That's what I ended up doing (the stopped down wide lens) and it worked out quite nicely. Thanks

Much appreciated. Glad to know I'm not simply a meathead. Well, at least not in this instance...

k5ii AF during video

Quick question (sorry if its a repeat, couldn't find it in the forums). I'm helping a buddy out with his Kickstarter project by doing the filming for him, which is the first time I've used my K5ii for video, and I noticed something frustrating - the AF is fine when I start the filming, but when I change camera placement (closer, farther, etc), there is no AF while filming. The focus point remains set through the length of the video. Am I missing something, or is this how filming w/ a DSLR is? Thanks

Taking apart an old lens - Fungus question

Well, the lens is reassembled, and there are no screws left over, so... success? I'm Ron Burgundy?

Now that I've passed this hurdle, I'm tempted to take the lens back apart, toss everything in bleach for a few days (that should kill everything, and tossing it in an autoclave just seems excessive) re-oil and reassemble. I'll be willing to put it on my camera at that point.

Taking apart an old lens - Fungus question

I'm taking apart a Rokunar 80-200 f4.5 which has some serious fungus on the lens. I'm doing it because I can :) My question is (and I just thought of this, now that the lens is completely disassembled on my dining room table) - how concerned should I be about the spores from this old lens getting into my lens I actually shoot with? The scientist in me realizes that there are fungal spores everywhere, but the poor grad student in me would like to avoid damaging expensive lenses with my idiocy. Thanks

p.s. If you can find an old lens for free, I recommend grabbing it and taking it apart. It's significantly more fun than I thought it'd be.

K-5ii Flash recommendations

I appreciate the suggestions, fellow Pentaxians. I went w/ the Yongnuo YN560III and am having a blast with it. Also went with the Toploader Pro 65, which is excellent. Timd, I had done your suggestion about 2 days before you posted it. Walked around the camera store for about an hour, playing with different bags (and no, I'm not one of those people who tries on in the store and then buys online. They burn in karmic hell).

Rather than make a new thread, I'll ask my non-sequitur here - recommendations for a holster style bag? I have a Lowepro Messenger bag, which is great for carrying everything, but I'd like a small holster bag for my K-5ii with grip attached and a short lens (at most my 18-135). Thanks

First, and this may be a painfully noobish question - I know there are some proprietary hot shoe mounts, but can I mount, say, a Metz 58 AF-1 for Nikon on my K-5ii? I ask because on Amazon, it is fully $120 more for a Metz Pentaz as it is for a Metz Nikon.

The more general question is - for my first flash, do you recommend going with a cheapo Yongnuo YN560II - type flash, or stepping up to a Metz / Pentax 540 / etc (or something in-between)?

As far as what I shoot, the short answer is anything and everything. I'm a second year medical student, so doing mostly photo therapy :), which is heavy on urban, especially subway shots. I also have a 14-day old daughter, and I may or may not be shooting an embarrassingly high amount of pictures of her and my wife.

Lenses currently using - DA 18-135 WR, SMC Pentax 50mm 1.4, Sears 135mm 2.8, Vivitar 28mm 2.8 RL.

Thanks for the help

K-30 or K-5 II or IIs

I just went through the same process. I went with the K-30, and after a couple weeks, I wasn't satisfied. Two main reasons: first, I do some race photography on the side, and after 900 shots in a few hours, I had almost gone through my third battery. I'm not suggesting that you'll be doing that much shooting, but if you've got grandkids or other things in your life that you want to shoot a lot, you'll notice the difference. Second, the lack of a battery grip. I don't shoot with a strap, and really noticed how small the K-30 grip was after swinging it around.

So I just upgraded to the K-5ii + grip (I went with the Pentax grip, rather than knock-off, and I'm already aware of where my money went. It'd be nice if they knock the price down a bit, but the grip is great, weather sealed, etc).

The biggest lesson for me is that I found that I had my heart set on the K-5ii, went with the K-30, and regretted it. If you know the body you want, just go get it. The K-30 is great, but its not a K-5ii (or D7100).

As far as the D7100 goes, it was quite simple for me. K-5ii + Pentax grip and Pentax WR lens = go wherever I want (and as a climber and former guide, that's a lot of places). There's no way I'm bringing a D7100 on an overnight trip where the weather might get a bit nasty.

Hope this helps
