Why don't Japanese vote with their Yen for their favorite camera brand (Pentax) - ?

The Q was a fully featured mirrorless system except for the tiny senor that limited it from having a future. Had they put the effort they put on Q on a competetive system with larger sensor it had a greater chance of it still being produced. Leading to a bigger market share and a larger R&D dep that could support both DSLR and mirrorless. To make a mirrorless system with a larger sensor than in the Q would not take much more resources. And if they used an APS-C sensor it would have been alot more synergies with development of DSLRs.

As I said mirrorless is not only for existing users, it is also for getting new users to the brand. Pentax could have offered a lot of USP other than a tiny sensor.
Q was released in 2011 so the development started long before that. But I agree that the Hoya takeover may have affected Pentax mirrorless venture, and may be a reason for ending up with Q.
That Pentax would not succed with Q was pretty clear from the start.

Pentax is a DSLR brand now as they no longer have resouced to put on anything else. But in 2011 both Ricon and Pentax where also mirrorless brands. But they both put their resources on niche systems that has little chance of being competetive for the future.

If you set auto power off to 1 min, it will take you one minute to find out. ;)

A fully featured mirrorless system would not only been for existing Pentax users. It would also have been for getting new users to the brand.
It they had come with a mirrorless system that many users wanted, they could have taken a big part of Fujis market share, as Fuji came out with mirrorless after Pentax.

2011 when Pentax released Q would have been a good year to have released a larger sensor mirrorless system as it were before Fuji had a mirrorless system, before Sony had FF mirrorless and before many of the mirrorless systems were high performers..
It might not have taken that much effort for Pentax to come out with a competitive system.

But instead they tried to protect their existing market share. Which in the end probably led to them losing market share, to where they are today.

Avoiding cannibalization too much may also be a big risk as it mean you may end up with too niche products and you give up the market to you competitors.
Like when Pentax chose to make their mirrorless system the small sensor Q, to protect the K-mount.

That gave room for Fuji on the mirrorless segment.

My first lens comparison shots - 18-55 kit lens vs. 50mm m-50mm macro lens

If comparing lenses you normally want to compare multiple apertures. From wide open to f/11.
On APS-C cameras many lenses perform best on larger aperture than f/11, but which aperture that it performs best will vary from lens to lens.

Also using base iSO is preferred, so noise or noise reduction does not limit IQ.
It is also good to use a tripod to get the same framing and metering on all the shots and you do not risk getting camera shake.

Used Alternative to the K-30

I would take 2-3 batteries for K1, and if I use a backup camera using the same type of battery I probably not take any more.
If I had a K30/K50 as a backup I would take 2-3 batteries for it too.

So using two types of batteries it definitely adds to the weight. Plus the need for another charger if it is more than a weekend or if I know I will capture a lot of shots.

k1 ii - minimum shutter speed in AV mode?

It is a little strange that KP have the option of (manual setting) minimum shutter speed for auto ISO, but not K1 II released after KP.

Yeah, that is true. Just shows how long it's been since I used it.
Nowadays I kind of automatically switch to LV for manual focus.

The point is as a backup camera for K1 you may not need any extra battery for K7/K5 series cameras. You can use the same batteries you have for K1.
For K30/K50 you need extra batteries as they use a different battery. So in the end the weight of using K7/K5 as a backup for K1 is neglectible from using K30/K50.

The manual focus method I like best so far on digital cameras is the extract edge focus peaking that Ricoh introduced in their recent cameras.
Using focus confirmation on old vintage lenses has the disadvantage of only working with the central AF point only.

The extract edge function together with the tiltable screen makes it a joy to use KP for manual focus.

Contax AX Approach: Modern Version. Is it possible?

On a Pentax DSLR it might not be much difference in mass as the whole SR mechanism with the sensor has to be moving. At least if wanting to keep image stabilization. Together with the OVF, mirror and shutter just like on Contax AX.

