Your vehicle: what do you have, why do you like it, and what do you not like?

Shame about the Sub Dealer. They’re such good cars.

I’ve helped* one daughter buy a KiA Soul and the other a Mazda 3 Hatchback. Both cars have been faultless and both girls love them.

* My daughters are competent, independent, successful women. By ‘helped’ I mean I explained the Art of War with Car Dealers and sat quietly while first Salesmen then Finance Managers did what I predicted they would do.

Action Autofocus - Just Not Getting It

That’s a fine idea, but I think you’d be better-served shooting at ISO 640 or 800 and closing your aperture two or three stops. You should get the same exosure value, likely won’t have any excess noise, but you’ll increase the Zone of Focus dramatically - perhaps by 2x or 3x - as noted above. Try this first before the 45 minutes it will take to focus-tune each lens.

Also, try to keep your shutter speed above 1/77 (1/FL) by bumping ISO rather than opening aperture, where possible. IIRC from before I sold my K-3, noise is not a big issue below 1600 in decent light and K-3ll is better at noise than K-3.

Correct. You didn’t or couldn’t answer with citations. I was asking you specifically, not the Forum.

Again: Ron, how many Reflex cameras and interchangeable lenses did RIcoh Imaging ship - yearly - from 2011 through today? Please cite your sources.

I always wonder what motivates people who join, make a few posts, then the hijack a thread and start to stir these things up. What do they get by diverting a discussion, telling us we’re mis-informed, benighted, wrong, chose the wrong tech and theirs is better?

OP, start a new thread at least.

Open websites like DPR where posters seem to relish the outrage and count their affirmations (Likes) are one thing. But what motivates someone to come into a ‘closed’ discussion community like this one - by closed I mean a single-Brand Forum - and openly question the members’ choices? What’s the point? What does the OP get out of it? Money? Points? Some sort of perverse dominance psychology? Bullies’ thrill? Who do they think is going to High Five them? - (Yeah, Baby! Slammed that Nerd! What a Loser!!) - Seriously? Yeah, that’s going to happen.

I just don’t get it.

Ratio on wedding: Couple vs Guests
Posted By monochrome

I think the size and event agenda dictate a lot of the ratio.

My daughter’s wedding at a private farm / weekend estate last summer had just under 100 guests - half from out of town - with two togs and no professional video. Her Proof CD had 3,200 captures from the out-of-town guests welcome reception at the hotel, Rehearsal Dinner at a Club, Dressing and (small) Wedding Party set shots, the Ceremony and the outdoor Reception, tented Dinner and (DJ) Dancing. The set shots captured all the traditional themes and combinations and were less than 10% of total. The guests were bused out to the farm from a meeting / parking location in the city and there were shots getting on and off the Coach. Her photographers did a great job getting all the guests in candids in small discussion groups during the cocktail reception and moving to the dinner tent. Her ‘event manager’ / good friend (great idea, BTW), who trailed the Second Shooter, used a checklist to ensure everyone was in at least one set of shots. The First Shooter concentrated more on capturing guests and Party, and Ceremony within the scenic landscape and residence. Half the candids had family or Wedding Party in them.

I think that worked because the event was small.

In contrast, we attended two weeks later a ‘New York Wedding’ at Oheka Castle on Long Island. Six still togs, 2 videographers, 2 drones, 20 tables of 12 plus the wedding party of 20 at a head table. During the 90 minute cocktail reception the togs actually asked our names and made a brief recording in the camera of the last names in each candid group. They did a ‘Pause and Pose’ with each person / couple as we left the receiving line. That was crazy efficient if the goal is get a shot of everyone, but the Receiving Line took nearly an hour. Two live bands (so no breaks), and they actually had a camera on a boom.

My best guess is 15,000 clicks at that event and <10% were formal set shots, but in my daughter’s the Couple was in a much higher percentage of the candids because the Bride and Groom can only be in one place at a time.

Digital Trends Comment on Hand Held Pixel Shift
Posted By monochrome
Replies: 13

Correct. The Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution System (HHPS) detects minute, natural hand motions to create four slightly different images, then uses the data stream captured by the IBIS system to align and stack the images. Where inherent motion of the subject would create artifacts I believe HHPS selects only one pixel capture of the four.

The issue is, i’m not certain the four separate HHPS image files can be post-processed outside the camera. I think you are limited to a super-resolution jpeg [edit - or TIFF when converted in-camera before exporting] file created by the camera. I think all the HHPS reviews fail to understand this. It’s kind of a RTFM problem.

* Note the ‘I think’ parts. I haven’t done the K-1 upgrade yet.

I think it’s great that we can buy all these tiers of Pentax 50mm lenses. Some day we’ll have something like that for the major fl’s and zooms.

AFA removing the baffle on the DA*60-250, depends how many thousands are in warehouse inventory. Do you expect them to unbox the existing stock, re-work them, rebox and relabel them and then sell them at the existing price? Do you expect them to firesale the existing stock to make a newer version available now? Or do you think maybe Pentax will deal with updating the 60-250 when the existing stock is sold, whenever that should happen to be?

