ISO32000 on the K-5 can clean up pretty well.

Not too many cameras around that even reach that high on the ISO scale.

Pentax AF really need fixing

I tend to do that a lot as well and I'm wondering if it's adding to the problem. Sometimes I'll notice that the focus "corrects" slightly but maybe these are the images that are actually the problem ones?

Pentax AF really need fixing

It's on the the "to do" list :) My K-5 is one of the early models with stains and can be exchanged at any time. It's just that the stains haven't bothered me and it's not often that I shoot outside under conditions like above so was in no real hurry to have it replaced.

My first thought was that it was a camera/lens combo issue so I setup micro AF adjustments for this lens, (first time I've had to do it), but still something not quite right.
I haven't noticed issues with any other lenses but that could be because I'm typically shooting indoors or shooting scapes with an ultra-wide, or even macros with MF.

It's quite possible that it's an issue with this body though, (rather than all K-5's), as it also seemed to be immune to the lowlight focus issues under earlier firmwares that many others were experiencing. Maybe the two are tied together?

In any case, I might test a few other fast primes this weekend if the sun comes out and there's also a replacement body there when I get around to it.
Just thought I'd add my experience to this thread as it appears to be similar to the OP's. Even moreso that we're both from the same town and may have received stock from the same shipment.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I shot a few hundred images last weekend with the FA* 300mm f2.8 and I'd estimate about 30% were backfocused like this one.

Maybe half of those were a little better than this sample but the shooting conditions were as described by the OP. Full sunlight, shallow dof and more than 6 feet to subject. I never had this problem on the K-7, or the K20D or the K10D.

Hi Croc,

I posted on another forum that my FA* 300mm f2.8 seemed to be backfocusing on the K-5 and that I thought it was odd that I hadn't noticed it on any of my previous Pentax bodies. It's the only fast lens that I've really used in the conditions that you've described as most of my shooting is usually done much closer to the subject or in the studio.

Not saying I have the same issue but certainly worthy of more testing. We have rain forecast for the next few days so not sure when I'll get around to it.

Shot around 300 frames with it yesterday and I had to cull a noticeably much higher percentage of shots due to back focus.

Does anyone know if it's possible to downgrade Firmware from 1.03 to 1.01?

Personally this firmware upgrade did diddly-squat for me. Not everyone had FF issues.

And I'd also quite happily back it out if it caused new problems that weren't there in earlier firmwares.

Nice.

The D7K looks like it could be a great non-Pentax alternative but just like the K-5 it's plagued by complaints by new owners.

Sounds like you don't have the back-focus issue but may also be worth you checking yours for problems with inconsistent metering as well as the hot pixel problem, (which is reportedly fixed with the latest firmware).

Without checking exif I'd be guessing that the 3rd and 4th digits of the serial number would relate to the production week.

So serial numbers beginning with 3842xxxx would be Week 42.

This could all be wrong too :)

And after a quick look at the Serial database I can confirm it is all wrong., :)

Most important is not to blow the highlights and then recover the shadows in post.

Shooting RAW and adjusting fill light in your RAW converter is a good easy way to reveal shadow detail.

That's as far as I've gotten so far. :)

Actually this thread is the prefect place to discuss CRK's return policy for the K-5 and furthermore I think their return policy is a very good reason to buy local rather than grey.

One of my favorite photographers in the middle of this mediocre shot, (wearing the black cap), and also an ex-Pentax 645 shooter....free ice-cream to whoever can put a name to his image.

Are we (Pentaxians) more critical than Canikonians?

Yeah I think we are but we're also generally more tech aware than the average Canikon user.

If not, then we'd all be base our purchasing decisions on marketing guff and end up buying Canikon cause they're the most popular. :)

5d mkII shoots less than 4fps and has the same AF system as the original 5d.

It's not a sports camera.

To the OP, I have the K-5 and the FA* 300mm f2.8 but haven't yet tested them together. I was hoping for more AF points in the K-5 as well but am hoping that the new 5 point AF mode should help me some. The screw drive lenses that I've tried so far on the K-5 all seem slightly faster to lock it should be enough for me.

If I were to get serious about sports shooting then I think I'd do it properly and go the Nikon D3s.

I love my K-5 but it's not even close to the 645D.

Have a look at the cloth samples at base ISO using the imagingresources comparo tool. I forgot that all cloth has weave until seeing those.