On a mirrorless camera without sensor stabilisation it could be done much lighter, but it would still add a lot to the size of the body.

But the main problem IMO with a moving sensor for focus is that it have to extend very long if you want full focus throw on lenses.
So for practcal reason it is not a concept you can uise for continous AF unless you add AF to the lens too.
Only for fine tuning focus on pre focused lenses. But on mirrorless it is so easy to focus manually anyway so I do not see much point in this.

The problem of a design like this is the complexity that would lead to a very high price tag. Would you be interested to get a K1 II with this added if you had to pay $6000 for it?
The price may end up even more expensive as small number of customers would be interested by it. So the R&D cost may add a huge amount of cost on each unit.

It may have made some point back in the days when manual focus lenses where still manufactured. But to release a very expensive camera today optimized for manual focus lenses just do not make much sense.

I was thinking of the refresh they have done on older screw drive lenses over the years. Like DA & FA limited, FA 35, DA 10-17 , DFA 100 macro...
Where they made smaller updates and kept the optical formula.

You might be able to get hold of a KP at a reasonable price. It is a really great camera.

For me KP is probably the best compromise of any DSLR Pentax ever made.

focal lengths and their best uses?

IMO the best images can be when going against tradition. So try to be a bit creative and you may capture more interesting images.
Like using telephoto or medium zooms for landscape, wide angle for portraits, or fish-eye for sports.

Sometimes it is best to limit yourself to just one lens and then try to capture all sorts of images with it. Then you may discover something new.

The battery in the flagships is definitely heavier, but it has much higher capacity too.
And if your backup camera use the same battery as your main camera, you might even save some weight as you do not have to bring two types of batteries and mayby also two changers.

Yeah right. Much bigger and heavier...

K7/K5 is 130.5 x 96.5 x 72.5 mm. 660-670 g
K30 is 130 x 97 x 71 mm, 650 g
K50 is 129 x 96.5 x 70 mm, 650 g

But the K30 has that overhanging flash housing that add volume to the body.

If you want a really cheap camera check K7. It is an underrated camera, but The Samsung sensor can produce some stunning images.
K7 can usually be found very cheap and it feels like a much more modern camera than it is (except for low light sensor performace).
If you need high iso perframce you may have to get K5 or newer cameras.

And I belive the K7/K5 series cameras are slightly smaller than K30.

To hood or not to hood?

The only times I don't use a lens hood is if I lost it or forgot to bring it.
Most lens hoods can be stored reversed on the lens, so it is not like they take up a lot of space.

The problem with Pentax is their limited resources, so releasing a brand new products may take 3-5 years.
And the max capacity they have is working on 1-2 cameras and maybe 2-4 lenses at the same time, which means a camera released every second year and 1-2 lenses a year.

Which is why they often refresh old lenses. It take a lot less resources and can be done in a couple of month.

Software corrected lenses a trend?

Any camera manufacturer can implement a lot of things on cameras when used with third party lenses to make images look bad without having to use lens correction.
Like always over expose images several stops. Use image stabilization to add blur, introduce a long delay before the shot is captured. Always make the shots out of focus when using AF.
The sky is the limit.

But it will not take long before customers realize what the manufacturer are doing, and it will most likely hurt sales for that manufacturer.

Aren't the cars quite close packed together? Then you might need a UWA.
IMO the exaggerated perspective being close with UWA lenses can be nice for cars too.

I do not know many that switch system with every camera they buy. If you buy into a system you tend to hold on to it for some time.
So many users buy into the "safest" system they feel they can develop with. Even though they may like another brand more for other reasons.

There are not that many Pentax cameras to buy. The only camera released between KP (2017) and K3 III (2021) was K1 II, and existing K1 users could upgrade their cameras to K1 II.
Buying into a camera system is a long term investment, and they may not feel confident it what Pentax brand may offer for the future.

But Japan is still Pentax strongest market, and I believe they nowadays sell more cameras in Japan than Europe and US combined.