At some point in the Development Story on the DFA*50/1.4 the product manager describes developing lenses today that are good enough to resolve future higher resolution sensors. It reads as if Pentax lens designers have a pretty good read on what is
Coming in sensor evolution. Perhaps the Development Team believes the DA*60-250, while a good enough FF lens today, won’t stand up well on future sensors.

Actually, an MILC production process is more complex to design and engineer than a traditionally person-assembled DSLR since the production process is more machine oriented. Engineering the clean sheet production process the first-time costs a lot of money. Building a new production facility and designing and acquiring the machines requires significant fresh capital. Capital investment must be allocated over a long lifetime, and while ultimately capital is less expensive than people, the initial capital investment in design and machines to replace people with with automation is probably prohibitive.

AFA a compelling product attracting its own capital, who is to say a RIcoh MILC would be a compelling product?; and who is to say it would be more compelling than all the other Ricoh Corp. projects on Ricoh’s capital allocation decision list? Capital isn’t abundant, it is scarce and product proposals compete for it. If there’s capital available for ten projects and a Ricoh MILC is the eleventh most compelling presented, it doesn’t get the green light.

A short zoom would be very nice to have, for sure. I would bet we’ll see a lot of primes - some combination of 20, 24, 28, 35, *85, and maybe 105 or 135, in a mix of of fast D FA* and smaller, slower D FA Limited standards; and a couple variable aperture or f/4 zooms of D FA28~105 or DA20~40 Limited quality before we see another FF * zoom or replacement for the Tamron-based lenses. I’d bet on new DA*16-50 and *50-135 to complement the *11-18 (and an entirely new platform for an APSc flagship body). I think they might just keep running SMC batches of The Three Princesses until people stop buying them. It costs no development money to do that.

Don’t forget Pentax has said they are designing lenses - especially ‘*’ lenses - for the future, to resolve the next generation of sensors and the ones following that. The production life of a good lens is a decade at least and they expect these new lens designs to be competitive for their entire lives.

That’s been my understanding as well. The unprecedented acceptance of the 645z (the pre-order was rumored twice the initial planned production for the entire run) set back the entire company’s product design and production schedule 12-15 months. K-1 was similar, though not so extreme.

I find it hard to believe they would sacrifice the APSc Unit volume by omitting a flagship body in favor of FF. My opinion is the effects of unexpected success are still being felt with APSc flagship delay, and recall what happened with D FA*50, which sold out the entire pre-order production run.

Pentax is conservative in production planning, and who can blame them after Q and K-01.

battery life for Pentax KP

Chimping eats batteries. I try not to. I use the OVF and forgot KP has a flash.

I have NEVER run down a D-LI90 in one day in any of the 4 cameras I’ve owned that use them; and I’ve NEVER had a full-day session with a KP where I didn’t need to change the D-LI109 battery. Thankfully I carry the extra battery that came with a semi-broken K-S1 I bought for $75.

That being said, changing KP batteries has not cost me any meaningful. photo opportunities.

When will Pentax catch up to the other big makers?

I’m not suggesting anything.

I’m saying that a first post from someone who snarking lists a set of purported Pentax faults that have been covered on this forum ad infinitum in the last decade is irritating. I’m saying Pentax does not ever claim to address the issues the OP is purportedly frustrated by, and Pentax is not the right brand for that. I’m saying Pentax is intentionally different from CaNiSony. I’m saying Pentax should not change to meet those needs - they’re already met by the other brands. I’m saying I intentionally chose and continue to choose Pentax specifically for the differences.

I’m saying life is too short to be frustrated by adult toys - just buy toys you like better if your toys aren’t satisfactory. I’m saying posts that legitimately read as if written only to irritate fellow members should be made on DPR, where the typical member will immediately hit the Like button.

At this time I shall respectfully withdraw from this conversation and Ignore the entire thread. Life is too short to be annoyed by inferences I did not make.

The polite answer is, Pentax has a different take on the combination of features and strengths to blend into their cameras from many other camera companies. We already have the other cameras - made by other companies. One must presume a person who wants the features the OP pointed out as lacking should consider changing brands rather than asking Pentax to change its approach to suit his needs.

The statement, “I love my Pentax, but . . . ”, followed by a list of faults and omissions tends to trigger fellow members.

AFA 645, how much better are the FA/DFA versions than the classic A 645 35/3.5 I recently acquired in a batch of 645 lenses?

Surprisingly, it doesn’t feel like a real disability, though technically it qualifies. I’ve just learned how to deal with it. It forces me to be more actively aware when driving. I choose to limit my driving to batched errands and necessary trips. I walk more now. My wife drives more often (which took some time to accept). My vision is like a Takumar 50mm lens on a K-1 - sharp in the center but soft on the edges. :D

If my family would cease leaving their shoes in the center of hallways the walking around part would be easier to live with. *

* I’ll not suggest I wish my family would just be easier to live with. :)
