Silky Pix

The Pentax-bundled Silkypix gives very good to excellent results.

Feel free to spend some money on one of the RAW developers you've mentioned, but you would do well to at least try the Silkypix you already have. This will allow you to become comfortable with RAW developing as well as develop a workflow you're comfortable with.

Several years ago I read a lot of reviews and bought the full version of Silkypix, which I still use and love. Great color and intuitive interface. Feel free to search out some reviews and comparisons online (Remember, it's Silkypix - one word). A few years ago it was reviewed quite favorably, but things can change, so I've no idea if it is still competitive with other titles.

I think this tripod meets your specs. I have it and I love it.
Giottos U-Pod

My version has the MH1004 ball head, which I feared wouldn't be able to handle my K20d, but it does without difficulty.

Orienting the camera for portrait (sideways orientation) is a bit tricky. I can't use it with the battery grip attached to the camera. The longest lens I have is the Tamron 18-250mm, so I've not really placed any heavy glass on it, nor do I think it could handle it.

B&H Gets my thumbs down review

I agree the OP is being a bit harsh in his criticism of B&H, but he's not criticizing their lack of telepathy, as you put it. He's just peeved about the second-part; the $30 which is probably the cost of administration and placing the banana back on the shelves. I agree that the restocking fee is at least customary (if not reasonable) and certainly B&H seems be playing by the rules they (and most retailers) set. But there certainly are situations where one might expect a retailer to call it an "even exhange" and just swap out one unused item for another of equal value. But the OP probably didn't choose to purchase from B&H for that "No problem, we're on a first-name basis!" type of customer service, because places like that charge a bit more at the register. B&H is an excellent vendor, and the OP probably got a nearly un-beatable price, but he later decided he'd rather have more "forgiving" customer service. Too late, I'm afraid. But if he knows where to find both, I'm sure we'd all be interested.

On another thought, is it possible the $30 was not a re-stocking fee, but reflects a price change that occurred after the OP accidentally messed up his order? This quote makes me wonder: "when I made my purchase both lens were priced the same. " Notice the OP specifies the lenses are the same price at the time he placed his original order. It could be that the OP wanted B&H to honor the earlier price. That's chutzpa.

A Tale Of Two Systems

I agree the Nikon system is quite appealing. But you chose to specify the two systems rather differently. You have selected a 70-300 (VR) zoom for the Nikon system against a 200mm prime for the Pentax. It's not clear why. You could have matched the Pentax 200mm f2.8 with the Nikkor180mm f/2.8D instead. Or you could have chosen from a few k-mount lenses more directly comparable to the 70-300 (like the Tamron AF 70-300 or Pentax 55-300, for example).

My point is that even if BOTH systems were Nikon, it would be reasonable for anyone to prefer one kit over the other. Thus you really haven't presented a basis to choose according to brand.

Also, what is the value to you to have SR in all those k-mount lenses?

Actually, the joke is that the attractive girl makes it impossible to see anything else in the frame: works for auto show girls ("car? what car?"), product models ("laptop? what laptop?") etc.

I'm thankful to have received several expressions of interest over the past couple of days. As stated in my "last call" posted one week ago, the camera was placed on eBay on Tuesday, April 7. There are a couple of new photos, too, including the accessories and box. The camera is truly immaculate, save for some minor dust and dirt I should have cleaned off prior to the photos:

Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions.

Thanks for the bump Nikoloz. FYI everyone: Nikoloz appears to be a super nice guy, we just couldn't settle on shipping arrangements. I hope someone else is able to accommodate his purchases.

This camera goes on eBay this weekend. Last call.

Yes. As much as the 12-24mm appealed to me (just purchased), your assessment of what's not getting much use is what's important. I am just a bit surprised that you use the fish-eye more than the 12-24mm. I certainly believe you, but could you comment on why that is the case?

The DA* zooms are, I think, the best two-lens kit for event shooters. And who could criticize the two primes you're targeting? Really, there isn't a regret in that lineup. I personally have insecurities about selling lenses (what if I need it someday?!), but I really admire a well-thought out, well used kit.

The K10d body is still available. Following up on some questions I've received.
  1. ALL original accessories are inlcuded, including a/v cable, usb cable, users manual, assorted other Pentax paperwork, CD in its original sleeve, viewfinder-eyepiece cover, hotshoe cover, battery charger, power cord, original box (minus the UPC symbol) and interior packaging, etc.

