Help With P-TTL Cord For Pentax

I've sent them two emails now, no response. Look like I either go with Pentax adapters or leave it in the hot shoe.

This is the 2nd cable, I returned the first.

Yup they're in the tight way. While they can be inserted two ways there's only one locking pin/index hole, that accepts only the correct way.

Well after an hour on the phone with Pentax this morning, their solution is that a universal cord made for Pentax and that works with previous models of the 360 flash, will not work with the II. Instead for the new model flash I have to buy the Pentax F adaptor and the 5P cord, even though it has the same contacts as the Vello. Im really starting to regret the purchase of this flash.

Well that's strange. If I put the flash in manual mode, as soon as I half press the shutter the flash switches to TTL or PTTL.? I also coated the pins with some ink I had in the shop to check for contact. The pins are leaving only a "very tiny" scratch where they make contact.

Don't have either in front of me but it seems like I recall the cable shoe having small channels leading up to the pins, which would mean they were recessed. I'll have to check the flash to see if the pins actually extend below the plate. Again as before the problem is exactly the same on the K3II and the K1MII, and as before the non-pttl Youngnu will fire using the cord. So for clarification wouldn't this automatically indicate that the pin is receiving voltage???

Well %^&$%^ contacted another store with live person who swore up and down the Vello OCS-P3 would work with the Pentax AF-360FGZ II, so I bit the 2nd time, and it still won't work!!!!!!! I've checked the measurements on the pins which should be close enough for them to make contact. What I can't tell is if the pins are actually making contact when inserted because there's no way to see in. Slip the flash into the hot shoe on either the K3II or the K1MII it works perfectly. Insert the cord into the mix and there's nothing, acts like its' not even connected.

So my questions to the forum are
1. Is anyone using an Vello OCS-P3 cord with the AF-360FGZ II (not the FGZ, or the FGZ I , but the FGZ II)
2. Is there a menu in the camera or flash that I might be overlooking?
3. Any other suggestions, I'm pulling my hair out on something that should be so simple.

The only time flash and camera communicate is if the flash is in the hot shoe. If I use the cable it's just like turning on the flash not connected to anything. Doesn't read the lens focal length and won't fire.

It will fire a non TTL Youngnu flash, but not the AF360

I guess it could be mislabeled, but the end that attaches to the camera clearly states "P-TTL Cord For Pentax"

The locking mechanism on the camera shoe seems pretty solid. It clicks when it locks. I have another flash I'll try.

Actually just check continuity on all connection points. No open circuits. Only other thing that I can think of is the contacts are in the wrong place?

Just received in a Vello OCS-P3 cord which states it's for P-TTL Cord for Pentax https://www.vellogear.com/product/5632/Vello-OCS_P3-Off_Camera-TTL-Flash-Cor...tax-Cameras-(3') . However when I connect it the the camera hot shoe, and the other end to the flash, nothing happens....no communication whatsoever. Tried it on both the K3II and K1MII. I'm using a new Pentax AF360FGZII. Flash works perfect with either camera when connected direct to hot shoe on either camera. Also tried reconnecting multiple times and verified mounting. Now what.......bad cord??????

The first thing I donít like on my K1 MKII

A little different but still a display issue. With the K1MII I find it annoying that in manual mode, Live View you get a stopped down view, which is really annoying, not to mention mostly impossible when trying to focus manually. The only workaround I've found is rotate the dial to Bulb, focus then rotate back to manual. Any thoughts on where I've missed this in the manual?

Struggling with Noise

Maybe we're the unlucky ones that got the not so good K1MIIs, because two years in I still question if it does as good of job on noise as my K3II, especially at or below ISO 6400.

One thing not mentioned is exposure, are you getting a full data file exposure according to your histogram. In camera noise reduction works to clean the noise in the raw file, but if you under expose then boost in post you're magnifying any noise in the file. The other thing you might try is processing the file first in Pentax DCU5 software, sometimes I've had better success with it.

Moving on to camera settings, in the menu 1 AE metering try the center weighted or spot setting. Menu 2, Dynamic range Settings, Highlight Correction, try auto and Shadow Correction, try setting it to medium. Menu 2, Noise Reduction, you can set High ISO NR to auto, low, medium, or high. Experiment with these to find what works best for you. Again these work on a pixel level to correct the noise before any PP.

AF360FGZ II Flash & P-TTL

I know this but I think I failed to fully comprehend the priority the camera uses when making those changes. ISO seems to be weighted more heavily on choice for increasing exposure then aperture or shutter.

Another of my possible misconception on the flash, assuming it has more power then it really does. Being primarily accustomed to studio lights, I need to shift gears on capabilities.

I did but thanks to some of my false expectations, I think I was hoping for something that apparently isn't possible.

AF360FGZ II Flash & P-TTL

That's what I did with the previous non P-TTL compatible speedlight. Usually setting the exposure by 1-2 stops under then using the speedlight to raise the exposure. However, I had hoped the this flash being compatible would eliminate this step.

Okay I assumed at first that setting the EC on the camera would also update the EC setting on the flash, but in actually use it appears that they are independent of each other.

AF360FGZ II Flash & P-TTL

I wondered about that, but I thought I read somewhere that it needs two variables?? Plus won't it still try to expose for the frame not the subject. IE: say I want to make the background dark/darker then the subject.

AF360FGZ II Flash & P-TTL

I think I know the answer to this, but just to confirm. When I use any of the program modes the K1MII seems to bump the ISO way up rather then boost the flash power. If I put the camera on manual, set the aperture, shutter, and ISO, then it will boost the flash to compensate. I'm assuming this is because on program modes it's attempting to expose for the frame, and not the subject. Or am I missing something?

Using AF360FGZ II Off Camera

I'll probably go with this option in the 3' and 6' length. Most of the time this will be used in a run & gun, situation so using it with a flash bracket and 3' cord should be fine.

Another Pentax flash is out the question at this time. To much invested in studio equipment, and outside work is very minimal. The longer cord might well be an option.

Using AF360FGZ II Off Camera

New flash inbound this week, but I have a question on using it off camera on my K3II and K1MII. The only reason I bought this speedlight is to be able to use all of the features like PTTL, HSS, auto zoom, etc. I'm not finding much in the way of mounting it off camera except with the use of a PTTL cord, that will allow full function. The longest cord I've found is about 3', which would be a little short.

Am I missing something? Are there other solutions, that allow full use of functions?

Have a question for you. I'm looking at Pentax flashes as well, what made you go with the FGZ vs the FGZ II? From what I'm finding good used models in the 360 or 540 newer (II) version aren't that much less then new, and the reviews I've read here on the forum for the older versions aren't that good. I'd be interested in your followup on how well it performs, before I pull the trigger.

Pentax K-1 Mark ii user, feeling frustrated about being stuck with only the kit lens

I've never had an issue with shooting at slower shutter speeds hand held, with the K1MII or the K3II as long as the SR was enabled. For example this was hand held at 1/125. The focus was on the drop in the center.

Or this one hand held at 1/125. That's one of our &*^% mosquitoes on the top bloom.

I have some more even slower, down to the 1/30 range. I guess I'm not understanding the issue.
