upcoming 60-250mm vs. Canon 70-200mm f/4

I own a 70-200 f/4L non IS and I enjoy it very much. It's sharp wide open and even with a 1.4x TC its still sharp wide open and focuses quickly. Weather sealing doesn't really matter much unless you are shooting it on a 1D anyway. Some days I wish I could merge what Pentax does best with what Canon does best.

I hear ya Ken. I went back and finished a degree last year. I wish it could have been in photography, but being older, had to do what was convenient and what I knew...it's never too late!

Excellent points, Mike. When I went in I didn't even know you could be a photographer. And you're right, advancement in that field was slow...

Thanks, Christine....

A degree will do a lot for you. Along with what Christine mentioned, it will give you a good sound foundation upon which to build your craft. It will put you in contact with people that do this thing for a living. Most college teachers have field experience now a-days. It will increase your 'proper' vocabulary in photography and business so you sound like you know what you are saying. You'd be surprised how important that is today. You'll also get exposure to some business basics if you take some business classes. It'll help you manage your career. Lastly, it gives you a strong resume. You can produce a portfolio I am sure like everyone else, including myself....but with a degree you show you really want this, you are willing to start and finish a major undertaking, and you have more knowledge (at least on paper) than the next guy with a portfolio as good as yours.

...just some more ramblings...there is, for sure, more than one way to get into photography...good luck it is really rewarding to make images you and others are proud of.;)

You might consider going to college and getting a degree also. I might suggest a Bachelor in Fine Arts with photography as the focus. You might also do a minor in business as it will help. You could even consider reversing that and getting a business degree with a minor in photography. Depending on how much HS you have left, get on with the school paper or start one if you haven't already. It may not be what you want to do but the exposure will sure help a lot. (never mind, I just saw you are home schooled)

Read, read, read, and read more. What ever you can get your hands on that deals with understanding exposure, lighting, etc.

See if you can find a local photographer that shoots what you are interested in and ask whether they would allow you to intern.

Research the military, believe it or not. I can't speak for other services, but you can join the Navy, get photography school, and become a photographer while on active duty. You may not find the military appealing but its an option to get some school if college isn't an option.

Dig into good professional forums where you can look at good photos and read what experienced people have to say. PentaxForums is good, but I also am talking about forums for pro wedding shooters, etc. Check out flickr.com. There are a few good groups there where a lot of good photogs and pros mingle.

Just so you know, I am not a pro but have started doing some semi-pro work. I am older and have a full time career. My goals long term are to build a local wedding/event photog business to take full time after retirement.

My Pentax Sponsorship Over...

Because many of us do not live at the financial level where fashion resides, we probably don't realize the impact it has on people down here....it's the same concept in fashion as in cameras...women want what Tyra is wearing, etc...you get the point. Deny it all you want, the masses of people with the disposable income to make high $ purchases think this way.

It's interesting talking about making Pentax a myth and how they could make a D300 for cheap and it wouldn't sell. I agree. Back in the 70's when I was a little kid in grade school, the 'thing' was the "alligator shirt"I had 3 or 4 by the way because I wanted to "fit in"....it was actually a 'croc' by the way but we lovingly called it an alligator shirt....it was made at the time by Izod-Lacoste. Izod was well known for clothing design and LaCoste the name of the French tennis player that invented the idea over his love of crocs. Anyway... without telling the whole five page story... as it happens, no one with logo shits could ever duplicate it though LeTigre tried as did others. Polo probably was the best competition. Well, to sell more, Izod cheaped the shirt out and split from LaCoste...you could by one in K-Mart at one point for cheap. The brand pretty much died as the exclusive crowd went to Polo. As it is now, over the past few years, Lacoste has taken the brand back and re-invented the 'croc shirt' as an icon by inflating the price to about $80 US per shirt and putting them in boutiques and a few high end stores like Nordstroms, etc. Why does this work? Because people want to think they have something expensive. People want status symbols whether you agree or not. The materials and logo really never changed but the price and exclusivity did. And people are buying. Not to mention they have some sponsors such as Andy Roddick in America and I am not sure who elsewhere.

In that Ben is from France, I am sure he is familiar with this brand and story and I am sure there are others.

