My Pentax wifi remote software

Ron, yesterday I checked on properties to see what my PC made of the Wifi link. It said 802.11n 65Mbits/sec. how the PC came up with the 65 value I do not know as no file had been transferred, so I expect it is some evaluation and thus prediction of what to expect. The fact it stays at 11Mbits/sec smells to be like it is sticking to only one channel. That is my guess based on numbers I remember old. To obtain faster performance then multiple channels have to be used. I do not have a strong knowledge of the details of Wifi.

From past experience, we will not be given an explanation from Pentax, Also there is a good possibility that for the 802 Pentax bought in a library and their knowledge/ability to change things may be limited. There may also be a hardware limitation, again I am well outside my comfort zone.

Does the throughput limit of about 1 M/Byte a sec apply to all models of camera. My K-S2 is about that, is the K1 the same? A doubling of performance would make file transfer more liveable.

When I first tested the K-S2, (I assume the K-S1 will be the same). I wanted to see how 'B' would be enebled without a cable. From memory. the IR acts like a toggle, first press to open, second press to close.

Buying old lenses

Good advice from previous posts. In general get lens with an A pin. Makes the camera so much easier to use. Don't always think about the lowest price you can find. Look at the prices of a new near equivalent. Usually a minimum of three times the price, can easily be 10 times the price.

I suggest, keep away from old Sigma lens. Check out the name of the lens, often it is the same lens sold under different names. You will almost certainly buy the odd 'duff' lens. Don't let the experience put you off, haunt Ebay until the lens you are after turn up. Don't try and rush it, if good ones are not there, then so be it. Good luck.

How do you assess lens quality?

The book shelf test , the night scene with tiny bright lights. Play around with enough lens because you have LBA and you end up with the same conclusion. Not certain if it is, great minds think alike ;or the lens arrives, unpack, wonder if it is any good, the alcove bookcase is just 10ft away.

Try looking under the rubber grip of the focus ring. The grub screws to lock the focus mechanism may be there.

AfterShot Pro 3 & Capture One PEF DNG problems

Sorry I don't think I made it clear. My earlier K-S2 shots it will work on. That is the reason I selected DNG to try and get around the problem of supported cameras. It is just after a certain date the program will not work. Luckily faststone does not bother with any of the supported camera stuff. It just works of PEF or DNG as needed.

Update; loaded the latest update release, linux version, and the latest Pentax cameras are NOT supported. Even though the release was 9 months after the release of them K-S2 etc.

Prompted me to try this out on my version AS-2. I have a K-S2 and use DNG, I can process shots upto a certain date and then mysteriously will not after a date. The latest ones, I select the file as usual, then nothing happens; in that the file selection window closes as usual, there is no error message, the program carries on as usual except there is no picture to work on.

Way to fix cracked rubber lens ring on vintage lens ? What is the best way ?

There is the obvious of cutting it cleanly off, then trying evo stik to permanetly put it on. However the smooth metal surface is difficult to stick to. Another solution I have used, and it works. Is to use self amalgamating tape, to give a rubber surface to grip.

Of the 30 year old lens I have a few feel as if they were new. One common feeling I get from the others is that the grease lubricating the focus threads has got very sticky. Have you found the same, especially of the budget price lens of their day. I wonder what these lens would feel like they were relubricated. I shy away from doing it as I have taken some apart and ..... think you know the rest.

[K-S2] How to get a picture of moving object without diplopia or shake?

When you pan the camera the K-S2 senses it and turns SR off automatically. Look in the viewfinding look at the hand symbol and move and once your movement get fast enough the you will see the handsymbol extinguishes.

I would swap iso for a higher shutter speed to sharpen the moving object you are fixed on.

Which batteries do you hate, and why (AA NiMH vs. D-LI90 vs. D-LI109)?

AA NiMH has the BIG disadvantage of not having a high enough voltage. So no matter how much you charge, a camera may reject far too early because it detects the low voltage, even though the battery still contains a big charge.

On the same lines I like Li-ion for it's high capacity and low self dischage, plus high stabel voltage. I would like to have flash units powered by camera batteries for the same reason.

Just loaded, AF.S same as before. Then using my Tamron 70-300mm, I thought the AF.C seemed more twitchy. That is reseeking lock a lot more times than I felt necessary. Could be my imagination, anybody of the same opinion or disagree?

AF: Which Decides.. Camera or Lens?
Posted By fb_penpho

Delboy, AF is a closed loop feedback system. That is the AF sensor in the camera generates an error signal, this causes the camera/lens motor to turn the lens focus in such a direction as to lessen the error. As the image focused on the AF error sensor gets better the error signal gets lower. When the error gets down to an acceptable level, the AF system stops turning the motor. The camera is focused. The AF error system in the camera controls the AF. The lens is merely a component in the feedback loop.

In fact manual focusing is exactly the same process. The Mk 1 eyeball passes the viewfinder image to the brain. The brain determines if the image is acceptable, if not instructs the hand to move the focus to a point where the brain says, yes good enough. The hand movement taking the place of the motor. So a form of AF has been around for a long time.

Which parameters are mode dependent
Posted By fb_penpho

The problem is with Edial mapping when using FULLY manual lens (NO A PIN) and the USER settings.

When using manual lens with A pin, both Edial mappings work. When going to USER, both the Edial settings show up.

Replace the manual lens with a fully manual lens (NO A pin), then the Aperture Edial mapping ends. Not surprising as the aperture is selected by the aperture ring. However when going to USER, the shutter speed Edial mapping which had been available has also ended. This is the bug in V1.10. firmware.

Which parameters are mode dependent

Thought I would set up USER2 on my K-S2 for Flash, this got me thinking what parameters I would set. This followed on to a more fundamental question, what parameters can be manipulated, varied and stored for every picture mode available. What parameters are universal and thus the same and set for all modes. Maybe I have not understood the manual instructions but I do not know the answer. Is there one? All comments appreciated.

I have this lens, and there are many online DoF calculators available. I use them because under extreme conditions the DoF can be VERY small. The calculator will hammer home the point that possibly if the ears are in focus, the lips may be just going out.
