Third party flash for K1?

I have the little Pentax AF201FG for my pop-up flash replacement and the Metz 64 AF1 for 'heavy lifting'. Oh, also have a YONGNUO YN560 IV for fill flash as needed. They all work perfectly on my K1 and K3 II

Edit: I also use the Yongnuo YN560-TX Wireless Flash Controller and Commander to adjust the YN560 remotely.

Now that the "dust has settled" a bit on the K-1 vs K-1 II debate I have decided to not upgrade my K-1. Like the OP I rarely shoot over ISO 100 so I don't see a big benefit for me. I'll struggle along with my K-1 for the time being. ;-)

Julien P. Has made an important point. Really can not compare images for 'resolution' if they were taken at different focal lengths let alone different glass. Just what are we comparing? Some basic flaws here in methodology.

Reminds me of our summer cottage by the lake when I was a kid SO many years ago. Just curious, but how close were you to the corner of the porch? ;-)

In practical terms I think you can set the focus ring at the infinity click stop then check the focus of some distant high contrast object with the live view screen with full magnification. Here are some numbers for the 15mm lens ...

Assuming a Circle of Confusion of 0.02mm

At F/2.4 the hyperfocal distance is 15.6 feet :: Objects from 7.79 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

At f/4.0 the hyperfocal distance is 9.2 feet :: Objects from 4.64 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

At f/5.6 the hyperfocal distance is 6.57 feet :: Objects from 3.29 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

At f/8.0 the hyperfocal distance is 4.66 feet :: Objects from 2.33 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

At f/11.0 the hyperfocal distance is 3.32 feet :: Objects from 1.66 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

At f/16.0 the hyperfocal distance is 2.36 feet :: Objects from 1.18 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus

If you assume a different circle of confusion you need to recalculate the numbers. You can do it here ...

DOFMaster

Cheers,
Rick

In the IRIX 15mm User Manual they say ...

To calibrate the focus ring:

1. Remove the calibration window cover by unscrewing the T6 Torx screw and sliding the cover outward.

2. Set the focusing ring at the infinity position and rotate the focus lock ring to the locked position. The internal calibration ring and flat head locking screw should be visible.

3. Using a flat head screwdriver, loosen the screw on the calibration ring. Be careful not to allow the screws to fall into the lens housing. A screwdriver with a magnetic tip is recommended.

4. Using your camera’s Live View and LCD zoom, rotate the calibration ring to focus carefully on a distant subject (farther away than 50m/164ft).

5. Lock the calibration ring by re-tightening the screw and replace the calibration window cover.

Good job with the Irix 15mm. Lovely images! So far I've only had one image where the sun was in the field with noticeable artifacts in the opposite corner. I can live with that. Small compromise given all the great attributes of this lens. ;-) I think I'm going to get the gelatin ND filters that insert in the back of the lens, they're only $11 at Amazon. ;-)

I haven't had a chance to check infinity against a star field. I also have not been able to locate a video of how the adjustment is made. Reading the instructions from Irix it appears there is a chance of losing the adjustment lock screw inside the lens so they recommend a magnetized screwdriver. I guess my approach would be to preset the focus to the infinity detent then with Live View on point the camera at the stars with the LCD display zoomed all the way in. Then loosen the infinity adjustment lock screw and adjust the lever for pin point star images in center of field. Then tighten the adjustment lock screw. In practicality I think you could set infinity on this lens to something 1000' away - maybe less. ;-)

Be sure you only turn the lock ring, the rings are close to each other. The lock ring does require a bit of effort to fully engage it.

When I set the focus lock I just hold the focus ring with my left hand and turn the focus lock with my right hand. Works for me.

Nice images!

I bought a pair of these last year and have to say they are working quite well. Much better than the Wasabi and as good or better than the Pentax.

Also bought 6 of the DSTE NP-F970 clones for my LED light panels. Work great!

I upgraded from a K3 II to the K1. I already had 3 full frame lenses at the time. I've added 7 more FF lenses since then, I've kept the K3 II, but to be honest, I haven't shot with it since getting the K1. I sold off a couple APS-C lenses with a K30 I still had. At this point the K3 II is a back up in case something happens to the K1, or I when I send in the K1 for the II upgrade. Who knows how long that will take. ;-)

I'll go on record as saying no to this speculation and say I think all the camera needs to do is add/subtract the appropriate pixel offsets to the shake reduction solution ... at least that's the way I would attempt it. ;-) This presumes that the shake reduction can deliver a pixel accurate solution, 70% of the time.

When deciding to use 3rd party batteries you should take into consideration the relative cost. For example, I just checked on Amazon for pricing of Pentax OEM and Wasabi D-Li90 batteries. Pentax = $60 Wasabi = $15 So I can buy 4 Wasabi's for the price of one Pentax. In my usage the Wasabi's give me about 80% of the performance of the OEM Pentax battery (your mileage may vary) That makes the Wasabi battery cost about $20 relative to the OEM Pentax. No brainer here, I would rather have 3 Wasabi vs 1 OEM for my $60

Regarding 3rd party claims on power capacity: Many 3rd party battery manufacturers will rate their batteries using an unreasonably low terminal voltage (the lowest battery voltage before there is no more current measured) with a very low current draw. Their numbers may be technically correct but be very overstated for the intended use in our camera.

Really like the IRIX 15mm. On a sunny day I can just dial up the hyperfocal for F8.0 and forget about focus!

Modelling was one of my hobbies years ago. ;-) Great images.
