I have a few bobby pins clipped to my camera strap for the moment, but when I upgrade my camera I will likely want to sell this one and want to have it fully functional.

I lost the lens release button for my k-5. Just seems to have fallen out and disappeared. Anyone know if there is a replacement part, or am I doomed to carrying a tiny screwdriver or bobby pin or something to push into there release with me everywhere?

For the record, after months of no word from Ricoh or their repair partners on my warranty submission, I came back to work today to find a brand new copy of the lens waiting for me.

A local store had one of those I was hemming and hawing over. I recently discovered that the store went out of business, I likely missed a chance to pick it up cheap.

Well said, well presented.

I think for a professional who works in a solo workflow, Pentax is viable, but I know a few pros who say that mainly it's about two things: rentals of equipment and perception, that like it or not, the perception of clients (and some shooters) is that Pentax isn't a professional camera and perception is part of getting a job. But here's the big part: in some markets. If you are doing small businesses, craftspeople, headshots, weddings, engagements, babies, etc., it won't matter. Those clients won't care. Hell, my cousin is a professional in that sort of market and she was entirely tickled to see me with a Pentax just for variety. (Though I wish i could have borrowed her lenses when we were last together as she had a better kit.)

Nearly all the equipment you could ever need to use exists for Pentax, but you can't just procure a lot of it at a moment's notice for a specific job. Again, this is only applicable to some kinds of shoots, but it is a limitation. Wish we had a solution for this, really. Too bad no one with the capital perceives a market. Maybe the K-1 will change some of this as it gains a reputation, but things like its video capability will limit its adoption as LaurenOE notes.

Sticky On/Off Switch

My k-5 has a sticky on/off switch, it can be hard to turn, turning it on can get it momentarily stuck on the aperture setting, etc.

My first impulse is a dot of watch oil on it, but I have seen recommendations to just run water over it, have others had this problem and what have they done to fix it?

You lift the rewind lever to open the back. That's how this camera works, same with my old Minolta.

How to use the Minolta XE-1 / XE

FED-2, test roll with the Jupiter-12 35mm lens. Portra 160. Love the "characterful" color rendering on this lens.

Focus tests just taken. All shots at same distance and focus point (no refocusing between shots).

DA* 55m f/1.4 at f/1.4, DA* 55m f/1.4 at f/2, DA* 55m f/1.4 at f/2.8

I feel the lens is noticeably soft in a focus test at f/1.4, but very sharp at f/2. But here are examples of real-world shots courtesy of my coworker sitting still for a minute:

DA* 55m f/1.4 at f/1.4

DA* 55m f/1.4 at f/2.8

I feel these are harder to find fault with at f/1.4, in fact the shot at f/2.8 is slightly soft because it was 1/20th of a second handheld whereas the f/1.4 is 2 full stops faster and therefore more usable. The DOF is really shallow at f/1.4, providing nice separation if you get the right portion of the subject in focus. It's sharp at f/2 and you can cut yourself on it from 2.8, I didn't see any difference between f2.8 and f11 in an earlier test.

For comparison's sake, here's the DA 50mm f/1.8:

DA 50m f/1.8 at f/1.8, DA 50m f/1.8 at f/2.0, DA 50m f/1.8 at f/2.8

The 50mm is a great lens for the money but it remains soft at f2.8.

I just bought my DA* 55, got it Monday, and have been very pleased with it. I tend to regret big purchases but have had zero cause to regret this lens, even though it struggles a bit with autofocus in low light and in high contrast situations.

For myself, I think an 85mm is too long for good portrait work, I already have to stand a long way away from my subject to get full body with the 55mm, and on a crop frame the 55mm is (roughly) the equivalent of 85mm full frame. That said, i haven't used the 85 1.4. It would be interesting to see focus test results at 1.4 with it, but I suspect they would be at least similar to these -- wide open most lenses just aren't as sharp as they are stopped down a bit.

Hope this helps.

Everett, WA. Kodak TMax 100, Zeiss-Ikon Contessa, shot in 2013 and developed in 2016, film unsurprisingly went bad in an interesting way in the meantime.

Seattle, WA. Kodak TMax 100, Zeiss-Ikon Contessa, shot in 2014 and developed in 2016.

Really nice work. I love Delta 3200, and "pulling" it really gets great results like this. (Yes, i know it's really 1000.)
