Buy K-1 on sale? or wait for possible K-1 II sale? or maybe new FF next year?

Just 2 1/2 years ago a K-1 was ridiculously awesome. Now we’re debating the merits of whether and when to buy one of theoretically 3 FF choices at 3 prices between now and 6 months from now. And plotting money tactics for lenses.

Buy the K-1. Use it now. Buy the 70-200/4 partly with the savings. Swap for the K-1ll (or the new one) In about a year. :D

+1 to this entire response - except I keep my 28~105 as my one-lens solution with KP.

I bought an LX under similar circumstances. Sent a note to the ostensible owner; he responded and I sent the film on. He had hand loaded bulk film and had traded in the LX on a 5D. Both he and the shop forgot to check. The shop just put the camera in the Pentax case with the CLA Details from a year prior and all the other goodies. I got lucky and bought the camera the next day.

I read a list last night of “Ten Things the Smart Phone Has Obsoleted in Just Ten Years”.

#6 was a separate camera.

“Who needs a big, expensive, heavy, complicated camera that you have to remember to bring with you when your phone is already in your pocket?” - and “It probably takes better pictures than you do with a separate camera anyway”. Specific reference made to recent advancements in sensor, optics and processing.

I still hate the ergonomics of a phone though.

* Pay Phones, Voice Calls (Text Messages), Long Distance Calls, Maps, Phone Books, Address Books, Flashlights are the other ones I remember.

Worth of Getting FA-1W or FC-1 Finder for LX?

1. Change the viewfinder to the FA-1 or FA-1W when you need a hotshoe.
2. Use the flash bracket, battery attachment and the AF400T Flash and 4P cord to Sync Socket with the Action Finder.

Your ocular correction needs might make one choice sub-optimal and the other expensive.

It’s easier to keep a moving subject in the view while pulling focus. I don’t put my eye against the viewfinder. I look into it from a fraction away.

I have both. I need neither. I use the FB-1 / FC-1 combo for fast shooting situations with a motor or winder. I look into it rather than through it - more like looking into a window than through a viewfinder. I use significant eye relief (distance) when using it except when viewing information in the frame margin.

I suspect only people who collect things themselves will actually understand the impetus to acquire a collection such as this. The pleasure lies in the pursuit of the rare, the exemplary condition, finding something passed by when it was new or made before one was even born, the detailed knowledge gained over years of study. A collector will be known by that which he chose not to acquire rather than that which he did acquire.

Collectors who are able often donate their collections to museums so a life’s work of collecting is curated and preserved - the work is the gift rather than the actual collection. A fine collection broken up often ends up in others’ collections.

46 min Interview with Ricoh's Mr. Baus (in German) from Photokina 2018

I originally wrote Ricoh did some experimenting a few years ago with features (like the LED’s) they ended up using in later cameras. Even DPR complimented the IQ, and they generally liked the camera (even if they panned the LED’s and had trouble with the 4-Way Controller).

Until the KP I travelled with my silver K-S1 and pancakes that I bought here for $75. Nice little camera.

K-1 changed everything, ;)

See my post above. They were supposed to be for hand held selfies. Seriously. I don’t think it had a flippable monitor, so I don’t know how selfies are supposed to work. But they learned about LED’s.

The designers were supposedly the hippest of hip young designers.

But it’s all ancient history now. Ricoh is designing great cameras and lenses. Let’s talk about the future.

Alas, Pentax buyers are old men who care about things like image quality, and how the camera feels in their hands, not little green lights. Pentax DID use what they learned about LED’s though, which was my original point. The used lots from the K-01 IBIS and probably more than we know from Q.

The above was the marketing response after having been caught* in the embarrassing design flaw. The LED’s were a flashy feature, intended to appeal to young phone users, to entice them to try an SLR. They could have been placed anywhere else on the camera body to achieve their supposed function, but the designers**chose the handgrip.

* I have personal communication from a member of the first group to see the finished production prototype K-S1. The design team running the focus meeting was reportedly stunned to silence by this person’s observation that the LED’s were covered when actually holding the camera. They reportedly hadn’t thought of it.
** As I recall, much of the Camera design was outsourced to the Japanese office of a California industrial design company. The design brief was a camera designed to appeal to first-time dSLR buyers. As I recall, RIcoh Imaging AMERICAS had a strong hand in the design brief and selection of the designers.

I note Pentax cameras are now designed in-house.

To draw attention, Pentax sometimes experiments with a gimmicky feature on an otherwise competent camera, thus giving Pentax critics a perfect hook to dismiss the product. The LED’s were a learning experiment (see K-1 external lighting) but putting them in the hand grip where they are covered when holding the camera was a hilarious oversight by the California design team. Similar observations can be made about K-01 (and Nikon Df). OTOH the KP handgrips are actually clever and useful - but they get no credit for them.

When I was young my parents didn’t have a Garbage Disposal in the sink but they had a Trash Can under it. We wrapped garbage in yesterday’s newspaper on the corner of the sink and burned it in the brick garbage pit behind the house. Everyone had one of those. We put trash in the galvanized steel trash can in the alley and the trash men picked up the trash cans and dumped them in a trash truck twice a week.

Eventually the city prohibited burning garbage since it polluted the air and attracted rodents. Then they stopped emptying trash cans into the trash trucks, so many people installed garbage disposals and everyone started bagging their trash. Others just put everything in plastic trash bags and left them at the curb. We had to stop burning leaves too. They also went in plastic trash bags.

Now plastic trash bags aren’t allowed, we have wheeled trash containers, and the trash is dumped in a truck again. We have paper Yard Waste bags that cost $2.50 each. We don’t have Trash Men any more though. We have one Refuse Handler who drives the truck that dumps the wheeled container and picks up the Yard Waste bags. . We are encouraged to shred our leaves and food waste and compost our shreddings instead of buying the bags. We are obliged to drive our separated recyclables to the (trash dump) Recycling Center and carefully dump them in the correct containers.

The Recycling Center is clearly posted - NO TRASH.
