if Sony FF sensors are ~fast, they are many steps behind the sensors used in smartphones.

Yea. There are two types of mirrorless cameras now which have some advantage over a DSLR
1) Very fast readout sensor cameras (only Sony)
2) Large sensor resolution monsters (Phase, Fuji) for maximum IQ
Everything else is junk on MILC front. Canon may get there but now they lag in the speed race due to slow sensor tech.

Someone wanted report of Sony in cold environment?
Been there. Done that with a7r1 and 2. Down to -35C (very long periods) where the rear LCD will freeze and stop displaying anything (OLED EVF still works). In short, they basically function but operating them is a real pain. Like. Real. Pain.
Canon 90mm TS-E is fun to operate in the same conditions. But it paid off big time. I had to wonder how the heck did that Metabones adapter even work flawlessly with the lens in those conditions. That Canon lens has fully electronic aperture and not once did it fail.

Pentax 645Z is sold locally (the only shop which has it listed here) for 6299€ for the body only. 7199€ for the kit which has 55mm lens. Finland is Finland though. I expect to see something like 7999€ as the price for GFX100s.

Well, GFX100S might make some happy Pentaxians soon. If there is some leftover stock somewhere it has to be sold and prices lowered. 6000$ GFX100s vs $6000 645Z is a bit off these days.

I agree, 6000$ is a LOT to ask. 3999$ is realistic what it offers compared to K-1.
But 645Z is also priced far too high for what it is. GFX50 price class is correct and no more.

When did you use 50S? 50-series received major FW update last summer. AF is not a laggy slowpoke anymore and certainly more reliable than it used to be.
There is GF45-100 stabilized zoom available currently. No, it's not super wide but wide enough given the 4:3 aspect ratio.
Also, GF32-64 zoom becomes more useful with the IBIS now.

GFX is good for everyday activities excluding soccer or something else requiring long telephoto lens. FWIW, now "ancient" GFX 50R tracks moving subjects better with CDAF and the "pancake" GF50mm lens compared to K-1 + HD24-70 WR. There is also Eye-AF.

Use minimum-option for time between exposures. Then it always works right. I have done hundreds of composites this way. I set the number of exposures to X, then delay between exposures to minimum instead of Y seconds.
Interval timer is generally a mess. For all brands.
Be aware that, with cameras having the accelerator chip, minimum delay is anything between 2-5 seconds after exposure length is longer than ~25 seconds. This happens with KP and K-1 MK2.
If the delay is longer than 2sec, trails may appear with small gaps in them. Then put the camera to continuous mode and shoot away with remote release triggered down and combine aftwerwards in post. This bypasses random delays with long exposures.

Shadow pushing is nice...up to a certain degree. ETTR exposed RAW is better in shadow pushing too. Pentax allows massive shadow boosting with clean results when using in-camera multiexposures. 128x ME is good for massive push of 6-7 EV. Just watch out for shadow stepping which is the result of not having noise in the source material (14bits are not enough). Let the shutter click! Shutter likes to be used!

Just open ETTR exposed cRAW with RAWDigger and check the histogram. It is has gaps in the hightlight-end. Now, one pulls back the exposure with the gaps and gets stairstepping gradients where there should be smooth tonal transitions.
No, it is not an issue in all files. Just those that should contain smooth skies for example. Or other large flat surfaces.

There is a real case for ETTL. If one uses Sony's compressed RAW, the highlight part of the file is heavily messed up. Pulling it back results in visible gradation of tonality in highlight areas.
ETTR is bad with Sony cRAW. Use uncompressed if optimal IQ and exposure is something you care about.

Look for a kit which has the battery grip. It extends shooting time a lot and eats your current K-3 battery.

Option 3. I doubt there are big differences in DR between KP and MK3. KP for tripod, MK3 for other stuff then. 2MP will not make a difference.
But, if mk3 has 16x pixelshift mode, it outputs a nice 104 MP RAW. It is roughly as good as Fuji GFX100 then in raw resolving power if you have good lenses.

If you have the guts to do it, open up the lens aperture lever mechanism and see that the ring to which the aperture lever is attached to rotates freely. My 15mm Dragonfly lost the tension of its aperture springs due to huge friction which sometimes jammed up the aperture and it didn't stop down far enough. I had to cut the springs short two times (to gain some tension) and then I replaced the springs with one taken from an old broken K-mount prime. The problem is this:
Click to open a short video. In the beginning of the video the lever is jammed up half way. Then, eventually, it gets stuck again. This causes inconsistent exposures (overexposure) randomly. It also causes K-1 to lose track of the aperture on top lcd.

No I do not say FF is best solution for everything as it has wrong aspect ratio to begin with. My point of view is that Pentax *excels* at base ISO imaging. Therefore:
1) Sell all crop gear
2) For tripod (or otherwise slow paced shooting), get used K-1 MK1 and few suitable FF-lenses
3) For anything else, switch to mirrorless
Has it been proven/hinted by a 3rd party that K-3 MK3 improves AF (tracking)? And IF it does, with what lenses? How will the old screw/SDM drives respond? What are the other reasons to buy the MK3? Better IQ? Sure bet against K-3 MK2, not so sure against KP. KP pulled quite a stunt with its base ISO IQ.