  2. I purchased the camera from in late August 2007. By the way, I've retained the receipt and packing list.

  3. My eBay feedback percentage is 100% for 80 transactions, with glowing feedback for 12 sales. eBay name is in the listing above.

choosing a filter for DA 12-24mm

Congratulations on the new lens. I just purchased a 12-24mm myself. Prodigital threw in a Cokin UV filter with the lens and it went on immediately. Seems nice enough. I'm not very concerned about degrading the optics. Compared to my primes, the front element seemed rather large and not nearly as recessed. Also, I've a four-year old with an uncanny ability to touch things in exactly the worst way possible - always the front element or eyepiece, never the lens barrel or camera body.

Third party batteries (not Pentax OEM) are cheap and plentiful on eBay. Worked out fine for me, and I've read threads indicating similar results for others. Just be certain to buy from a vendor with an excellent feedback rating.

Need adapter for charging battery in UK

You don't say what battery you want to charge.

Most battery chargers (I'm fairly certain the Pentax D-LI50 battery charger for the K10d and K20d, for instance) can handle the different voltage in the UK, so you only need an adapter (not a converter) like this:

AC POWER Travel Adapter Plug UK ENGLAND Type G BS 1363 - eBay (item 190285657909 end time Mar-10-09 20:02:56 PDT)

Just check the label on anything you want to plug in. If it says INPUT: 100-240v or something like that, it'll be fine. The same goes for the transformer on your netbook computer.

A hair dryer is a different story. Almost certainly it cannot handle UK voltage, so you will need a transformer rather than a simple adapter, but they are typically not able to provide enough wattage for a hair dryer! Leave it at home, use one in the hotel, buy one, borrow one, or dry your hair with a towel.

AF 35 f2 or AF50 f1.4

I second this recommendation. For low, light indoor use (in tight spaces, as the OP indicated), this seems like an even better combination of FOV and speed.

I still toy with the idea of selling my FA35 ad buying the Sigma 30/1.4 for exactly that reason. But the FA35 is such a good performer...

Both FA35 and FA50/1.4 or sell for the FA43

Understood, but the framing corresponded as expected (slightly tighter for the 35mm) and the different apparent sizes were too dramatic to be solely the result of viewfinder variations. Besides, I've seen the results of my recent K10D shots - there is far less "foreshortening" on the FA35 shots than I would expect from a 50mm on a film camera. I took a nice photo of my son, semi-reclined with his feet nearest to the lens and his shoulders/arms/hands furthest away. The apparent difference in the depth of the shot was dramatic to my eyes - his upper body seemed much further away than his lower body.

Regarding the DA70 vs the FA77, I've been down that road already in another thread, and it is not an easy decision! I would love to have the compactness, fast-focusing, and less PF of the 70, but the fast f/1.8 of the 77, plus all its supporters and all those photos suggests that it is special.

Regarding the FA43, it just comes down to whether it will be simple and easy to sell my nearly new FA35 and not lose much money, and if I can pick up the FA43 and count on that rebate. If it's a chore to sell, and I lose too much money, I'll keep it and ask for the FA50 for my birthday. I must be crazy to collect all these primes when I could have gotten two DA* zooms and have been done with it!! :o  :(

So how do I unload my FA35?

Both FA35 and FA50/1.4 or sell for the FA43

I've had a breakthrough. :D I've figured out why the FA35 seems wide to me. It IS wide, that is, it renders a lot wider than I anticipated and it is not equivalent to a 50mm lens on my old 35mm ME-Super. I placed my K10d with FA35 next to my dusty, ME-Super with M50mm. I aimed them both at my camera bag and checked the viewfinders. The FA35 captured a slightly tighter frame, but the camera bag appeared significantly farther away and smaller. You might think I'm catching on a little late, since there have been many discussions about "crop factors", FOV, foreshortening, etc. But I never realized how significant these effects are until I experienced them.

I will need a different "normal" lens.

Whether I will get the FA43 or FA50 I do not know. If I go with the FA43, the FA35 will go up for sale. Otherwise I will get the FA50 and keep the FA35. I'm leaning towards the first option, but selling the FA35 will be a bit of a chore and I hate giving up the low light capabilities. Is the FA35 clearly faster and sharper wide open compared to the FA43?

What should I do? :(