Yes, and this is why I traded out my gear. I agree Pentax makes a wonderful camera but why work harder to achieve the same result as something you can get easier elsewhere? It increases the keepers and allows you to think about other things while shooting. I hope when I make some $ to spend, I can get a K20 and a few lenses and maintain two systems.

I don't make enough posts (anymore) to be a troll but I chose to leave for Canon because of what I wanted from my camera and so far I am quite happy. I get close to 90% of my bird shots in focus, in flight ones too...and when a teleconverter is attached, I get the same focus speed as my old Sigma 50-500 in my 400L. Its lightening fast AF w/o a tc. I certainly think Pentax makes some great stuff for the artist that doesn't need speed...those shooting wildlife and nature will be somewhat disappointed. I can say that using my old gear did force me to learn more technique which now makes shooting even easier than just added speed. Sorry to disappoint and please don't call me a troll.

Possible US bankruptcy?

The one thing that is a help to many American companies right now is their exposure overseas. The weakening dollar will probably increase exports and also tourism. This will increase tax dollars coming in to the US as well as income. These will all certainly help some with the solution to America's issues including a strengthening of the dollar over time. Most certainly if we can get some fiscally responsible people into Washington and elsewhere.

The simple answer to the question is another question. "What is it that destroys man every time?"

A: Greed. We're all guilty of it.

If we study the rise and fall of the Roman Empire we may find some answers regarding America. (Albeit I hate to say it) Rome was never conquered. It imploded. We are a 'do as I say, not as I do' nation. Fiscally responsible tell us how to manage ourselves personally, yet our government and highest paid bankers and CEO's think they can ignore the principals.

The scientific principal of 'for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction', is quite fitting in every aspect of life. For everything you try to do, something else is offset. This is why 'economic growth' simply cannot continue at the rate it did whilst everyone got greedy. Slower, more metered growth would last much longer but that means less immediate money in the important people's pockets. And those of us less important too.

Personally I think the US needs to avail itself of its many resources. We could supply our own oil from drilling in our own lands if we would pass resolutions allowing us to do so. I am a nature shooter and ALL FOR protecting the environment, but the technology exists to take resources we need with VERY limited environmental impact....the US is too dependent on everyone else and now our dollar is weak. As far as the mortgage crisis goes, we brought that on ourselves. I am an investigator working mortgage and investment fraud and you would not believe the amount of people that got loans that never should have.

I think any major problems the US has coming in the future can be avoided, but wonder if we have the leadership to make the right decisions without regard to their popularity.

K20D--why 14 MP??

Simple. Its about resolution. Digital pictures still don't have the resolution that film has. Slide film is up around 21MP. This is why Canon has a MkIII with 19MP or whatever it is. While film is slowly being replaced as the standard in the industry, we still want its resolution.

I've adjusted the price to $690.00 shipped in the US. I cannot provide insurance over $100 at this price shipped. Even though the K20 is out, this is still a good cam, at an excellent price. Someone must want one.

Still includes grip and accessories. When I say not a mark, I truly mean no marks on this cam.

Hi all.

I have a Sigma EX 1.4x teleconverter for sale. Used it on my Sigma 50-500mm. I had listed this previously for more but am now asking for $105.00 shipped in the US. If you are outside the US, pm me and I'll get you a price based on what it will cost to ship. You really cannot beat this folks, it sells for $190.00 at B&H before shipping. I have nothing left but the K10D and this TC, I need to get it sold!

I also have a Hoya 86mm CP-L (polarizer). I cost me $115 or so. I'd like $65 shipped in the US. Outside the US, email me so I can give you a quote.

Thanks.

PLEASE READ: Warranty Issues with used Pentax's being sold

Companies do not like to honor warranties after an item has been sold because it takes $ out of their pocket. If you could go save $ and still get a warranty, then you have less incentive to buy new. Many states have laws though which make manufacturers honor warranties regardless.

I haven't found a big loss between 8 and 10mp. If you print at 200 dpi you still get a 11.5 - 17.5 or so. Acceptable for prints would probably be 150 dpi although most magazines would like 300dpi which would render you an 8x10 or so w/8mp.
