Rumor: Pentax FF Sept 18-23, 2012

I don't disagree.

You just have to consider that Pentax is starting from very very far in those key markets.
As you say, a small share may amount to bigger sales than in Europe; however, to reach that threshold, Pentax WILL have to spend SO MUCH in advertisement that I am not convinced it is going to happen anytime soon.

Guys in India and China buy products that will reinforce their social status, their image.
When you have ad campaigns with Jacky Chan using a Canon, it's hard to fight back. Distribution channels will not change anything in that case. Pentax could have the best camera ever, it still wouldn't sell that well because of lack of image.

In Western markets however, we kind of know it doesn't work completely that way, which is why Pentax is performing a bit better. Making products that have a better price/performance ratio than the competition is something that actually works.

Ricoh has better presence than Pentax, but still lightyears away from the other guys.
Meaning you get to actually see some models, in some shops. Better than "Oh, didn't they go bankrupt?" when asking about Pentax.
You see Canikon & co in ANY shop... With multiple lenses.

I repeat, I am basically not disagreeing with you. I am saying that increasing the distribution channels should come in support of increased communication efforts. Just making the bodies go on the shelves will not help as much as you say, and as it stands NOW, it is wasted effort.
South-East asians/Chinese/Indians are very sensitive to products from Japan and the West, and are also very sensitive to products "carried" by their icons. If you want to have some kind of success without that, you will be limited to a small success. Very small.
Here, buying brand identity as you say isn't so cheap. That's the problem.

Uuhhhh, considering the weak presence of Pentax in South-East Asia, that would be a VERY tall order...
Finding them in Thailand is tough. Singapore? Not there. Same in KL. Cambodia was the first country I saw a shop carrying Pentax...
China? No one cares for Pentax there, I've seen 2 guys with a Pentax in 4 months there, compared to bazillions with Canikon.

Problem is, distribution in Asia is way more problematic: there are few big shops as Fnac (in Europe), or Adorama (in the US).
So you have to cater to A LOT of very small shops, and that's no easy task.

It wouldn't surprise me that Pentax is 5 or 6th in Asia, behind Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and/or Panasonic.
When you see their presence on the shelves, it's no surprise. Pentax is nowhere to be seen.

Last time I paid attention here (Thailand), Ricoh had much more exposure than Pentax.
For Pentax to gain marketshares, I can't begin to imagine the investment in both money and time needed. Even with the backing of Ricoh.

France/Europe, where users are more conscious about Price/Performance, Pentax has a much better presence. It would be much easier to start there indeed, and build from there.

But Asia? I am a little doubtful, unfortunately...

Best 50mm lens out there

I would like to thank the both of you for your replies !

Okay, so the price seems to be right. Doesn't make my choice any easier, but well...

The f1.2 gallery is full of great shots, and that made me lean towards the Porst...
The speed in itself makes it a great companion for the FA*.
However, I think the Porst is more inclined to give such soft focused image than the others (see the link for the lens in the database : the picture with the "kissers" is what I'm talking about).

So, if I understand correctly, when this lens is not used at portraiture distance, it will most likely produce milky images?

You might have nailed it...
Thing is, I would like to use the lens in low light, so the faster the better. However, I wish for a reasonable amount of sharpness and contrast. Maybe I should go for the Contax Zeiss...
However, the price, with the modified mount, is about the same (within a reasonable percentage) of what the porst would cost.
However, I didn't even think about changing lens while keeping the mount : it makes the upgrade a bit less painful! Thank you very much !
How much is the difference between f2 and f1.7? Half a stop? A third?

If you're a tinkerer, here's a zero budget solution for your Contax on PK.

Cheers, Georg

Thanks! The problem is I don't have the tools necessary (no drill). So only "soft" stuff for me ;)

The zeiss 1.7 might be the most sensible choice... And I can't exactly go wrong with it, right?

Best 50mm lens out there

Good evening,

I am currently looking for a 50mm lens too. First, to try the focal, secondly to complement my FA*24...

I am considering the different Pentaxes (mainly the A versions of the 1.4 and 1.7; or the F/FA version if the price is right -it's not there yet, but you never know...).

However, I "fell" on a Porst Color Reflex 55 1.2...
The price is a bit expensive for me, so I would like to know :
- What is it worth wide open?
- How much do you think it's worth?

