Thanks for the offer of help but I will have to go down my own path on this. I am dealing with a "not normal" photographic requirement.

This is where my lack of knowledge shows. I will be using a wireless flash unit operated from the hot shoe. But I need an input from the IR motion sensor to trigger the shutter. I think I should have said the cable release port (which the K-01 does not have).

I have Pentax K10D that is not getting used. I was thinking of selling it but I now have a need for a full spectrum body. I need to hook it up to an IR motion sensor and 940 nm flash so I need to use a body with the necessaery DC-in socket (which, unfortunately the K-01 does not have, otherwise I would be looking at the full spectrum K-01 which is currently on the market place). I would like to get the work done in Australia. I could get either the K10D converted or a K30 that I was planning to use for wildlife photography with an an IR motion sensor and normal flash.

First, yes, that Canon did handle the flare well.

Second - in reply to you both - my wife and I have had our four vaccines. We are going on a short overseas trip in about 2 weeks and were seeing the doctor for our cholera shots. We mentioned Covid and he said he had had the four vaccines too and he still got it and was (note, Richard) as sick as a dog. When we said we had been lucky he said, no, you have probably had it and you just don't know. You can't pick who it will really hit. But because my wife has a suppressed auto-immune system he prescribed the Covid anti-viral to be carried just in case.

Nice shot. One nested in a scrappy little shrub next to our house last summer. It was a very basic little hammock made mostly of cobwebs. One young one raised. Maybe they will nest in your garden too.

Yes, they do look good. I'm with pjv on this - you can't just say teleconverters are not worth using. It depends on the teleconverter, the lens and the user. Nexy time someone is doing a blanket condemnation of teleconverters just post one of these images and say "My cat begs to differ." :)

So the SLR is doomed. Just like Pentax was doomed. Only now Pentax won't be doomed because it will be the last surviving SLR. I am still trying to figure that out.

How to turn on focus confirmation on a K30

It was. I knew there was a setting to use manual lenses (I set it on my K-3 years ago) but I got lost in the K-30 menus and couldn't find it, so I tried a reset - which didn't help. Thanks to you, I got to the right place and fixed it. My K-3 manual might have helped but it was out the bush on the farm (with the K-3) and I was in Toowoomba (70 miles away). I am back in the bush now and I downloaded the K-30 manual tonight. But using a 300 page manual on a computer is a challenge too.

Thank you for that. Now it behaves as I expected it to.

Thanks also to the others who took an interest. I couldn't use catch-in-fcus on a camera trap but I will have to pre-focus on the spot where I expect the PIR trigger to be activated. I will be using the SMC Takumar 28/f3.5 set at f8 to give me a good DOF. All nicely planned but we will se what happens in the real world!

How to turn on focus confirmation on a K30

Short story - I just acquired a K30 with aperture failure and no battery or charger (and no manual) - for the princely sum of AUD 135 (posted). For AUD$5 I picked up a AA battery holder, did the aperture shock routine (rapid fire) and the aperture works perfectly again (for now). Not that it matters. I bought the K30 to use in a DSLR camera trap with a passive IR trigger that I am putting together. It will be a manual lens affair obviously.

I have gone through the settings looking for an answer to my questions and drawn a blank. So...

My first question is: If I put an auto lens on the body, SR is ON. If I put a manual lens on, it shows SR as OFF. How do I turn on SR so that is on with a manual lens?? I think I must be missing something in the settings.

My second question is: I cannot get a focus confirmation hexagon or "beep". Any suggestions as to what I might be missing in the settings?

I have done a reset. Makes no difference. Software is ver.1 so I will update that in the next couple of days.

I know I can get the manual off the net but when you have the best brains in the world on tap, I thought I would ask in case I have missed something obvious. I know that since I will be using the camera in manual mode and I won't need SR for the camera trap but focus confirmation would be handy.

is there any cheap,SR compatible 100-400 lens?

If you want autofocus I think the only other option that is almost in your range is the Sigma 170-500 or 150-500. Either of them might meet your price point. The Pentax 55-300 used with the 1.4 tele-converter would give you an effective range of 77-420 but your maximum aperture will be about f8 at the short end and f9 at the long end. You would need to have good light or be prepared for slow shutter speeds. On the other hand, if you are happy with manual focus, then any lens that covers the 100-400 range might be OK. Remember that Pentax has in-body SR. It is independent of the lens.

Abstract Pale-Headed Rosella

Nice shot. We get more of those than of the Eastern Rosellas out here. I think the Pale-headed Rosella has the most elegant colour scheme of all the rosellas. Incidentally, before Inglewood Shire was amalgamated into Goondiwindi Region, the Pale-headed Rosella was our "official" bird. (A piece of trivia you didn't need to know).
