Pentax 645Z replacement?

This would be awesome but they'll leave some of their best lenses behind. I might be tempted to buy one more DSLR.

Pentax 645Z replacement?

I was referring to the legacy lenses in Pentax's new lens lineup. So, you are suggesting that Pentax does not listen to its customers, whether that be folks on a forum or Pentax's contract professionals or any type of customer? I mean, that is actually very plausible in explaining Pentax's behavior. If they are truly listening to their customers, what are they hearing more of 1.) your lens lineup is fine, 2.) your lens lineup needs updating? This assumes Pentax's medium format line will be a viable product group going forward.

Pentax 645Z replacement?

For one thing, the market is smaller. Costs are higher to build and the potential for sales smaller. A few short years ago, prices were well north of $20,000 for most DMFs. Pentax was instrumental in getting the ball rolling downhill. Fujifilm and Hasselblad came in later and took it even further. To me, FF is constraining. I think more folks will eventually come to that same conclusion.

Pentax 645Z replacement?

I agree. The new lenses are fabulous but, if Pentax keeps getting feedback from the field that the legacy lenses are just fine (I do not hold that opinion), what motivates them to allocate scarce resources to new lenses?

A newer model will not be priced at $5k. If that is your price point, no sense in waiting. The newest chip from Sony is a 100 MP version sure to be priced above the original pricing of the Z. They could release a 50 MP mirrorless but Pentax has shown no inkling of considering mirrorless.

"Upgrading" decision, Pentax 645Z or Nikon D850(810)

No doubt the D850 is one heck of a FF camera. You'll get more resolution and DR out of the Pentax. Keep in mind you would be working with a 3:2 aspect ratio. I saw a review where someone claimed the D850 is the best wildlife camera they've ever shot. Ignoring the hyperbole for a minute, the D850 is a versatile machine. You would have hundreds of lenses, new and old, to choose from.

Bye bye GFX - back to 645z

I thought I read somewhere that the MTF of the 32-64 @ 64mm was extremely close to the MTF of 63mm prime. I've been trying to find the Fuji GFX and the 32-64 in stock at the same time which hasn't been in the cards yet so I have been waiting patiently. The images I have seen of the 32-64 have looked good but I haven't seen every focal length at every aperture in the landscape genre. Have you got any samples posted somewhere?

Spur of the moment purchase - 645Z

All of these lenses are legacy lenses which can be bought new or cheaply on eBay from Japanese dealers used. Some of these designs go back several decades. Can you get good images from them? Sure. But they won't have the sharpness and also have the contrasty rendition out of camera that lenses with modern coatings have. Among the lenses you mention, there is a new updated 35mm they say is better than the older lens and sells for the same MSRP. I have the new 55 & the 28-45 and both are excellent. I bought the 45-85mm, 120 (both A & FA) & 200mm and while I am not kicking them to the curb, I am really hoping Pentax updates them. Fuji is kicking tail with their set of lenses for the GFX 50s. The slow drag Pentax has taken rolling out lenses for their digital MF cameras makes one wonder if a mirrorless version may be on the drawing board.

This is all I care about based on how I use the 645z.

I rarely use the VF, O or E. I mostly use Live View to compose, focus and expose. I do see EVF as "Live View in My Face" without the environmental glare washing out the back LCD. More than 99% of my images are static landscapes so maybe this makes it easier to use LV/EVF.

Post a RAW from one of these "lesser" cameras and let's see if post processing skill has anything to do with the look. Overall, your eyes aren't lying to you (although I am not sure of the remark about "short tele").

All flashes compatible with the 645z can be found on page 66 of the owner's manual. Whether any of them are still manufactured is another story.

Sony Presents New BSI 100MP Medium Format Sensor

I'll buy the first 100 MP MILC that comes down the pike that isn't priced like a Phase One. I thought about Pentax being the first to jump on this sensor but they have been very lax in updating their lens lineup for digital. Hopefully, Fuji has sent a strong message that $4k lenses are not good deals.

How often do you use your D or Z handheld?

Seldom. I use the 28-45 much of the time and together with the 645z, the weight and poor balance prevents me from steadying the camera for tack sharp images. I've had better luck handholding with the 55mm.

Thinking about buying a Fujifilm GFX 50S? Read this first: Digital Photography Review

Actually, the article is about the Fuji GFX 50s but they throw the X1D and 645z under the bus too. I'd like to rush in with counter arguments but I am afraid I'd come across as nothing more than a fanboy. They compare the 44x33 sensors unfavorably to sensors from the D810 & A7r II neither of which I've tested. I rented the A7r II for a weekend but I was actually checking out the Zeiss Batis 25mm mostly. Any thoughts?

For starters, every lens in the current line-up should be upgraded ala 35 & 55. Then match Fuji 23mm lens.

I can't speak to a comparison, but the IQ of a copy of the legacy 120 I bought off eBay from a Japanese dealer is passable but does not match up IQ-wise with the newly released 645 lenses I own, the 28-45 & 55. I would expect the same quality out of the 90mm although this isn't a focal length I would use enough to get 3-4 grand worth of use out of. I use my Canon 5DsR for macro anyway, macro accounting for about 10 per cent of my total output.
