Lee, How fast is the Z5 to turn on compared to the D750? Does the Z5 have a brief time where it needs to 'boot' before its functional or is it instant on?

Too much mocking tone here being cleverly masked as humor. Of course anyone can come back and claim they were trying to inject humor to cover their behinds to avoid offense. Maybe they were and maybe they werent. But the back and forth from 'sides' is getting tiring to see on this flip screen debate.

Of course we have cliques here who back each other. That's fine (it is what it is). But if we could all stop trying to mock either other that would be great.

I've been thinking back at the things said on here (including by myself) and I'm not all pleased with it. A large portion of it wouldn't be said in person, I'm convinced. I think we've largely lost civility yet don't realize it. I'm sure someone will be around to form an apologetic for this poor behavior soon. But it's there. Let's not forget there is a person at the end of the keyboard.

I'm glad someone made it click for you, I was trying to explain that in so many words. I knew you had to speak German natively as I see this quite often coming from German speakers.

But you inadvertently taught me something - now I know why the confusion between words for Germans. One word with both meanings for you guys. :)

Ah yes good catch. I did mean center not corner. Nikon is in another higher level above the Pentax lens. Also, like you said another level in price. But that's it, as far as I'm concerned in image quality.

But like I said, I wouldn't want to use the 1.4 or the 1.2 lenses due to size and weight. That little S 1.8 is goldilocks 50mm imo.

That's really impressive performance out of a 2.99 x 3.41" / 76 x 86.5 mm and 14.64 oz / 415 g sized lens priced at 500 USD.

I'd rather have the Nikon lens if all of them worked on any camera. It doesn't matter how well a lens performs if its so cumbersome that I don't want to use it. The S lens isn't so bulky and is wonderfully sharp and pleasing. Definitely a winner.

It's all moot if you're set on one system or the other though.

That said the 50 1.2 is the 'competition' for this DFA lens. Even though its a stop faster. So it's difficult to compare.

Heres the pentax lens:

here is the nikon lens:

It looks like the Nikon is sharper on the edges than the Pentax is in the corner. But, again, none of this matters if you're deadset on using Nikon or Pentax as someone is more likely to use native lenses on the Nikon and one also cannot use the Nikon on the Pentax. Two different systems.

So there you sit, at the kitchen table, not much to go out for...go crazy with macro and bracketed HDR (Photomatix for Linux) as well as a bit of PP courtesy of Gimp/GMIC

But thank you for answering. They're really nice.

Yeah they were nice. Shopping malls in my area used to have a smaller bookstore chain known as Waldenbooks that I enjoyed too. And another, larger bookstore that was local to the nearby city that had the most thorough magazine assortment I've ever seen. It was especially a treat to go there to see those, before the internet became common, and get a taste of other regions.

I hope you got more out of the conversation than that. I did spend time beyond the forum getting info for you. There isn't any provable conspiracy that lens designers are lazy, not trying, or are trying to deceive the public. Just design constraints from putting physical size of the lenses higher on the priority list.

True but optically speaking, I think DSLR lenses can keep up nicely. The latest Star Pentax lenses are quality.

That said, once you factor in size and weight it becomes another story, as I mentioned. And it becomes difficult physically to go below f/1.4 it seems on DSLRs where as with a larger mount diameter and shorter flange, we'll see the addition of much faster glass (at the expense of size, weight, and price!).

But how many really need sub f/1.4 glass? It becomes a niche within a niche for most imo.

Price, as you also mention, is the other big factor. Even if I could warrant 8 grand for a 58 f/0.95 I'm not sure I'd buy it. The difference between it and the photos at f/1.2 or f/1.4 are fairly minimal. And it becomes more difficult to focus at such shallow depths. Seems more like status symbol lens for most applications.

I want to see more lenses like the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 lens. It's as small and light as a DSLR 70-200 f/4 style lens but a stop faster.

Maybe something such as a 50-105 f/2.0 would be nice. I hope lens makers get more creative with their designs, taking functionality and dimensions in mind.

Does The Future Of Non-Smartphone Photography Lie In "Specialization"?

Reasonable view, I think. Yet I see the other side happening. Many people don't seem to want the complexity of a proper camera. They just want the shot.

One example, I have a friend who got into DSLRs a decade ago with me (he actually is the one that mentioned Pentax to me-- it was his fault ). He ended up buying a Canon though way back because he found it at a bigbox store on discount (boo). Later he upgraded to a better Canon body and more lenses. Was eyeballing a 6d a few years back. But he never went for it.

Today he just uses his smartphone.

I think the proper camera is too big and bulky for him now. He can pull out his phone from a pocket, take a picture, and move on. Easily tag and send the photos to people. It's all in one.

That said, I always get compliments on my camera () for taking such good pictures from family when they see my shots versus same events when they tried to capture it with their phones. Having a sensor the size of montana, compared to the tiny biscuit in your phone, and proper optics might be a part of that. Plus a decade of experience in shooting and post processing...

Not sure what part of that is the photographer and what part of that is simply having a better capture device though.

But none of them want to learn how to use the DSLR. Still happy with their smartphones.

Over twenty years ago I pondered buying Amazon shares, but decided not to because they were just a bookstore and who is going to buy books from them when Barnes and Noble are everywhere?

Try not to ruminate too much in hindsight. It will eat you alive!

They were in talks a year or more ago about creating a proper DAM. I wonder if that's still on the menu? I'm trying to stay away from renting software too.

Smartphones have improved greatly over the past decade, but they still don't outclass proper cameras in a number of ways. And most of those ways should never be outdone as long as Smartphone manufacturers continue to use ultra tiny sensors and fairly simple optics.

Plus having a viewfinder (be it analog or digital) is very beneficial in several applications.

As 'vector' stated, ILCs have always been niche. We just had a wave of people 10 to 12 years ago that jumped on board who were never really enthusiastic about photography as an art. It was more capturing their family experiences and/or to use as a status symbol of owning a 'professional' big camera.

Now that smartphones tend to take both groups, we're back to the people who were interested in the art or just prefer the formfactor who use ILCs.

I'll be interested in watching how the larger market functions with Pentax settling into DSLRs only. Too many unknowns to make any realistic claims right now.

I've found agonizing over the pros and cons is helpful though in not spending a lot of money needlessly/impulsively. I usually wait awhile before buying something I think I want, just to see if the honeymoon dies down. If I still want it, then I'll hunt it down.

A number of times I have wanted something, waited, then realized I didn't. Saved money, time, and hassle (trying to return or resell).
