Please don't laugh

Well, I own a pretty cheap tripod that is as stable as it can get. In fact, it is identical to some way more expensive one...

sometimes (a lot of times) expensive 'brands' are just that. Some name stamped onto the same stuff as much cheaper one from 'amazon basic' or 'neewer' or whatever else cheapo non-brand. What is true for clothes and food is also true for 'photography' equipment. Nope, it is worse. A lot of photographers are so used to be ripped off they still think that it is ok to shell out 100$ for a simple piece of metal with a hole in it.

Who gets in-camera JPEGs they like, even if they PP RAW files at other times?

Raw+. Sometimes the jpegs are good enough, most of the time they are just quick previews... oh, and I hate jpeg. The file format. That lossy, blocky disease.

if the cameras would store PNG instead of jpeg...

Well, I went to a horse racing event today. Shot 200 pics with a cheapo Sigma 70-300 and I am surprised that so many pics came out ok.

Focusing isn't a problem. My inability is.

(in related note, attempted some macros a couple of days ago. Again AF was fine, not the camera's fault that I suck.)

it is not.

[MakerNotes] PreviewImageSize : 720x480

exiftool -b -PreviewImage -w preview0055.jpg IMGP0055.DNG

file IMGP0055preview0055.jpg
IMGP0055preview0055.jpg: JPEG image data, baseline, precision 8, 720x480, frames 3

compared with:

IMGP0055.JPG: JPEG image data, Exif standard: [TIFF image data, little-endian, direntries=14, manufacturer=RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. , model=PENTAX K-3 , orientation=upper-left, xresolution=234, yresolution=242, resolutionunit=2, software=PENTAX K-3 Ver. 1.11 , datetime=2014:12:18 17:27:30], baseline, precision 8, 6016x4000, frames 3

but then you still have to develop the raw, while with raw+jpeg the jpeg produced by the camera might be good enough. The extracted one on the other hand is pretty much useless except for the preview on the camera screen.

I would try the warranty route first. If they fix it under warranty. Great. If they don't, you can still destroy your camera drilling holes into it.

I have seen so many of this plastic 'locks' fail over the years... I am not really comfortable with something depending on them. So.. how is the long term experience with these?

Is there any manufacturer of nice leather&brass straps?

DA 50mm 1.8 lens drop. A field report.

Hello,

today I had my first lens drop event. I am notoriously clumsy so I am mostly surprised it took so long.

1m height.

On bare cobble stones

Front element first.

When I saw it there, standing on its front, my first reaction was 'oh sh*t'. Second was 'luckily not the 100mm macro'. I picked it up. Filter ring is broken, but glass looked ok.

Put it on camera, tried autofocus. Motor run like mad, no focusing.

Manual focus worked.

After manual focusing AF worked again. Yay!

Did some test shots - works like before.

Conclusion: it might be plastic, but it is sturdy. And the light weight might have been a factor in its survival.

compare a 8bit png with a 8bit 'high quality' jpeg.

Where do you think the difference in size comes from?

There is a lot of compression in jpegs. Lossy compression.

Annoying Liveview Behavior: Fixable? Bug?

actually with the 100mm I haven't seen the behaviour. If the effect is there with that lens it is really, really tiny. The DFA100 is just awesome.

ok, I reproduced it with my DA 50mm f1.8. It is a very minor dimming, easy to miss.

BUT: it also screws around with autofocus!

Started at f1.8 focused my computer monitor.
Scrolled up to f11 and observed the dimming effect.
Scrolled down to f1.8 and with the last step to f1.8 it defocused! The AF kicked in for a moment and everything was nice and blurry. What the hell?

Raw+. The jpeg is useful when I am at work and can't process the raw or need something to show around quickly (I am the 'we need someone to make a picture of our apprentice's cake, now!'-guy). But usually, the photos I like are better after some postprocessing in darktable.

I also saved some shots where I misjudged the lighting conditions or just screwed up.

both have a metal 'skeleton' with lots of plastic attached. The K50's plastic is bit differently molded. That is the only difference. It is basically the same camera, just with some little design differences.

I am a little bit angry with Ricoh trying to ripping off people with the K50.

and everytime you open that jpeg, edit it and save it, it is recompressed.

That is why I prefer png. Lossless compression ftw!

If people act like idiots, treat them like idiots.
(I was tempted use a different word, but I don't want to be crass).

It is the only way to stay sane.

If a group of these 'people' block everybody's else view of an important event, I will voice my dissatisfaction. Just like a tell unruly youth who are listening to pseudo-music on their crappy cell phones while riding a public transport to turn down the noise. Being big and bearded does have some benefits.

nope, it does not proof anything. The chip is just one element. There are many others influencing the capabilities. Like RAM, how that RAM is connected, which io pins connected to what, IO in general...

if you put a picture online you can't prevent it to end in places you don't want it to be. It is just a fact of life. There is no 'remove this image from all servers world wide and prevent re-uploading' button.
