K5 ME Viewfinder Cap

Wear a baseball cap for your shoot and when you are ready to open the shutter, take the baseball cap off of your head and put it over the top of the camera. Use a baseball cap that is a solid dark color, no mesh.

The generic AA adapter is so cheap, only $4, you should get one anyway, just in case.

Better still -
Get two and use one to make an A/C power supply. Very easy mod. I did it, and it works well.

Were they my lenses, I would not lubricate them. I don't know what lube is safe to use (if any) or how to apply it. I would just use them and see if they smoothed out.

External Flash K30 malfunction

I have a third party flash that works fine with my K200D, but will not work in P-TTL mode with my K-R. I emailed the mfg of the flash asking about this and was told that Pentax has changed the electronic signals that the camera uses to communicate with the flash, starting with the K-X and that the flash will not work with newer models. Some of the lesser flash makers don't show this in their spec sheets. Some flashes can be updated, like the Metz, and Sigma, I believe. You can search the net and see if you can find an update for your flash, but I will be very surprised if you find an update for Bell & Howell.

Here are some photos of a K200. It is similar to your camera. There is a screw that must be removed from the battery compartment.
If the button is stuck, you can free it up from the inside. If the switch has failed, you will need to order a new one from Pentax parts.

I don't know if you will be able to repair this head properly until you find out what kind of oil they use. Different types of fluid require different types of seal material. I ounce repaired an automobile where the owner mistakenly added motor oil to the brake master cylinder. The rubber seals swelled and became as soft as Jello. The brake system had to be flushed clean and all rubber seals had to be replaced, because the brake seals were not made to work with motor oil. Can you replace the seals in this head? Clean everything that the oil touches with lighter fluid and then again with alcohol. If you can not find out what oil they use, silicone oil is less reactive than most oils. Automotive power steering fluid is another possible candidate. There is also hydraulic jack oil (available at auto parts stores), but I have no idea what kind of oil is used for hydraulic jacks. Maybe Google could help you here.

top lcd display and viewfinder output

It sounds like your top LCD is not making proper contact with the main board. Does the top LCD change if you change some settings on the camera, or is it stuck in only one pattern? If it is stuck, then I think it my be lost, but if it changes then it might not be getting the proper signal from the main board. You could try to open it up and see. There is a ribbon connector under the LCD to check. Here is a pic of a similar camera (K200D).

If 'Worst Buy" would start carrying Pentax, I would actually go there just to handle and see the new DSLRs. I might even buy something, who knows. I won't buy anything there now, as I won't even enter their store.

I took a screwdriver to broken Sigma 70-300 zoom (an older one). One of the inner lens groups made a nice loupe. Not sure it was fun, more frustrating than fun, but it was interesting.

My DL has the same problem as yours. Easy solution is to buy Eneloop batteries and a good charger for the batteries.

The crack near the mode dial will hurt the value. List it for 99 cents opening bid and let it go. Add a fair shipping charge that you will not lose money on. Don't expect much money, maybe $30. Or as Paul says 'keep it for special projects'.

You forgot in-camera image stabilization. The Nikon uses in-lens stabilization. Are the Nikon fast wide angle lenses stabilized?

I don't know if this is your problem. I have a third party pTTL flash that works fine with my K200D, but doesn't work with my K-R. Seems Pentax changed the electronic settings in the newer cameras. You could contact Metz and see if there is a firmware update for your flash.

K5 flash shoe just came out!!! HELP!!!!!!!

Perhaps. It depends on how careful you are when you reassemble the camera. I got some Silicone spray lube and sprayed some of the lube into the plastic cap that came with the Silicone can (spray away from your open camera to keep overspray mist away from all the camera internals). I then used a toothpick and dipped it into the cap and applied a small amount of the liquid to the the seal areas before reassembly. That allowed the top cover to slide down easily. I believe that the seals are still intact, but I don't push it. I don't clean a camera with a garden hose. The camera has been in a light rain and also in the snow since the repair, no problems.

I have several Pentax 18-55 lenses. Type I, type II, and the WR. The sharpest one of the bunch is the type II. I wish the WR kit lens was better, but I'm stuck with it now.

Smashed distance scale lens

I don't own this lens, but I would think that it would affect the WR of the lens. I do own the WR kit lens, 18-55. The Pentax kit lens is fine as kit lenses go, but from the pics that I've seen, the 16-50 is a better lens.
Are you afraid that the IQ of your photos would go down by switching lenses? I would rather have the 16-50 and just put tape over the broken area.
Replace the tape as it wears. Or send it to Pentax service. Or PM me, and we can work out a trade.