The wide aperture makes it quite appealing. However, I found some samples where the lens produces "soft focus", with blurry images wide open; and that's not what I want.

I am also considering the conversion from Contax to Pentax of a Planar 50 1.7.
Is the premium over a Pentax A worth it? The Planar 1.4 is a bit too much for me at the moment...

Thanks for your input !

Poll: Pentax mirrorless camera in LX like design body

Yes, of course; I just meant that DA lenses won't suddenly stop working with an hypothetic Pentax FF body (which is what one could be lead to believe).

As stupid as my remark is (I'm quite conscious of it, don't worry), it is something worth saying : a FF body doesn't mean that suddenly, all DA lenses are worthless.
Sure, it's better to have FF lenses to go with a FF body.

Or could there be advantages using a DA (or assimilated) lens considering the iso behavior (as the pixel count would be lower), or the dynamic range?

Sorry for being slightly off-topic.

Or it could work if the sensor auto-crops to get an equivalent APS-C captor size.

@ JerryFu :
If I may :
There is no reason to believe there won't be a crop mode on a Pentax FF, making DA lenses perfectly usable.
And one can wonder if that wouldn't yield better results at higher iso.

Of course, if one goes FF, it's not to keep on using APS-C lenses. But well, that way, the transition from small format to FF would be less painful.

@ asdf :
A problem could be that, considering that lenses send information to the body, Pentax could very well block the use of the full size of the sensor if a DA lens is detected.

Just got my first prime, and it's a FA*24 f2 !
JPG straight from the camera, then ran through dxo.

Picture is f2, 1/10th, iso200. No sharpening.
A bit disappointed by the sharpness, but it might come from the camera : the same applies with my tamron 17-50. So, I won't bother, as far as images come
right when printed/viewed as a whole, and not pixel-peeped. :)

Still, the lens is really nice (even though I began playing with it 2 hours ago). Nice build, nice focus... Too bad, it's silver :p (but, well, I believe there are ways to cover that...)

Film and lenses in China

Instead of opening a new thread, i will ask here :

I will be going to China next month for some time.
I would like to look for lenses (mainly to upgrade from my f2,8 tamron zoom, to be able to shoot at a decent iso at night without a tripod), and I would like to know where I should look.

I will be in Suzhou, but I will see Shanghai and Beijing (and other places, but not soon).

Thanks in advance for your replies !

Pentax SDM vs Sigma HSM. Which is better?
Posted By viggen

What is better in this case?

I tried both hsm and sdm in a show last year, on my k10d, so i could be wrong.

HSM moves the focus ring faster. No arguing about that. However, to achieve the "perfect" focus, it moves 3 or 4 times. First time to "roughly" focus, then fine tuning.

SDM, however, does it in 2 or 3 times. Yes, it moves slower, but as it moves less times than HSM, the focusing time is about the same.

If better is "focuses faster", I would say there is no clear winner. Maybe HSM, if you're outside, with a bright sun (but i can't say for sure, as i tried both inside a big hall, so the sun was... well, quite well hidden).
If better is "right in focus", i don't know, i believe both systems can achieve that (even if sigma has some qc issues, if what the retailers i talked with are right).

Well, thank you for your answer.
It takes me a step closer to owning my very first Takumar ;)

I now have a little test to do to make sure I will be able to use this lens as I intend to...

The price, in fact, is about the same as other 28's Takumar I have seen on the net, when adding the shipping cost. As you said, with offers on the net, I can't tell for sure the shape of the lens...

I wish you a nice day !

Buying, or not buying?

Good morning,

A shop here has a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28 F3.5 to sell.
It is in perfect condition, absolutely no trace of use, it's almost like it has never been used.
There is the original hood, and the little case. Of course, front and rear caps are included.

My question is not about the quality of the lens (I just read the user review), but more about the price.
Is 100€ too much for it? Considering today's exchange rate, it's about 135$.
Comparing it to auctions on the net, the price seems fair, but well, you know, Buy it now auctions are... well...

Thanks for your advice !

Good evening everyone (i can't help it, it's evening here),

I finally registered, after spending some time reading the forum.

So, i'm a student, from France, and a pentaxian since february 08. I have a K10D, and i'm very satisfied with it. Last upgrade to the camera was the Tamron 17-50, which makes a really nice combo, for the use i have of my camera.

I hope it's enough as an introduction ^^
